View Full Version : Dingobursts- any dramas?

Hi all, long time no post.

I'm keen to try a sunburst using Dingotone, but would like to know if there's any pitfalls to be wary of. Also, any ideas for good colour combinations would be most welcome.

Nice to be back- I've been in self-imposed Stick exile.

El

I don't remember any DT bursts El, you could always try it out an scrap wood!

Nice to see ya back mate!

wokkaboy
06-05-2015, 11:16 AM
wow Bassguy, its been yonks since you have been on the forum, surprised your account still works !
don't think anyone has tried a DT burst but sure it should be like wudtone.
What kit will the burst be going on, what type of timber ?

dingobass
06-05-2015, 12:48 PM
Yep, DT bursts work really well.
Unlike the former finish we used to sell, you dont get any "tide" marks when blending..

Adam has a Strat in his collection that I did a burst on, I will ask him to post a pic for your enjoyment...

keloooe
06-05-2015, 12:52 PM
DB, maybe you can film how you do your bursts with DT?

wokkaboy
06-05-2015, 01:12 PM
thats right I saw that Strat you built with the burst DB, that looked great. Ads had to make sure I didn't leave with it haha

Welcome back Bass Guy! BTW - how is the stick going?

Great to see you back BG! What will you be working on? Another low-end masterpiece in the works?

cheers,

cheers,
Gav.

Yes, I have a Ash Body Jazz bass to work on- piccie attached.

I have decided on a blue/green burst for this one- green in the centre with deep blue on the outer. What colours are recommended in Dingotone for this?

...and yes, I will be popping the grain first...

keloooe
07-05-2015, 08:32 AM
Interesting finish choice El! Should be a ripper!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 08:35 AM
Hey Bassguy, you could do tarkine green and ask for a darker version of bondi blue on the outer.
These ash JB's are a great looking kit. I've also got one in the pile to build so will be watching this build with interest

Bass Guy
07-05-2015, 08:42 AM
Stick is going great! I have two of them now, but the pickup in the second one is being attended to by The Man Himself at present. I have vowed to gig on the Stick as much as possible, so next gig Claymore will be in action!

keloooe
07-05-2015, 08:43 AM
In my opinion the Stick is really damn weird but also really cool!

Bass Guy
07-05-2015, 09:05 AM
This is the sort of thing I had in mind, finish-wise.

keloooe
07-05-2015, 09:09 AM
Holy damn! That is mega cool! Now you should finish a stick like that!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 09:11 AM
mega cool looking bass there BG. The colours aren't too far off tarkine green and bondi blue

dingobass
07-05-2015, 09:29 AM
Yhep. Bondi and a tweaked version of Tarkine will nail it! :)

so DB, me pushing Dingotone on the forum must get me a reduced Naughty Warehouse sentence to 2.5 life ?

keloooe

so DB, me pushing Dingotone on the forum must get me a reduced Naughty Warehouse sentence to 2.5 life ?

If only it did, then we would all be doing the same thing AND I'd be freed from the Naughty Warehouse!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 09:50 AM
yeah Pest, we are stuck in the Naughty Warehouse for life bro.
Might as well put some green and blue stripes on the building
Sorry BG for hijacking your thread hahha

Might as well start the stripes! The inside should be full of Roos / Freo stickers and posters haha!

wokkaboy

sounds fine to me Pest. If we had Magpies stickers inside the warehouse everyone would be vomitting everywhere haha

keloooe

Haha yeah bro, don't want the warehouse to be full of spew!

dingobass
07-05-2015, 10:40 AM
Sooooooooooooo....
New colourscheme for the NW is black and white.

Also, there will be endless loop videos of the mighty Pies thrashing every other team on 1000 cm screens on every wall.

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 10:42 AM
so DB you will need to employ about 10 staff to clean up all the spew on the ground if you subject us to that rubbish haha
Also who pays the power bills for 4 x 10m big screens ?

keloooe
07-05-2015, 10:42 AM
Nah DB, once you see MY concept drawing you will want to go with MY plans!

Trying to fight someone who went to art school... I might regret this choice....

keloooe
07-05-2015, 10:45 AM

Electricity will be supplied by a big mouse wheel powered by Pest.

Better get into training, Pesty ;)

keloooe
07-05-2015, 12:45 PM
*Jedi wave* This is not the Pest that you are looking for!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 12:47 PM
haha might need more than one mouse wheel to power 4 x 10m screens
We'll have to put the power tools and kegerator on rationed power - we can't have that DB !

dingobass
07-05-2015, 01:04 PM
Dont worry, essential services such as beer fridge and Pizza ovens will be connected to the grid..

However, machinery etc will have to be Pest powered...

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 01:06 PM
wow DB the bandsaw, drum sander, router and other high wattage tools will still have to be rationed.
The pizza oven is wood fired.
Might have to pull the cord on the big screens till we get a decent match on with the Dockers haha

keloooe
07-05-2015, 01:07 PM
Wokka said that he is willing to spend his life sentences in the wheel!

andrewdosborne
07-05-2015, 01:07 PM

How about (mighty) Swannies stickers?

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 01:08 PM
sorry Pest I can't serve beer and run on the mouse wheel at the same time so I'm excused.
You might have to handball that duty cuz to someone else

keloooe
07-05-2015, 01:10 PM
What about (mighty) Swannies stickers?

