Great stuff, Kimball :)

I must add a note of warning though...
Be very careful when buying Aussie tonewoods online from Tasmania.
Quite a few suppliers claim to have kiln dried their timbers down to 6-9, but.....

It is a very good idea to rack and sticker these timbers as soon as you get them and leave for at least 6 months to balance out.
Also, dont buy it unless it is quarter sawn and you are getting the actual piece shown on the website.

If in doubt, ask for photos of the timber with the moisture reader attached showing the water content.
Saves a lot of aggro, believe me. Been there, done that :)

I wonder if Ironwood would be suitable for building guitars?

I wonder if Ironwood would be suitable for building guitars?

Iron word is incredibly dense and heavy.
You normally have to drill it just to nail, and definitely to screw through it.
It would be very hard on router bits too.

It might be good for details or accents, but I think it's not generally the right timber for bodies and necks...

Imagine carrying an Ironwood Les Paul around! Probably worse than Wokka's shape!

it would weigh a tonne!
It's not nice to talk about Wokka's shape like that, I think he carries himself well....
