Hey guys, just want to hear about your lucky deals that almost seem to good to be true. I want to hear yours before I tell you about mine, don't want to seem like I'm boasting but I'm pretty excited!

Haha ok. Had a good few lucky months. Latest scores just blew me away. First one, I have a regular at work who I've become mates with. He builds boats on his days off and me guitars so showing pics of boats and axes and what not. The other night he comes in and says an an auction site he goes on has a stack of guitars on there for auction but its on the goody so probably no help to me. My family is on the gold coast. The auction house is literally 1km from my folks place. He reckons they're just cheapo ones but check it out when I get a chance. Turns out a shop closed down and their stock that didn't get returned to the supplier is being liquidated. Tanglewood acoustics and ukuleles. 60 of them. Ended up picking 7 acoustics, a uke with hard case and an electric baritone uke for well under a quarter of retail. Will be keeping 2 acoustics, a grand reserve super folk and a dred, and possibly the electric uke. Most have tanglewood preamps, and the others have fishman. Well pleased with that.

Score 2. As all of you have, I've got the build bug pretty bad now, and its only natural one starts to think about a scratch build. My brother who also works up at the mines is the safety manager for a building company for the Bowen basin. Asked him today if he has a router and rough price to buy one, hard to use etc. Comes in to the restaurant a few hours later. Turns out the company houses employees in properties they have purchased as an investment. They are selling a house, so the boys have moved out and the house gets cleaned up. Guess what was left behing. Skil router. Looks well used but works fine, and it was free. Comes back again with a stack of wood to practice on.

The gods of GAS are looking out for me.

My recent one was a bucket load 'o veneer. On the sly I've been playing with bentwood veneer rings (pretty straightforward to make and can come out nice)... and looking for veneer. This bloke has jarrah veneer sheets for sale, just round the corner from me. Pop round and it looks OK - dry, but nice figure, some ash as well, etc... Turns out he needs to empty his garage and no one else has shown any interest in the veneer. Quick discussion and a bit of cash later and I have a bootful of veneer and he has one thing less cloging up his garage...

And the rings...

No photos of the Jarrah / ash ones yet, but should have a couple ready soon and they look pretty neat...

Top and bottom ring - Silky oak with maple inners
Middle ring - American Walnut with maple inner

Good score mate. What's the veneer down the bottom? Dude those rings look unreal. Well done! You selling them?

Brendan
27-09-2014, 02:48 PM
Bottom veneer is a couple of sheets of burl. The three rings above are the first of a couple. Considering selling them - got a mate who's made the same suggestion and suggested selling them through an art gallery he's connected with. I'll see what he says when he sees them in the flesh :). May pay to feed my BAS:).

Nowhere near as good, but I'm pretty chuffed at scoring a set of Fender wide range pickups for $60. I've always thought these were really cool pickups, not quite single coil, not quite humbucker and pretty uncommon to find out of a guitar. And now I get to build a tele deluxe!

Brendan, don't know where you live but if there is a market set up down there, might be worth a look. On the gold coast they have a market on the beach walk in surfers. Its around $100 to rent the stall and it attracts so many people. Heaps of tourists picking up small, not too expensive items. I've got a friend who sells cakes and macarons one day a week and that is enough to put her through uni.

Pabs, sick buy! They're rad pups.

Spose I should post a few photos. The router is a plunge router but here are the acoustics.

Pretty cool Andrew! May check out my mate and some online options before I look into markets - ultimately if I can sell one every now and again, that will go towards feeding my BAS.

well done Andrew on the acoustics and Bman those rings and veneers look awesome.
I had a brainwave idea yesterday, had a slab of blackbutt and decided to make a small bar table for near the pizza oven, stained it in FW old baltic and its had a coat of tru oil. Hope to get another coat on later today. The slab of blackbutt cost me $140 from the wood show and I've cut off a 460mm long piece for a scratch build. It's one of the hardest timber I've cut so it will kill router bits and bandsaw blades pretty quickly !

cheers Andrew, just waiting for the weather to warm up and I'll be having lots of pizza and beer on the table. I had enough of the blackbutt slab left to make 2 matching stools, I built the first stool yesterday. I decided the timber is too hard for an axe body.
Believe it or not the stool seat has just been cleared so no red stain applied !