Ok for that Andrew you can be on the wheel!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 01:11 PM
yeah Andrew, there's no room in the NW for Swans fans, sorry mate

andrewdosborne
07-05-2015, 01:15 PM
Uh oh.. I'll have to set up a NW branch here in NSW!

keloooe
07-05-2015, 01:17 PM
It's okay Andrew we are all willing to chip in, as long as you provide the power! By the way, Gav has setup the NSW branch of the NW, so we can just chuck you there, we even have transportation to and from the central NW!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 01:22 PM
only problem Andrew a regional Naughty Warehouse will have to have cameras everywhere so DB can watch and talk over the 10,000 watt speakers and play big brother hahah

andrewdosborne
07-05-2015, 01:23 PM
Tell you what, I'll build a pipe from here to WA to supply the home brew!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 01:26 PM
sounds great Andrew. Have you costed such a pipeline ? You might be able to tap into the Little Creatures line that comes from Geelong to Perth.
Better make the pipe from NSW to Geelong minimum 500mm ID, we are pretty thirsty here in the west !

andrewdosborne
07-05-2015, 01:38 PM
I'm sure I can get some cheap piping from the Green Shed of Doom!

Best we overdesign it big time the rate the NW numbers are increasing

andrewdosborne
07-05-2015, 02:20 PM
Lets just build a micro brewery in the NW!

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 02:27 PM
Lets just build a micro brewery in the NW!

Thats the best idea I've heard in months Andrew !

DB and myself have recently purchased a home brew kit and a larger scale micro brewery we can eleminate bottles and pour straight from the keg !

andrewdosborne
07-05-2015, 02:55 PM
Perfect! Freshly brewed beer straight from the keg

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 03:05 PM
I think we have an idea Andrew that DB will give the thumbs up !!

This is a rare occurence in the NW !

Bass Guy
07-05-2015, 03:55 PM
Right, getting this thread back on track... ;-)

I will place an order this evening for a tougher Tarkine Green and a bold Bondi Blue. The neck can wait for the moment.

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 04:17 PM
haha sounds like a plan BG,
we love to go off topic and thread jack, you just happened to be the thread jack-ee hahah
Sure DB can mix up something that looks similar to the pic you attached.
Usually ash grain gives a darker appearance when staining than say basswood or alder

dingobass
07-05-2015, 04:27 PM
Bad news, guys... Well for those under 45 years of age anyways...
All junior members of the NW will have to operate the mouse wheel. The roster will be up soon.
Only exception is Woks, we need his expertise to operate the bar :)

The tele screens will be hardwired and behind bullet proof glass.

wokkaboy
07-05-2015, 04:37 PM
haha nice one DB, glad I actually got an exclusion from the mouse wheel.

that's extreme bullet proof glass for the TV screens but then again there aren't many Pies fans around !

dingobass
07-05-2015, 05:00 PM
Ok... That was an epic thread hijack......

No worries with concocting a suitable burst combo for you BG...
I reckon that the neck would look good done in the DT Bloodwood. It is a nice dark Amber...

Bass Guy

Wow! A veritable cornucopia of stain here! Many thanks, DB!

For those curious among you, we have the neck products (wax, stain coat and final coat), the darker Tarkine Green stain set (which I will insist on calling Darkine from now on), the Bondi Blue stain set, and finally the overall final coat.

DB has also very kindly sent me some blue and gold highlights to experiment with. These should up the Bling Factor considerably!

I am VERY excited to get cracking on this stage, but I will be reading up first before going full tilt at it. And given the curing duration, I anticipate this will be a lengthy process. Bear with me, folks!

Nickosaurus
12-06-2015, 12:08 PM

keloooe
12-06-2015, 01:11 PM
That is a lot of bottles..... The highlights will be interesting to see in action, will bling it up quite nicely if it works!

Bass Guy
12-06-2015, 01:59 PM
I was wrong! 😂😂

I'm back with the block and some 400grit to get the right level of tooth on the body.

wokkaboy
12-06-2015, 02:10 PM
don't go any further than 400 grit BG or the surface grain will be so polished the pores won't take as much stain.
Have to call you the sanding man fan! hahah

Bass Guy
12-06-2015, 02:44 PM
The Darkine has taken very well, the Bondi Blue is not how I'd expected- but let's see how it cures.

One thing I notice using DT for the first time, woods like ash positively DRINK it! I was quite surprised as I remember Wudtone being more viscous. But that could be my ailing memory, as it's been a while...

Looking forward to seeing how it cures over the next 5 days. 😃😃

wokkaboy
12-06-2015, 03:10 PM
looking good BG, I haven't tried bondi blue on ash but tarkine went well with a bit of yellow in the natural ash grain.
How good is the smell ! smells very natural.
It's likely the stains will darken a little as they cure.
More coats and the colour will further deepen

Bass Guy
12-06-2015, 03:26 PM
Can't judge the smell, my nose is blocked!

I am very intrigued how it goes and certainly won't be rushing.

dingobass
12-06-2015, 04:59 PM
The Bondi will need a few coats to get the intensity.
I cant spike it any further as there is a limit to how much pigment can be added to the mix.
Just remember to shake the crapola out of the bottle each time you take some out as the pigment will settle out rather quickly.....

Bass Guy
14-06-2015, 07:48 PM
It's getting more intense, I am convinced of it!

I'm very impressed how these colours bloom after time spent curing. So now we wait for a week (giving me time to get the neck prepped) and then the metallic highlights go on. Then the intensifying coats. Exciting!

This is the second application of the Darkine IC, over the first application of the Bondi Blue IC. It sort of speaks for itself.

Overall I am finding DingoTone a lot easier to work with than Wudtone, and even at this early stage I am becoming convinced the results will be at least match if not exceed the predecessor.

wokkaboy
06-07-2015, 08:35 AM

Bass Guy
