Here's the current herd..

Back left to right: Maton acoustic, PBG ES-1G, Esquire Partscaster (F* neck, Alder Realparts body), PBG ST-1
Bottom left to right: PBG JR-1M, Gibbo SG.

Most playable is a tie between the PBG ES-1G & Gibbo SG. Most interesting (sound-wise) is the Esquire Partscaster. Most fun by a mile is the PBG JR-1M (have not completed set up or finished decal yet).

PBG SG-1F & LP-1M have new homes.

Sorry, I realised this image was a bit blurry after the herd was stowed away back into the barn.

Alright, I'll see if I can take a quick pic of the guitars I have at home, I have one other guitar at uni and another one in a wardrobe in my bedroom but it's currently waiting for a new neck, anyway:

From the left, my 2013 Gibson USA Les Paul Studio (Vintage Sunburst), next is an 80's Cimar Superstrat a friend gave me, next is my Cherry Red PRS SE Custom 24 (I'm going to replace the original trem with a Floyd Rose cause the original trem just wouldn't stay in tune), and finally my Fender Squier P-Bass (some replacement parts from Stewmac got it up and running again).

The guitar that's at uni is an Ibanez S420WK, which I've decided I don't really like very much since the pickups are a bit too overbearing for my tastes (they are an Infinity 1 and an Infinity 2), the guitar in the wardrobe is a Fender Mexican Strat with a black body and white scratchplate, when I finally get it back up and running again with a new neck I'll post a pic of it in this thread for you guys.

Of course, the Les Paul is my main gigging guitar, a friend of mine is doing some service work on my Marshall MA100C amp cause it keeps blowing fuses, it's looking like the amp needs a set of new power valves and a replacement output transformer, fortunately my friend offered to replace the valves and transformer in exchange for a Super Vee trem bridge so it won't cost me much money, hopefully.

Many guitars have come and gone from my life, starting with a Hofner Club 50 back in 1971, but I was down to a single budget acoustic by the late 90s.

Just before Christmas in 1997, I was dispatched by my mother-in-law to buy a starter acoustic for my father-in-law, and accidentally wound up buying a second hand G&L Legacy Special as well. Thus began this chapter of my journey.

Left to right: L'arrivee OM-3R (50th birthday present to self!), G&L ASAT Classic semi-hollow, G&L ASAT Classic Special (with faux binding and contoured back), G&L Legacy special with Kinman AV-N pickups, PRS Single Cut. At the back, G&L Tribute JB (for home recording) and the body of my in-progress PBG JM 12-string.

The G&Ls more or less take turns for live playing. They are all a bit different but each can cover pretty much the full range of which I'm capable. The PRS sounds fantastic, but it's too nice to subject to the risk of dings and scratches, so mainly stays home.

I play through a Boss ME-80 into a Hughes and Kettner Puretone combo with a THD Hot Plate power soak.

The Maton has served me very well over the years, but was getting a little dusty with lack of use. Thanks to some new friends I started gigging again and I got the GAS bug. I started looking for a 12-string acoustic, but most that I played had a real tinny/jangly sound to them that I wasn't fond of. I then came across the Ibanez 8-String acoustic. It has octave courses on the D & G strings, and it just gives the chords a fuller sound without the jangle. Unplugged it sounds above average, but it produces heaps of volume when played hard. Plugged into an amp or sound system, and it comes alive thanks to the excellent Fishman pickup in it.

I finally got around to dragging all of them into one room of the house and setting them up for a photo. These are the monsters that lurk about the FrankenLab!
15563

Back row L-R: Epiphone Casino Circa late 90's, Dobro Hound dog deluxe round neck, Ibanez MMM1 Baritone, Antonino Lorca student classical acoustic, $90 Chinese Cash Converters Squire Strat (Goes well for $90!!).

Front Row: Eastman AR605CE Archtop, Takamine EN20 Jumbo.

At a pinch i can part with most of them, though the Eastman would be a wrench. The Epi and the Takamine you would need to prise from my cold dead hands. I love those two guitars and they have been with me through a lot of personal upheaval.

To be honest, the Tak is the best sounding one of the lot, I've not had a large range of high end acoustics available to me, but everyone who has played it loves it.

I also realise reviewing that photo that i have omitted my Steinberger Spirit six string. It's around the lab somewhere!

