View Full Version : Wokkas scratch blackheart sassafras tele

G'day all,
I received the best SMS from Jarrod today and it made my day. About 2 months ago I dropped off a blank of blackheart sassafras (far right in first pic - the blackbutt slab next to it was what I made the bar table and stools out of - this was the wood show stash)
Anyway I got an SMS from Jarrod (2nd pic) showing the tele he's cutting on his CNC is almost done. He's put on some hardware to give me and idea how it looks. I'm more than stoked with how its looking.
So after an email to DB he is going to help me build a neck for it, using a three piece tazzy blackwood and rock maple laminate .
So I am pretty excited about this build.
At this stage probably going to just clear the body or possibly a really thinned down amber coat.
Watch this space.
I'm picking up the body on Sunday morning. Can't wait to see it. Cheers heaps again Jarrod and DB !

Sweet looking chunk of tree Woks. Good call on making a custom neck for it, that Blackheart deffinatly deserves a nice neck.

Don't know if I've seen many Blackheart Sassafras solid bodies, mainly you just see it used for acoustic's. I'll be keeping an eye on this one. :)

Will interested to see how it sounds mate. Never heard a solid with this wood.

YES! that is all...

wokkaboy
30-10-2014, 03:21 AM
cheers fellas, the knock test of the blank sounded pretty good so no reason why a solid sassafras won't sound good. I'll have to get some nice hardware for this baby. Once the stain or clear is on I'll ask for tips on what colour hardware - chrome/gold or black. Think black may go well with the grain but I'll see how it turns out.
Got to love living in Perth being about a 25 min drive from Jarrod and DB !

cheers everyone, yes the planets have aligned, firstly the Tasmanian special timbers being at the woodshow for the first time, then Jarrod buys a CNC and of course good old DB coming to the rescue to help me build an uber cool neck. Can't wait to see the body in the flesh Sunday morning Jarrod ! thanks again mate

Looking good Wokka. There's some crazy grain in that bit of wood.

wokkaboy
03-11-2014, 11:19 AM
cheers Pablo, yeah sure is. Jarrod did a great job of the CNCing, there were cracks and knots all over the blank and managed to miss most of them. I've just had to fill a small crack on the top and bottom edge of the top. I'm also got an offcut to make a control plate out of the same timber

AJ
03-11-2014, 12:27 PM

cheers PK, yeah as soon as I saw the blank piece at the wood show you would have needed a crowbar to prize it out of my hands
At the Melbourne show,I had enough trouble getting the missus to carry the bits of veneer, and when she seen me drooling at the black heart.. she went almost ballistic....... if you get my drift.. (she has a secret defined limit to weight n size that she is prepared to take on! :p)

04-11-2014, 09:39 AM
That's going to look amazing Warren. And all you had to do was cut away the bits that didn't look like a guitar. ;)

04-11-2014, 09:45 AM
haha cheers Rob. Yes I am very lucky to have the services of Jarrod's CNC and DB's neck making expertise. I just got to sand out the white blob on the top where I've filled some small cracks. Liking how deep the DT clear coat is

06-11-2014, 11:22 PM
I managed to cut a control cover out of the sassafras, Jarrod had a perfect size and width piece for it. Needs a bit more final shaping but its close. Got a second clear coat on and loving the Dingotone clear coats

wokkaboy
06-11-2014, 11:24 PM

@ Nicko this is the first time I've got Jarrod to cut a body I normally cut my own with a router and template. Jarrod cut me some CNC templates so next scratch build I'll do myself. Just wanted to see how the CNC would cut the sassafras

wokkaboy
17-11-2014, 11:27 AM
I'm sure Stan you would do a great job mate !
We've made a few chopping boards as a side project, Wayne has made some tele shaped ones !

wokkaboy
23-11-2014, 08:56 AM

jarrod
26-11-2014, 11:49 AM
Looking great Wokks, you gotta be proud of this one. I find building necks quite easy on the cnc lol... Are the art of hand crafting and satisfaction and hard work will all be worth it in the end.

wokkaboy
26-11-2014, 11:53 AM
cheers Jarrod, looking forward to finishing the neck then clear coats. I've learnt alot more building this neck

jarrod
26-11-2014, 12:29 PM
Yes the neck is the tricky bit hey?still it's much more for satisfying building one

wokkaboy
26-11-2014, 12:32 PM
yeah you're dead right Jman. You take the neck for granted in a kit.
Might still tee up to get the neck pocket engraved next visit I go to see DB if you are in Perth.
Maybe put our 3 names and the date of completion

wokkaboy
01-12-2014, 11:50 AM
got 4th clear coat on the body, its starting to get a natural gloss. I'm planning a trip to DB's Friday so hope to get the neck frets dressed, then I'll do final shaping of the neck and should be ready for clear coats after that

wokkaboy
01-12-2014, 01:52 PM

Keeps on getting better and better man. Planning my first proper scratchie and i have this and jarrods to inspire me. You guys rock. Thanks for sharing!

Dude it's not a scratchy you want to build but more a fully sic custom instrument. a scratchy is your trial guitar (your first build) when that guitar has the quality to out shine a Les Paul hanging in the shop then you just built a custom guitar. And you know we will all help you to build that custom guitar, dam shame you dont live in Perth man cause there's luthier shit in the air over here.

jarrod
01-12-2014, 03:52 PM
What wokks has build here is serious custom guitar.

01-12-2014, 04:14 PM
Funny that, been asked a fair bit lately to go work it Karratha. Closer to Perth than I am now haha. Totally agree mate. Still finding my feet with a router so baby steps. I hope my first build proper comes out Amazeballs, and then I'll shoot for pro levels of workmanship. Thanks mate.

Thanks all for the nice comments. All the final assembly took alot longer than I thought, and didn't plan for the bridge being a string through, so found 6 gold ferrules and gold neck plate from a FV kit. My drill press didn't have the reach to drill the string through holes so had to wing it with the hand drill, the ferules lined up pretty good considering. Got the neck, bridge and control cover screwed in, and both pup cavities shielded. Just need to sort out the neck pup wiring mod for the 4 way switch and do the wiring
