In this thread I will share step by step the process of my latest comission, a replica '59Burst LP.

This won't be an exact copy, there are a quite a few modifications and also the construction method will be different to the standard way of building a LP.

Here is a taster pic of the Quilted Maple top on Honduran Mahogany...

Hells yeah. This is gonna be fun to watch!

EDIT: Gotta agree with Woks, a vid or two of this build would be most appreciated. Especially the top carve process please.

Nice looking bit of Mahogany there DB, definitely going to follow this build diary and would love to watch a series of videos documenting the build process from start to finish as well, I've found myself getting really fascinated about the whole process of building a guitar from scratch after watching a ten-part series on youtube documenting a Stratocaster build from scratch.

Wood is such a great material to work with, don't you agree?

Hey Doc, the photo in the first post is the quilted maple for the drop top but mahogany will be used for the guts of the body - which is not visible in the photo must be underneath the QM

DB will definitely agree with you that wood (timber in his case) is a great material to work with !

Cheers Doc for the links I'll watch some time

Doh.....my bad.....the quilted maple looks nice too, I haven't seen an LP with a quilted maple cap before so it should look great, all the Gibson LPs I've seen had either Flamed-Maple tops or the maple was more plain looking, my LP Studio has a Maple Top that has a bit of figuring on it.

well here's a taste of what a LP with quilted maple can look like Doc, although DB's will be a burst but you get the idea.
I'd love to do one dark blue and green burst and would look like a nice clean swimming pool

Videos shall be done :)

Should have done one of the prep and glueing of the top to body, but there was lots of swearing involved due to a twist in one half of the top...
The sound track would have been one continuos beep!

haha that doesn't sound like your man cave DB. Can you get a tiny gopro head mount for Clarry can record the video ?

dingobass

Gopro mount for Clarry.... Now that would make for a very interesting video :p

Just incase you didn't get the full impact of the quilted goodness......

That top does look spectacular, I might see if I can post some pics of my LP Studio guitar in the non PBG section, the quality of the pics might not be great as my Cannon A480 Digital Camera doesn't seem to want to work too well (it chews through batteries like they're going out of fashion, so I'll have to use the camera in my Samsung Galaxy Y phone and the pic quality of it isn't the greatest.

Hey Bruce I'd say we have to wait for the colours of the burst. Along way to go before staining starts

Perhaps you could make silent movies then do a commentary over the top...

nice neck blank DB, is the flame maple and walnut from our mate Derek ?
I see the neck blank is nice and deep for the deep heel and plenty of room for fall on the headstock, or will you glue the headstock on an angle ?

dingobass
18-11-2015, 06:59 PM
Maple from our mate Derek, Walnut from my personal supa secret stash :p

The neck/ headstock will be one piece except for "ears" glued on to give the headstock the width needed.

nice one DB, can't beat the one piece neck/headstock join. Sounds like a cunning plan. You got that gopro mounted on Clarry's scone yet ?

Not yet, but was thinking of mounting it on the Dingoes walking harness....
that would make for a funny vid when he goes mental playing chase with the Staffy and Zeddybitz.....

Clarry seems like he's a bit of a character, how did you acquire him?, how old is he now?

I might actually get a Mobius ActionCam (basically a smaller profile action camera than the GoPro) and I want to throw it on the dog when nobody is home and see what she gets up to....

I got Clarry from Robin the crazy bird lady that used to live down the road.
Used to buy birds from her and everytime we visited Clarry would go mental until I got him out of his cage...
In the end Robin said I should have him as he would sulk for days and attack everyone on sight after we visited, funny how animals choose who they want to be with....

Clarry is one and a half now... Scary thing is he could be around for the next 40-50 years.........

My dad acquired a sulphur-crested cockatoo from some mates of his, he named the bird Charley, anyway, one day my dad bought the bird a nice little mirror with a little bell on it for his cage, the bird proceeded to destroy the little mirror, my dad also acquired a Bush Turkey from another mate of his, the Bush Turkey was named Greggan, he would "go to the toilet" all over the place and boy did it stink, my dad also bought some chooks, one was a white coloured Rooster, my dad liked to sit down at the back of the workshop and have a bit of a drink and he actually got the Rooster drunk at one stage, so he reckons, we also used to get a few Tata Lizards too and they would go for swims in the chooks water trough and then sun themselves on some concrete slabs leaning against a Boab tree, we also use to get a few finches and my dad would put some birdseed out for them, this was before I moved up to Darwin from Kununurra in 2000 after my dad retired from work due to nerve trouble in his left arm, I had been working in his workshop as an apprentice Fitter and Machinist up until then.

Yeah, when we got our dog, mum put her hand in the box where 4 little puppies were, all of them backed off but the one we got slowly walked up and sniffed her hand... 6 years later she is still around us!

Update time!

Today's fun is making an angled plenum for the router....
The reason for this is the pup cavities and neck pocket are offset on a 4.5 degree angle to match the break angle of the neck.
first pic is a full scale cross section of the body showing the pup cavities as well as the top carve.

So, how do we make the plenum?
First up, grab a chunk of tree that is quarter sawn.
This timber is machined down to 27mm. This matches the height of the break angle where it meets the bottom edge of the Guitar. ( you can see this on the plan as the area drawn in red)
Then we mark the 4.5 degree angle and it's off to the Bandosaurus.
Set the table to suit and cut.

now we have two chunks of timber one of which is the start of our plenum.
Next we have to machine the sawn face so it is flat and down to size.

EDIT: For some reason it has uploaded the pics out of order, but I am sure you can work it out :)

dingobass
24-11-2015, 08:42 PM
A simple jig is required to hold the rough cut plenum for machining..

dingobass
24-11-2015, 08:45 PM
Next job is to mark out the plenum base and cut and drill the required holes...

And Bazinga! One completed plenum ready for use :)

pablopepper

Clever. Much easier than setting up an angled support to rout off.

wokkaboy
25-11-2015, 06:13 AM
Nice work around DB. You can reuse the plenum for any other neck pockets with a break angle

looks excellent DB, what you routing on the router table now ? Body looks almost 50mm thick but no doubt that will come down when you shape the arch top

Very nice. For a second I thought there was a horizontal split in the cap. Nope, trick of the light. Don't let that router smell your fear... You are the toolmaster, it is merely the tool. :P

Nah he never got it, I did it all myself, found there was an ethernet line running up the stairs so I just tapped into it

EDIT Hey can we have the strikethrough BBcode enabled here? I can't make the post as how I wanted it to look...

Just the profile, Woks.
Got a big ass pattern router bit that is 65mm long. Big enough to do the profile in one pass, saves a lot of messing around on the bobbin sander....

With a 65mm bit spinning at 50 million RPM it is wise to be scared of the tool... :)

Been a while, but with building jigs, Christmas etc etc this build has been a bit slow.

Now waiting for a few specialist toys to arrive so I can do me some funky carving on the Quilted Maple top.
When I get this done, I can get onto finessing the neck join and generally going mental on the build. :)

Meanwhile, I have been testing the jigs I built on the Bass that I may or may not be building...........
