G'day Forum,
before we ask for changes on the size and shape of TL kit neck pup cavity sizes best we have a vote first on the forum.
Currently the neck pickup route is too large to fit a standard humbucker ring to cover the hole so you have 2 options - use the pickguard or fill the hole and re-route to a humbucker or single coil shape cavity.
Forumites can you please vote what you would prefer the neck pup cavity on all TL kits, 1, 2 or 3 please
1. Leave it as it is
2. Humbucker size route so a standard pup ring covers the hole and screw holes are in the timber area
3. Single coil route so single coil pup rings fit
I've put some example pics below of options 2 & 3
As Andrew O has pointed out if we went for option 3 the single coil route you can always route that out to a humbucker size but obviously not the other way around.
Of course if option 3 was the go then would have to make sure the single coil route lines up with the pickguard hole !

3. Single coil route so single coil pup rings fit

yeah I have to agree on vote 3 as well Ponch. Gives you all 3 options of pickguard with single pup, humbucker with ring and single coil with ring.
PS how good does that metallic blue with gloss look !

what you saying Pabs, no pickguard period ?

A single pickup rout only gives 2 of those options. Being a smartass. :P

ah ok all good Pabs, well the builder can either route it to a humbucker size or get DB to do it !

Bahahaha! Nicely spotted Pabs :)
Keep it simple, stay with the single pup rout.

What does option 1 look like?
It's been a crappy day here and I just can't understand what you are asking....

Hey Rabbitz,
this is Andrew's TL-1 pic he recently posted. The neck pup route as they come out of the factory are too big to fit a humbucker pickup ring

I'd say just the single pup rout. It's a lot easier to remove wood than it is to fill it back in.

Rabbitz here's an example on a mock build of a TLA-1 I built, see the chrome ring doesn't cover the cavity. I think only 2 or 3 of the 4 screws for the ring bit into timber
is it a bad design or build defect? if that is the case these really should go back...

might have to do some more building so i have something to write about...

every TL kit I've seen Stan have had the same oversized neck pup cavity so I'd say it's a bad design.
I even noticed on my 4D mate Wayne is building a SG-2. Its a bolt on neck and a larger pickguard than a SG-1 or SG-1F.
That has the same oversized neck pup cavity so you have to use the pickguard

Will reducing the size of the routed out area make it more difficult for "less tooled up" purchasers to complete a standard build?

If you are using a single coil in the neck it will make no difference.

Hey Rabbitz, if the factory changed to a single pup route then it would have to be large enough to give the single pup on a pickguard a bit of movement but small enough for a single pup ring to cover the hole.
Of course it would have to work for both options without any mods to the cavity required

Why would anyone desecrate a Tele with a humbucker.....

nice one Gav, I know you built 2 white tele's, is this yours or the one you gave to Ads for PBG's 2nd birthday ?

Yeah! Cut the Pickguard shape myself. TV Jones Pups and....Oops! Sorry about the thread jack! :)
Single coil route (option 3 ) makes most sense. After all we are supposed to be builders and whats a little routing, bloody fingers, and routing bits landing on neighbors rooftops to worry about!
that is a sweet Tele, Gav. Those filtertrons look awesome on it

Well if it doesn't affect noobs (like me) then I guess Option 3 is OK.

cheers Dave, looks very unanimous that forumites want a single coil route neck pup cavity for all TL models

I can understand having the route like that, they assume you want the pickguard so it leaves lots of wriggle room and means they (and we) don't need to be as precise. But if you are going to have some nice figured wood why not just have the single coil route. They can obviously do it if the Pitbull picture for the TLA-1 only has the single coil route.