The two on the extreme left are the two inside guitars at the moment; a Vantage AV325 Avenger au naturel with P90s and uprated hardware all round: it also has an unfinished neck which makes it a honey to play! Behind is a Westone Spectrum LX, a H/S/H with trick switching and a locking trem - a great litttle all rounder.

(rack in front, l-r) Westone Spectrum ST, Westone Spectrum MX, Westone Spectrum GTBass, Westone Spectrum GT, Electra Phoenix X195, Commodore lap steel. And a Vantage VS696-12.

Most have been fettled in some way - witness the paint on 4 or 5 of them or had pickups changed out; uprated hardware on most - locking tuners, string trees, output jacks, pots and caps. The Corsair Avenger is a tribute to my father who flew the F4U-1D Corsair in the Pacific during W2; it currently has the neck off to have the headstock re-finished as I wasn't happy with the waterslide decals I'd done. It has a Tonerider ACII in place of the MMK 45 that resided there, and trick switching courtesy of Weirdbits: cheers, bro!!

Thanks, man - and yeah, I did indeed and I could justify it because I was playing out and 'needed' the sound that another could give me! ;) Now, though, they sit in their cases, under a tarp in the shed.... :(

These are all, bar 2, products of the Matsumoku plant in Japan between 1978 and 1987 and are just superb playing guitars!!

Yes, they did, and I assume stiil do, make a fine guitar! Warped necks; the very thought makes my teeth itch, eh! They are in a cool corner, and under cover with silica gel bags in each case - they haven't moved so far!

The Vantage range encompassed basic to exotic, and whilst I played a VA 900 onstage for 20+ years without backup, nowadays I'd take the P90 Avenger because it's light, handy and eminently playable!

The lap steel is a Made in NZ Commodore and was made in the late 50s... I think! It had a really weird, oddball output jack that I replaced with a standard 6mm jack but is otherwise OEM, and a real beast! I use it in C6, E9, Em or G11. Being a six string limits it a bit, but it's still great fun to play!!

no worries Corsair, if you mean under a ventilated patio they should be fine. In my early days of guitar building a mate left a neck to cure in my hot shed over a Perth summer (not very well ventilated) and the neck warped to an unusable state. My shed probably gets above 50 degrees centigrade though on a hot Perth day

Rightio....I would like to introduce you to my newest addition to my guitar herd, this is my brand new Joey Jordison BC Rich Warlock II guitar:

16202

It is leaning against my Marshall MA100C 2 X 12 100 Watt all valve guitar amp in my loungeroom, I bought it as a Christmas present for myself on lay by at the Top End Pro Music shop last year, and I paid it all off on the 3rd of January this year.

It cost me Au $720.00 all up, I am really happy with it so far, so, it's definitely a keeper.

It has a pretty nice buzz-free low action on it, which makes it pretty easy for me to play it without a bit of pain in my left hand, which I use for fretting (I'm right-handed), it only has two controls on it, a three-way pickup selector, and a single volume control, that's fine cause I very rarely touch the tone controls on my Hot Rod Strat, the two stock BC Rich pickups are humbuckers, and they sound fine and work for me, the guitar has a genuine Floyd Rose Special double-locking trem installed on it, and it seems to perform pretty well, definitely much better than the supposedly superior Ibanez Edge II ZR trem that's installed on my Ibanez RG350DXZ guitar, the body of the Warlock II is made from solid NATO Mahogany, from what I've read online, the 24 fret neck is Maple with what looks like a Rosewood fretboard, the fretboard has light-coloured dot markings along one edge, and there are no fretboard inlays apart from the Murderdolls insignia, in Red, the Murderdolls were a Horror-Punk band that formed in the early 2000's, which featured Joey Jordison (ex Slipknot drummer) on guitar.

I guess I have a thing for guitars with jagged-edges on them,eh?....lol.

Cheers bro, that Marshall amp was an expensive bit of kit to buy, I think from memory it cost me something like Au$1300.00, I bought it on lay by from Sounds Of Music in Casuarina a few years ago, but I couldn't do much gigging with it because it had a nasty habit of blowing fuses at random times, it took me at least a year of waiting for a local Tech to fix it for me so that it no longer blew fuses, turned out that the power transformer was really designed to run on 230V AC rather than our 240V AC system, that meant that the +HT being supplied to the power valves was higher than they could withstand, it's all good now and I can gig with it.