Lovin' that bar top Wokks, I bet she'll get a good workout:-)

Picked this pedal up on Gumtree, as new in the box, 200 big ones + free postage.
Pretty happy with that.

Barge, I have that exact unit. Good score. From memory, I paid about twice what you got yours for and I'm very happy with it. One of the easiest to use multis I've ever come across.

Yeah man, it works great hooked up to a daw. I sold it after using it exclusively live for ages, used my tube amp and the tone was just better I guess. Looking back, in a mix no one knows what your running, and I sure as he'll miss being able to run 2 rectos in stereo. I want the pod back haha.

2 years ago got an Epi LP Junior (normally around $200-$210), got it with new strings and got it cleaned up for only $140!!!

Without the strings it would have been $120!

Wicked deal. I got my esp ec1000 a few years back on a sweet gumtree deal. Basically an army guy from Sydney had 6 months leave so went to brissy to spend time with family. Got the esp up there for something to play as his main guitars were back home. After the 6 months he gave it to a mate who got deployed not long after. When he came back he got himself a vintage Tele and a les Paul so didn't have any use for the esp. An hour drive and $275 later she was mine. Still had the plastic protective sheets on the cavity covers. Stoked.

good score Andrew, there's some bargains to be had on gumtree. Its the case of right timing

ponch
04-10-2014, 07:14 AM
That's it. Unfortunately up here the only stuff to go up on gumtree is farming supplies. Can't shred a wire fence. Matter of fact I can't shred anyway haha

Nickosaurus

It's not too bad. A bit of wear and tear but it's going to be going on a 60s style paisley strat. Will post as I get closer to getting all the components together. For the price though I don't really care haha. $30 is worth the attempt on a vintage neck I think. :P

sounds good Nick, a worn neck will look cool on a 60's paisley strat anyway

Just drove an hour out to his place. Knocked/rang his phone/rang his mobile no answer. Got a text about 10 minutes later that he sold it. I even text him this morning at 9 letting him know I was coming. Absolutely livid right now.

wokkaboy
23-10-2014, 12:39 AM
that really sucks Nick, some people have no morals or standards.
I drove about 40 mins to pick up a gumtree sale about a year ago and when I got there he thought I was there to buy an acoustic guitar. He was selling a warlock guitar and about 10 guitar body templates for $40 so I said hold them for me I'm on my way. Ended up leaving with a crappy $20 acoustic, he'd promised the stuff to someone else !

Sweet deal Wednesdays brought to u by moranbah buy swap and sell Facebook page. I scored a crybaby that works great but has a fair scuff on her, and a ds1 that's practically brand new, not a mark on it. $50. Yeah buddy. He had a practice amp that he just sold before I got in as well, would have been great to keep in the shed where I build instead of going into the house to test.

wokkaboy
30-10-2014, 07:23 AM

DS1 was one of the best too. Now that boss are made in Korea there crap. Funny how the ch1-2 is an eighties pedal made in Japan and second hand is still fetching up to $300 which is $150 more than the latest crappy Korean CH3

Not a guitar item - but just bought an industrial granita making machine (with supplies and spares) from the local independent supermarket for $300. Good working order, he decided to retire it due to profitability.

It's a $1600 dual dispensing machine. He said I can buy the mixtures etc through him at cost.
Perfect for pool side summer fun!

...mmm just add Jim Beam to a cola mix on one side and raspberry for the kids on the other... this will get messy...

I'll bring it with me to the naughty room...

If you bring it to the naughty room it will have spirits in both sides.
I need to speak to DB about expanding the naughty room, its as overcrowded as an illegal immigrant boat. We may need a naughty warehouse soon !
