Pretty sure its a lap steel, possibly circa 1930's?
Any clues as to maker?

If I get my hands on it, BP ;)

I just love anything Art Deco, and this just screams Art Deco!
My guess is the body is made from Mother of Toilet Seat, which in the 20's and 30's was über moderne...

I couldn't find that particular one, but it's a similar style to the National New Yorker. I imagine there were all sorts of knock-offs around at the time, as popular as the steel guitar was!

IMO it actually looks pretty snazzy to me, would be an interesting convo starter on my wall...

Have been trolling the interweb - can't see anything like it. Looks vaguely Epiphone electar - especially around the bridge, but that's as far as I've been able to get...

It's el-cool what ever it is. Do you think that contraption on the headstock is functional or aesthetic?

cool looking lap steel DB. I've got an old lap steel a mate gave me I may restore. It looks at least 40-50 years old. I'll bring it up next visit DB.
The body on that one definitely looks like an old Kelvinator fridge