It's worth paying the money for expensive gear, since you get better sound from it, how's your new amp going?

You might have to invest in a Hercules or Selby style guitar stand Doc. Something that only holds the guitar by the neck. The design of that body will not sit properly in a normal guitar stand, and from what you've said before, I doubt your Landlords would be happy about you putting holes in your walls to install a wall hanger!!

You're right, I guess there's nothing stopping me from designing a suitable guitar stand for the Warlock though, might be an interesting project for this year.

From left to right: Fender Stratocaster USA 1977 (bought in London in 1978), Squier lefty Stratocaster (righthand stringed) '82 re-issue, Fender Stratocaster MIM '62 re-issue and the last is an Epiphone UltraIII (bought in the same shop in London where I bought the Olympic White strat).

These guys are my go-to's:

17400

Maton SRS60C - Best Acoustic I've ever heard I think, IMO
GuitarFetish Parts-V - Yay LP headstock on a V, and Bigsby :)
Squier Classic Vibe Thinline Telecaster - Amazing guitar. Screw any stigma about Squier being meh, this thing is brilliant

The other couple I have:

17402
Kaitoh MGC20 - Just to have a classical basically :D

17401
Gretsch Electromatic G5420T - This one's also on the culling block, because it's just not quite my thing. Beautiful guitar though.

Hoping to expand over the next few weeks but... Money...

There's a joke in there somewhere but as this site is PG rated, best left alone and on through to the keeper.

I like the look and shape of the acoustic on the left sitting beside the Marshall. Was unaware you had a Marshall? Need to hear more tunes through it as both your electrics should sizzle through one of them.

Zandit75
28-02-2017, 03:22 AM
The Marshall is not mine, but borrowed from Trev, who has done the majority of my videos for me. It's on loan from him for as long as I want it, as it is a spare and not needed for his gigging etc.
The amp is a Marshall Valvestate VS100R. 100 watter of coarse.
It has a two button foot switch for two lots of distortion which I muck around with occasionally.
I'm still trying to learn how to use an amp, and how to get the sound I want from it. I need a new lead though, I believe that has been the cause of my gremlins with my builds.

Sorry Waz, I missed your question about the Maton.
This was my first guitar. I purchased it in '95 for $1,300 including hard case, and had been my only guitar until 2015 when I bought the 8-String Ibanez sitting next to it. Then I came across you lot last year, and now my collection has doubled!

The Maton is a EM725C, which is supposedly a special edition model produced for the "World of Music" chain of music stores.
I contacted Maton about this guitar a couple of years ago to find out what was so special about it, but it's basically the same as a stock standard EM325C. It's a standard Dreadnought sized acoustic with the AP5 pickup system installed. It does look larger than a standard Dread, but that may be the angle it's sitting on. Just to add to this, the Ibanez sitting next to it has a slightly larger lower bout than the Maton, even though it doesn't look like it!

I'm surprised with how the two sides of the top have changed colour over the years considering they are normally book-matched at the factory.

It uses low impedance pups, a 'decade' pot, 3 way tone switch as well as normal tone pots, low and high output switch. Tricky to understand at first, but once you are used to it, you can get any sound you want with a beautiful clean tone. It was designed by Les and his guitar of choice, although his was black so much cooler. Best thing is, I picked it up in 1985 for $600.

Something like a P90. Very clear tone. No humming. Really nice for soft jazz to metal.

Even with the amp turned up to 11 and 'overdrive overload', they are super crisp. I put them through my mates old tube Marshall and I almost wet myself.

They have set me on the path to tone perfection.

Here's a bit of mine...

L to R: modified PBG Jazz bass kit; modified PBG TL-1 kit; Squier VM Jaguar; Fender 62 reissue jazz bass; Squier Bass VI.
19094

L to R: Fender P-bass; Fender P-bass; Gretsch 5120; Relic'd Squier tele; homemade fretless bass.
19095

Not shown: Maton TE-1 accoustic, Taylor T5, a Baby Taylor acoustic, modified PBG "Surfmaster" ST-1 kit, a Variax bass and a Variax guitar (open to trades/selling on both of these), homemade "Maplecaster" bass, Fender strat, 1/2 size double bass, a couple of ukes, a Cort acoustic bass, a lap steel - and no doubt a few more I can't find scattered around the house!

