I'm sure we've all seen some particularly dodgy info slung around on the interwebs, some funny, some stupid, some downright dangerous. Here is a place to share bad repairs, bad ideas and bad advice. This could (hopefully) get interesting.

I don't know about you guys but I always take the glass off my new tubes, it's more like just a wrapper they put on in the factory, work well with light bulbs too.

some dodgy tips there Pabs!
Not sure about valve tubes with no glass, you would think the glass is there for a reason.
That locking nut install looks like the truss rod socket almost had a flat edge on it he'd sanded so low, be surprised if the truss rod would turn with the locking nut screwed down and the mounting screws were very close to the truss rod socket channel

Must admit this is the first time I have heard of taking the glass off tubes... But then again I dont mess with electrical stuff after getting booted by 500 volts at 60 amps when I was an apprentice :)

Did that w@nk#r say that was a Mighty Mite neck. Those things cost $200-300 bucks! I couldn't watch the whole thing as it made me sick. Did he actually measure the nut height, or did he just guess?

The glass is most definitely there for a reason, Woks. To protect stray fingers from live voltage for a start (they get hot, so its a bad idea to touch them anyway) but the main reason is to isolate the valve in a vacuum for heat transfer. No glass, no vacuum. They will not function well, if at all.

cheers Pablo, I didn't know the exact reason but that is good information. I knew the tubes got hot !
I don't run a valve amp head anymore, got expensive replacing and biasing tubes, so use a digital amp head now

Yeah I used to work with a girl who had this happen to her husband, found him in the shed with his throat cut, really sad, and a great reminder to BE CAREFUL!!!

And then there are routers....
Make sure that bit has at least 10-15mm of the saft locked into the chuck.
There is a routerbit residing on my neighbours roof that parted company and took off at 30,000 rpm.
Lucky for me it flew away from me through the open window....

wokkaboy
05-03-2015, 07:59 AM
wow Dave that's a nasty accident. Sad Barge your work friend who lost her husband.
Yes grinders and routers must cause the most damage out of power tools. Jarrod almost lost a thumb using a hand held router about 3-4 months ago.
So be careful everyone.
I've seen a hand held rotary tool with stone bit not clamped in the chuck go through a glass and end up about 6 metres away travelling along the workbench, that was an eye opener ! Luckily we only lost a glass of champagne !

I lost almost a 1/4'' of my left middle finger due to not paying attention when I was using a chop saw. Took me over a year to relearn how to play guitar.
Yes, please be careful. Body parts can't be replaced.

They really are. My biggest problem was multiple surgeries to my finger. I learned to play without that finger. After a few years I started to get enough feeling back in it to use it again.

Stan I couldn't play at all for about 6 months cause of bandages etc and man that was murder!!! It all worked out though cause of the finger I developed my own style of playing.

Keloooe so glade you didn't lose it!!!

Check your tools before using them. My solder iron's tip fell out today whilst I was soldering a fuzz pedal and almost landed in my lap! The screw had gotten loose after so many uses and I had never checked to see if it was tight.

This guitar has 68 frets. 68! How skinny would your fingers have to be to fret anywhere past the 5th or so. Don't even want to think of the microtonal garbage that would come from playing it. Also, dodgy paintjob.

Agree very average paint job and is the Floyd trem cavity about 4 miles too long ?

I don't think the person selling those glass-less valves realized that by removing the glass they rendered the valves practically useless, the person obviously didn't understand how a valve worked much less what is required for a valve to work in the first place, I bet that person wondered why their valves weren't selling.

That silvering the person is referring to is what's called the getter, it's purpose is to absorb any trace gasses left inside the glass envelope after it has been sealed after all the air has been pumped out, this does a couple of things, firstly it ensures that the heater doesn't burn out, secondly it ensures that the valve can operate properly.

God....whatever possessed that person to go and cut two huge holes out of the body of that Stratocaster?, what were they thinking?, and yep, I reckon at some stage those springs probably would short out the pickups.

And I don't see the logic in joining two trem-springs together like that either.

Murphy's 1st law of soldering irons
If you drop a soldering iron you will always catch the wrong end.

Many years ago I stood on a hot soldering iron wearing black nylon socks, the result was a groove in the sole of my foot sealed by a melted and dried black dressing

Ouch, I bet that must have hurt something chronic, one time I stupidly stuck the tip of my right index finger into some hot melted cheese and ended up with a decent-sized blister on the end of my finger, needless to say I never did it again.

Oh, one time when I was a little 5 or 6 year old kid, I was running around with a balloon and ran straight into the side of a hot barbecue because I was watching the balloon, rather than where I was going, I ended up with a big burn right down the side of my left forearm, and my mum got told off by my dad cause she was supposed to be looking after us, had to have bitumen dressings put on my burnt arm for a month and my arm bandaged up.
