How sad today losing David Bowie. He was a musical hero and inspiration to myself and many others. Off to join John Lennon and many others in the great band in the sky. R.I.P. His music lives on. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.

Oh geez, sorry to hear that, he basically started his own musical genre simply called "Bowie", I'll agree with you, he certainly was an innovator, he'll be sorely missed.

He starred in a movie directed by Jim Henson, called Labyrinth, I've got it on DVD, in the movie David Bowie played the Goblin King Jareth, the movie soundtrack featured songs written by David Bowie.

Have to admit, I quite liked his music.

He was also in The Man Who Fell To Earth, the book was far better than the movie.

RIP starman

Gutted. A true visionary. He defined what was cool for much of his career.

Wasn't he also part of the Glam Rock scene for a part of his career?, or am I mistaken?

It's hard to categorise Bowie really each album/cd was something new or different. In Uncut magazine he had 7 CDs in top 200. Some of which I loved others not so much, but always so varied.
185 The Man Who Sold The World
114 “Heroes”
105 Diamond Dogs
30 Station To Station
19 Low
12 Ziggy Stardust
11 Hunky Dory

His most successful chart wise was Lets Dance with guitar work by Stevie Ray Vaughan

Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick, Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Mick Ronson etc. Bowie knew how to pick guitarists.

If you get the chance there's a doco out there called "Five Years: the making of an icon". I'm sure it'll be on tv somewhere in the next week or so. Watch it.

Might see if I can watch it as we get ABC HD on Digital TV over here in Darwin, got my big 42 inch LG Plasma Screen TV set up at the foot of my bed and it's Digital TV ready, no Set-Top Box needed, cheers for that Wokka and Pablo.

Awwwwww....just checked the TV guide in today's NT Newspaper, looks like we aren't getting that David Bowie program in Darwin after all.

Nice work Wokka. It is well worth the viewing. I'll be watching tonight it for the 4th or 5th time then.

Doc, you'll probably be able to watch it on Iview from tomorrow.

I've been trying to find a better version of this picture with Bowie playing his one string Flying V. His quote at the time was that he couldn't really play guitar, so anything more than one string was too difficult. He was clearly underestimating himself as there seems to be lots of pictures of him playing guitar on stage.

"Five Years: the making of an icon"

Here on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZCxkM4tatM

It doesn't play on my Win 10 machine and there are mixed comments, those who can play it say it's brilliant and the other 50% are getting rubbish like me

Dave, it used to be on YouTube but I think it got pulled for copyright infringement. The only reason that one is still there is it is garbled. And I think it's stuffed for everyone, didn't work on Win7, WinXP or the android Youtube app for me.

I also tried the link DK posted and it's garbled.
Tune in 9:15pm ABC2 tonight instead !

Could be right but the comments for and against are anything between a few hours and a year so it might be regional as well

Just tried watching it on youtube and it's all garbled and pixellated for me too, running Windows 10 Home 64Bit on both my laptop and desktop computers so I don't think it's just your machine, I think it's deliberate to get around copyright issues.

Apologies forumites. The online TV guide was wrong. I saw it advertised on ABC2 airing 9pm Thursday in Perth so check your local guides.
Otherwise it should be on iview Thursday or Friday

It was on ABC2 @ 9:30 last night, I watched about half an hour of it got bored and went back to the big bash.

I was hoping for more depth but the bit that I watched seemed like a really watered down version of one of the "Classic Albums" programs that run from time to time.