On the amp front, there's this SWR Baby Blue II for quieter bass work (I use an 800w Acoustic Image power amp with a Schroeder 212 cabinet for loud stuff).
19096

And for guitars there's these two: a Fender Vibro Champ XD and a Fender Deluxe 112 Plus.

here's my collection ... you can see I've only recently started getting GAS ... the herd will be growing over time!

I've lined them up in chronological order ... there's quite a bit of history here ...
from left to right ...

Gretsch copy from the 60's that I learned on and played during my high school years, still gets the odd workout. It'll be the subject of a restoration project soon.
Steinberger that I got in the 80's, and which is still my "go-to" instrument. Got played a lot in the 80's and 90's while the band I was in was gigging
German made Warwick 6 string $$ Corvette that my family gave me as a 50th birthday present, weighs a ton, fun to play, really warm woody tone
PBG 5 string fretless J, my first foray into the world of guitar building, and the realisation that GAS is a thing! Makes all those great mwah sounds, especially with a bit of chorus & reverb
PBG 5 string P with a piezo bridge that I recently finished ...

I wonder if there's room for a thread titled "guitars which I should have kept" or "guitar regret"?
Before the Steinberger I had a Washburn B-20, which was shaped a bit like an explorer. It was fun to play and looked & sounded pretty good (or so I thought at the time!) ... I had to sell it to get the 'berger. The sentimental part of me still wishes that I had it.

You can't buy a genuine 'berger anymore but you can always build an Explorer Bass, and they come in 5 string too! Mine was my 1st build and have learned so many better ways to build things since but it still looks and plays great, albeit a very long and heavy beast.

Thanks Rob. The colour was an accident that grew on me. Full strength DT OS was too dark and at the time the batch of CG that I had was too yellow, hence why I went into the lab to experiment and the rest is history. All part of the fun involved with these builds and thankfully it turned out ok.

From left to right (back then front):
Cheapo Gear4Music upright bass*
First kit guitar - tele style that I hacked about and built in an amplifier.
Line 6 Variax Acoustic 700.
PRS SE Semi-hollow.
Hofner Club 50 (original not modern).
Vicente Sanchis m1.900.
Epiphone AJ220SCE - solid top, built in pick-up and tuner, £135 new? Thank you very much!
Samick mandolin - gift from a mate years ago, doesn't get a lot of love.
Cole Clark Fat Lady - the best of the bunch. :)

I think I've also got a cheap hohner nylon string in a mate's garage, very much a camping guitar that one.

* magic trick - wooden end pin transforms the sound, couldn't tell you how but even non bass players noticed when I changed it.

Yes, I can now. Presumably wasn't made public to start with?

Did exactly the same thing both times as far as I'm aware.

I'm not seeing it either...unless your collection is a grey no entry sign.

cheers, Mark.

Now I can see it. Nice collection. Double bass needs a colour correction, the rest blend in nicely.

cheers, Mark.

Hmm, I can't see it either, but I can find it via the link. I re-hosted it here.

Cool looking collection.

Thanks Sonic, no idea why it's working for some but not others. Just used the same approach as in my build thread and that seems to work fine. Ho hum.

It keeps coming and going for me. I can see Sonic's pic fine. Maybe it's the way the forum software handles it. Is it less than 1500 pixels wide? If so, it may be any host on the fly resizing is a bit dodgy.

Ah, no it's not. That could be it then.

Hi all,
I bought this for my son about 5 years ago but he was never interested in it, so it's just sat in it's case. To be honest we'd forgotten about it until cleaning out the wardrobes last week. I began searching online to find out more about it but there's almost nothing online. Then I stumbled across this forum. Cheers from Australia!3060630607

Vantage Invader I, made by Matsumoku, possibly about 1984 - the serial number will give us the year and month of manufacture! I have an Invader II, but this is the first time I've seen an Invader I; as you've found out, they're not well documented.
The pickup should be an MMK 45, Matsumokus' take on the DiMarzio SD, and mine has a graphite neck...

Hi corsair,
Thanks for the reply.
The serial number 4020024 (at least that's the only number I could find on it.)
Normally you can find anything on google so I was a bit stumped when nothing was coming up. LOL

February, 1984. Possibly... ;)
