Just wondering how the stock pickups sound in the ib7. I've got one in the works ready to go and another coming as a custom order in October, just wondering if I need to swap out the pups for something meatier for a good metal tone.

Hey Andrew,
haven't seen many IB-7s built so not sure how the stock pups sound.
Might be on the safe side to upgrade them. You could always fit the stock pups and see how they sound and upgrade if needed

Thinking of getting the guitarheads hexbuckers. $50 a set! From the reviews I've read they sound pretty good.

17.4k ohms resistance on the bridge pup, woah !
$50 a set was US and postage will be ontop of that of course, but sounds pretty cheap for a set of 2 x 7 string buckers

They're the ones mate. Postage is $17 so not really a deal breaker. And you can coil tap them incase anyone wants a low f# single coil quack. Nobody? Anybody? Just me then haha

Talking about 8 string single coil quack, Tosin Abasi from Animals as leaders has a single coil in his 8 string to give that legendary F# quack....except his is dropped so its a low low E quack.

That's a low quack. Will probably go that route. He explained why he tunes that way quite well, sold me. Now to get my two hand tapping and bass slapping down. Won't happen. That guys an alien.

If you want an alien for technique, the whole Dream Theater band members are all aliens. Theyre technique is too perfect that it just cant be human.

Agreed. Have you seen petruccis rock discipline vid? Dude looks half stoned/asleep and can still do shit in warm up excercises that make me scratch my head.

That's about the truth. Sell the guitar or launch it through the screen. Now for excercise 3 we are going to do a 10 fret stretch. No we're not. No one can. Oh well, he is a good teacher though. Way better than malmsteen. That dude 'slows town's to 1000bpm. Swedish alien.

I built an IB 7 last year. I was honestly surprised at the quality of the pups. I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you're looking at driling out an extra cavity for a battery to use with actives.

As far as these ones go, both are very high output pups. Just as loud as some of the active guitars I have at home, which was surprising. Tone wise, they are quite warm, they sound great on the lower end of the guitar, but there is a slight loss of clarity in the highs. The only other gripe with them was the large sound to noise ratio, but I suspect that is my fault, because I left the guitar unsheilded, and he earth wire is to this day not soldered properly to the bridge.

As long as you do the correct tinning, seilding, and wiring, these pups sound great fr n extra cost. I have my guitar set up with an 8 string set, tuned to E B E A D G C, and its sounds amazing.

If I were you, I'd immediately replace the strings if you wish to tune lower than a B on the fat string. The stock strings that the kit comes with are frankly horrible.

Hope this helps.

Thanks mate. For this build I've got dimarzio blaze going in to both spots and tuning will be kept standard. For the custom hardbtail baritone that's getting the 8 string treatment and either an aftermath set or something similar.
