Up to date, neck is done and thanks to Wokks left over chunk of tree I managed to make a stunning fret board with mother of pearl binding. Going to leave this one without inlays (why spoil that beautiful wood).
Body is mahogany with a master grade flame maple 8mm cap. This is the third model in my little series and instead of all the curves and cut outs she will be old school flat body with MOP binding.
will post pics when I work out how

nice one Jarrod, glad you salvaged something usable in rest of the blank, that neck pocket engraving is way cool, might have to put one on the scratch tele with yours, DB's and my name on it. The PBG collaboration axe !

So we should do the engraving sooner than later as we have to clamp the body to the CNC, be in touch maybe coming weekend if that suits

jarrod

I'm away on Thursday, can do it after the body is done it doesn't need any clamp force to engrave

Apreciate the very kind words guys. And thanks Gav but remember it all starts with finding high quality chunks of tree and thats half your battle over.

Man that's one nice axe. Is there a reason why you did the string through v configuration in the opposite direction to convention?

jarrod
28-11-2014, 06:20 PM
Yes basically to be different. There is no wrong or right way really as in there is no effect on set up etc....I wanted the tune o matic set up on this model to really stand it apart from the othere Nebular model. Just to give people options really.

Yeah DB is only interested getting templates cut with the CNC. Rest of his work is the DB way - by hand !

jarrod
29-11-2014, 09:43 AM
This is still finished by hand guy's. The only difference is you use a machine router and templates and I dont use templates. A cnc does not put binding on nor does it design or sand or finish the guitar. At the end of the day the guitar is still all me like your templet routings are still all you. I admit the neck is made easier but hey there is still this clown designing it to requirements. A cnc will save time and deliver accuracy and that is all. It does not fret and does not choose the wood it cuts, it does not decide on electronics and again it does not sand the final shape. If you think a guitar that comes off a cnc is great because a machine has cut out the blank then you are sadley mistaken. A lot of effort and planning goes into design drafting and finish and most importantly the set up. By the way DB I listened to your greatly appreciated advice and this one is being finnished Behlen instrument lacquer (nitrocellulose), so far I'm loving working with it.

I agree with everything the J-rod said above...
Only real difference between the hand crafted and cnc product are the subtle nuances that can only happen when building from the ground up by hand, these human touches can never be replicated by a machine.......

The cnc allows anyone who can program to build a great axe as there is no need to posses great skills with hand tools (which takes years of practice to gain) therefore more folk can enjoy the thrill of building, and who can argue with that?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but jarrod, you've don't stacks of by hand scratchies hey? It's just a progression.

jarrod
29-11-2014, 04:28 PM
I have done two by hand and done alot home work on the science of building a high quality guitar and how and what woods / finishes / set ups / strings and even hardware really effects the instrument and ofcause I take on board any advice from DB and Gavmiester give

What have I actually learn't ?
I should have just stopped at my first kit guitar lol....

Could think of far worse things to spend money on. I've been you tubing cnc tonight. Oh my gosh they're amazing. There is a schecter factory tour where they give you the run down on the cnc procedures. Same as what you've said, it does nothing until you tell it to, but all the finishing is by hand, it's just a computerised router. If it speeds up the process why not I reckon. It takes a special kind of person to tell if it's been cnc'd or hand routed. DB Defs could, but I'd have no idea, just as the majority of the players out there wouldn't. Keep it up mate, I love when you post updates on your scratchies.

Well pleasing to my ear DB and Wokks came around and had a play on my first Nebular. Wokks took to it so naturally and smashed some nice tunes out of her. DB put a retail price tag on it of $3000 . I wanted an opinion from the master and he didn't let me down. Nice playing by the way Wokks.

Yhep.... Nebular mk1 has a really sweet tone and there is only one way these babies can go and that is to get better..

But my fav axe is the fully chambered Telemonster, man is she schweeeeeeeeeet :)

As for me going down the cnc path, I could prolly build three or four axes in the time it would take me to work out how to switch the thing on let alone program it ;)

By the way DB I still havn't made the kitchen cupboard doors lol...

Third coat of nitro ready for cutting right back and then a thin one to one mix over the top. made a cap on the head stock and put a mop purfling around and sanded it with a slight radius over the whole thing to give it that 3d kind of effect

Thanks Stan but thats a big call.
Any hoooos all nitrocellulose coats are done so as soon as she is cured in a couple of weeks I will cut and polish her up to beautiful shine.

Stunning. Is spraying Nitro harder than 2k or acrylic?

jarrod
04-12-2014, 10:15 PM
The prep work is a hell of a lot more intense. Nitro is very thin and does not fill any grain at all like 2k or Acrylic. You can leave it a day for your 3rd coat etc... and all it does is soften the coats underneath so grain filling is a very important part of the process. This Guitar was sanded back to 400 grit before I even put the stain on. Then it had 2 coats of Vinyl sealer which were then cut back being careful not to cut back through the stain. I have done six coats all up and cutting it back each coat to smoothen it off and keeping the overall finish thin. The spraying alone has taken a week and will now be left for 2 weeks at the least before all the solvents have vented out and the lacquer has stopped shrinking. The actual spraying is no different and your gun settings must be good and constant. Also I will add that nitrocellulose is far more toxic so a spray booth and head to toe cover up with a high quality breathing mask is a must.
It's a far more expensive form of spraying a guitar then good old acrylic and as this guitar ages it will yellow off slightly and give that vintage look that we all love. One thing you just can't do with nitro lacquer is rush it .
