Hey guys. I want to order an ib7 kit with a cap something like the picture. Doesn't need to be exactly this but was just wondering what you thought would get me in the ball park. Cheers.

Total guess, but that could be burled walnut.

Maybe a quilted maple top dyed black, lightly sanded back and then dyed red would get close to this.

Thanks mate. As far as stains go, I've heard feast Watson's gear goes alright. Was thinking Japan brown for back and sides and the neck, Japan black for the grain but unsure what red to go for.

I have a Dean bass like that, it's quilted maple on the cap. As someone else said, you can stain it dark, sand it off, then color finish to really make that quilt pop..It's nice and stable, unlike Spalted maple, which sometimes has soft areas in the 'spalt".

If Im not mistaken, thats MCG's wet and dry sanding tutorial and that isnt actually a cap. Thats a paint job. One heck of a good one too. He has a vid on how to marble paint like that. He does it on a 6 string bass in the vid.

I'd be very interested Eshays if you can find the video on the technique if that top is painted and not a cap.
Andrew, might be worth doing some research to find a veneer supplier to glue onto the IB7 cap, a quilted maple or some sort of burl should give you this effect.

Yeah that's the vid. Adam can do a custom order for the quilted top so will go that route.

Can you reccomend a good stain brand dingo? Will dingotone be ready in a few months as I'm guessing that's how long it takes for a custom order to be shipped.

Andrew, I think Dingotone is hoping to be on sale August or by September.
I've used about 6 or 7 FW prooftint colours and had great success with it, and the price is very reasonable.

Heres the link. Its not as great a marble, cos its single coloured, unlike the black and red marble in the other vid, which he admitted was one of his best finished results. But the painting technique is still the same.

Andrew, at this stage it looks like Dingotone will be ready to roll late August.

thanks Eshays, cool video, there's not much information about the technique but the finished product is amazing

Thanks guys. That vid is great. I still wonder how he did the red guitar. Is it solid red then black marble effect or vice versa.

And dingo, thanks for the heads up. Adam said the order should be with me by November so plenty of time to talk finish options. Do you have any samples of colours?
