A taster of the next experiment from DB's Cave...
Fret board for a BassVI inspired build but with a few mods.

This will be a long time in construction as I have to fit it in around the 50 billion other jobs on ATM..

looks good DB so this is the 2 piece fingerboard. Will the body be a new scratch body or going onto an existing body ?
what's the scale length is it similar to the baritone ?

The body is the DCL B1/ G1 shape with a few tweaks.
This one won't be my usual neck through construction but a set neck type.

Wait 'til you cop an eyefull of the cap I scored for this build... Trouser fail guaranteed :)

Now, has anyone noticed anything different with the fretboard?

Its fretless but tbh im sure thats due to how new it is :P

also how easy is it to build a neck im doing a scratch build after this kit and want to know what im getting into. Also thinking of trying binding for the first time with it any advice on how to start a scratch build would be amazing

Gav - you're slipping - looks like a multiscale...

Yeah the first few frets look to be angled... I'm with Bman on the multiscale...

...or that could simple be a Pale-Ale-Scale?

True - could also be paralax, but I think DB's getting artsy.

Necks can be tricky first time round, but if you have the right tools and templates it's not rocket science..

What you will need list.
Templates for body, neck and fretboard. Pablopepper is the go to guy for templates.
Router and appropriate bits for truss rod groove and flush trimming.
Jigsaw.
Rasps.
Spokeshave.(optional)
FBH for those times things need some persuading :p (thats a joke, Joyce)
First time round I would reccomend using a pre slotted fret board.

Then there are tools like radius sanding block, fretting hammer, fret nippers, crowning files, notched straight edge to name a few.

From memory, I did a how to thread on neck building.... Will try and find it and post a link

Bazinga - does that give me enough time out of the naughty corner to say Bunnings, Tru-Oil, poly and nitro in one sentence? Or would be adding Iceman be too much? ;).

That would earn you the dubious honour of sharing the cupboard under the stairs with the Pest....
You really don't want to share with a smelly teenager, do you? :p

Update time..

In between glue drying, finishes curing and a bad case of the CBF's due to the lurgy I did a bit more work on the neck.

A little bit of body/ neck profiling..

Wood porn shot of the fretboard....

Smelly only comes into play when I play guitar or bass... Which both I tend to play for a long time in one go...

Alrighty then.

Executive decision, its now a Bass V.....

Dopey here ordered the wrong single bridges... Bass instead of Guitar so the upshot is six of these blighters wont fit....
Yes, there was much swearing and chucking of toys out of the cot....

So, as ever there is a workaround so five strings it be.

Anyhoo, I slapped a flamed top on and binding.

Looks fully sik there DB, should be cool anyway, even with only 5 strings...

DB there is always a workaround and this will be a cool project. Nice flame maple cap there !

Moving right along, here she is ready for final touches.
Drill tuner and control holes, make cavity cover then final sanding before staining and finish.

Oh, I guess I had better put my logo on the headstock as well...

Noice DB! Looks the biz! Might have to send the boys over to take that...

wokkaboy

Looks very nice DB. This must be first fretted bass you have built for a while. What's the scale length of a VI and you might have to call it a V now

dingobass
20-10-2015, 08:21 PM
Sure is Woks.. I very nearly ripped the speed humps out today to make it a proper Bass but I resisted the urge :)
Next prototype build will be a neck through semi acoustic Bass, multiscale and fretless just to mess with peoples heads :p

30" scale is the normal BVI
This one is 30/29.5" with a 10mm offset.
