Neck to body clamp.........

nice looking jig DB, do we get a prize for getting the correct answer or a NR sentence reduction ?
I haven't seen this so you must have recently built it. I'm confused but am thinking its for lining up the set neck of G type guitars without having to put your bridge posts in ?
I don't think I'm anywhere near warm !

wokkaboy

you got me thinking now DB, I think the bridge is just a way of holding the clamp into the jig, so that put me off.
Let me think about it a bit more

dingobass

Not even close :)

wokkaboy

dingobass
29-01-2015, 04:01 PM
No clues.... Or is there a clue there that you just havent spotted yet??

wokkaboy
29-01-2015, 04:05 PM
is it a new device to clock Magpies fans ? haha not really, I can see some straps could be the clue.
I'm leaving work so I'll have a think on my ride home

DB you might have to put a prize on this competition. Did Gavmeister get it right? I'm still stumped

dingobass

Woks, no one has come even close to working it out..
The nutty professor strikes again :-)

ok, so its a mysterious luthier tool......
It is principally a clamp, which means it has to hold something in place...heavy duty bolts suggest it is bolted onto a desk or wall to give added strength and support weight of either the neck or body.

So, thinking orderly.....
Paint the guitar.....clamp would cover bare wood that needed to be painted so its not that despite the Dingotone bottles in two frames.

Holding the neck in place while it glues or is bolted....told that this is not the case and body probably wouldn't fit. so discounted.

Could certainly be used to keep the guitar level when routing bindings......???? What sez you DB?

Could also be used to hold the headstock in place at the nut when drilling tuner holes into the headstock, but this would rip the wood when the drill exited underneath. So can't be this....

Not enough clamps involved to be used to glue a veneer on the headstock....but the extra clamps could be added later.

Could be used a started clamp for clamping the fretboard to the neck....I always need an extra hand to do this but again more clamps needed which don't appear in picture.

If the jig was rotated and attached to the edge of a table, a bone nut would fit perfectly in those jaws to be shaped, dressed and set to receive stings.......BINGO!!!!!!!!!! (Bone nut lying quietly and inconspicuously besides the two bottles of Dingotone......... :)

Is it some sort of press?

Gav's right it's a nut clamp. hence the recessed edge.

The Gavmiester is 90% correct..
The clamping jig is to hold any bone nut blank.
But... There is more to this jig than just clamping...

Thar rounded front edge on the timber has something to do with it I reckon, but what...
Does the word "radius" come into the equation per chance?

rockmof

Whatever it is, it sure is going to be handy for multiple jobs.

wokkaboy

DB the bridge is there so you can run the 6 strings through to the nut slots to check the depth of the slots.
I still like my idea it's a device to wack Magpie fans hahah

Bwahh. have you got anything to fix braces in my Epi Acoustic. :P

I'm about to build a couple of little wind out presses from a couple of 80 mm turnbuckles and some clamp knobs. :)

For a mirror I just bought a an A4 sheet of mirror that I'll cut into 3 70mm by 295 segments and use tape to hinge it so I can shove it in the sounf hole so I can see whats busted. Had the USB Borryscope in last night but could not get enough bend to actually have the lens far enough away to see what's wrong.

Oh the bridge is there so he can line up saddles. :)

I can see this is messing with peeps heads :)

The bridge is there as a clamp to hold the irwin in place... It was just lying around so it got used for this job, saved stuffing around cutting and drilling a chunk of steel....

The radius on the block is purely for clearance.... But what is it clearing?

wokkaboy
30-01-2015, 02:10 PM
your not wrong there DB !
the radius of the base block is to have clearance for your nut files.
I said in an earlier comment the bridge was to hold down the clamp so I must be 10% correct ?
See my comment posted 4:26pm yesterday.
That bloody bridge threw everyone off !

dingobass
30-01-2015, 02:53 PM
Not clearance for nut files either.....

Hare and Forbes supplied the one (spindle sander) that I use. I think DB got his one there too. They are fantastic for the horns of the guitar (sanding them) amongst many other things.

My bobbin sander is an ocillating type, made by Schepparch.. Is German, is good :)

With this setup I can rough out a nut in about 35 seconds, a few swipes with the rasp and its ready for slotting.
All up, I can now Finish a nut from rough blank to polised beauty in about ten minutes...

Yes, yes & yes.
Too easy for you dudes. Made a 4" and 8" length block which seem accurate enough. Tool dismantled now.
Reckon I'll leave the tricky stuff to DB.
