Anyone tried to macguyver any less conventional house hold-ish materials as inlay? I found a whole stash of nail polish and was wondering if itd be possible to use it as an inlay material. Dremel a cavity, fill with nail polish and sand flush. That way I could have all these crazy colours and metallic and sparkly and whatnot. Any thoughts or past experience would be great. Thanks!!

You could always experiment on some scrap wood and see how it works.

Ill do that if no one can tell me that its a bad idea before I give it a shot and end up swearing with sandpaper gunked up with nail polish.

Don't see why it wouldn't work, especially if you 'seal' it with Epoxy. (which DB won't like me saying) - but it's how I was taught by the boys at ALS to seal my inlays and its never failed me yet. And if your artwork doesn't look got simply grab some Acetone (nail polish remover) to the ladies from the big green store and remove.

You could also fill the hole to just below the surface and then top it up with a medium viscosity CA glue.
Then sand and polish as usual.
