Hey Guys, the low E string on my LP has recently been giving me some trouble....

the neck has had a proper setup and everything tuned up ok. The open E, harmonic on 12th fret and fretted at 12th fret all sing from the same book so obviously the intonation is good but when I fret it the notes are almost half a step sharp??

I thought the neck could have been crocked or the frets off or something but it all lines up and when I first strung it up it played fine and it's only the low E, none of the other strings are out of tune..... the only thing I can think of is that it's just a dud string?

any thoughts?

Your nut is too high. If you paid someone to set it up for you, take it back.

Aw beauty, thanks for the quick reply mate.

I had a neck setup and bone nut done by the Pitbull resident Luthier....

Oh, before it was put together? Yeah, that slot just needs to come down some. :)

sounds like the problem Mick. You can use an old E string like dental floss to lower the slot. Only take off small amounts of bone and test it before you go too far

Yep. Sounds like the culprit to me, too. And wound strings do indeed make a great nut file. But try to keep it straight.

Cheers lads! could be a good excuse to buy some nut files as well :D
