View Full Version : Neck through Bassy goodness

dingobass

Well, it has been a rather crappy week, some not so good things happened in Dingo world so rather than risk stuffing up important jobs I thought I would build a neck through Bass.

Here are a few pics of progress so far

Timbers used are Iroko wings, Tassie Blackwood, Rock Maple and Makore laminate neck

That's a hot looking mix you've put together, DB. Really like the look of the headstock! Never heard of makore and iroko. Where do they come from? Are they hard/soft?

dingobass
17-05-2014, 08:36 AM
Thanx Lawry.
Iroko and Makore both come from Africa.
The Iroko is a hardwood and the Makore is a type of Mahogany

Innovative design and sweet woods.
The left side looks Tele & the right looks Strat . . . are you gunna title it TELSTRA?
Maybe not - this baby is to good for that dubious title.

Where abouts do you go to get this exotic stuff, DB? I've never even heard of it, never mind buy it.

dingobass

Lawry, over East there is one place in Brisvegas I know of. Lazarides stock some very yummy exotic timbers.

lawry
18-05-2014, 06:46 AM
Hey DB. I had a look at the Lazarides Timbers web page and those guys have so much stuff! And their gallery has links to some beautiful artwork-like items. But what I really liked is that you can filter their timbers by application, including musical instruments. That's cool!

looking a treat DB, well done, I'll see this beasty on Sunday. Last time I was at your man cave these were chunks of timber

dingobass
22-05-2014, 07:16 AM
Alrighty then..
Time for a mock up to make sure everything works before the final finessing (slotting saddles, cleaning saddle slots, logo, finish moulding the bridge, sanding, sanding, sanding and more sanding etc etc)

Was going to use a bone bridge but decided to go a bit more left field and use individual chunks of Mother of Pearl instead.
Nearly drove myself insane doing it but it works 8-)

Plugged her in and she sounds sweet :P

Can't wait to see the beast Sunday !

dingobass

Yes DB I will be putting flowmeters on the beer pipeline and making sure the volume that leaves the kegs is the same as what the naughty room members consume. I suspect you have put a sly pipe tee that plumbs beer into your man cave !

Hmmm. This reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy regarding the planet Bethselamin where...

"the net balance between the amount you eat and the amount you excrete while on the planet is surgically removed
from your body weight when you leave; so every time you got to the lavatory there, it is vitally important to get a receipt."

Just swap 'planet' for 'naughty room'.

Gav, what can I say other than perfection takes time.... Albeit a looooooong time.
Note to self, finish Gavs HB, DB.....

Bargie, this one is a test/ experiment of a new model and ideas so she will prolly stay in my ever growing personal collection.... Unless some one gets that glazed look in their eyes and pulls out the wallet and waves cash under my nose :)

dingobass
25-05-2014, 10:26 PM
Forgot to say, Bargie, that my very first build was done with just a router, jigsaw, rasp and a few manky old chisels.
You dont need a fully equipped man cave to build, just a few tools, a couple of chunks of tree and a bucket load of patience.
The rest just follows on.

Yeah I'd be holding on to it too, it's a major thing of beauty. I'm hearin' ya regarding the tools and definitely gonna have a go at a scratch build in the near future. Now I've just got to sell another bit of gear to make it happen, unfortunately I've gone from a rich shearer to a poor stay at home Dad so the missus could go back to work, ideal for building guitars though I guess...

I shore for 13 years and it's a thankless job designed to destroy a man. Money's awesome, you get to see the world and meet great people but otherwise it sucks.

Cheers Bargie, I very carefully marked out the shape, drilled holes close to the inside corners and then cut it out with my trusty scroll saw..
Then very gently rasped it clean and shaped the outside edges, followed by sanding, sanding etc etc :)

Was not at all fond of that big ugly black pup just sitting there....

Time to make a cover 8-)

First step is to drum sand an offcut to thickness. To do this I double sided stickytaped the offcut onto a flat chunk of ply.
http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/3y2f1-IMG_2819.JPG
Once I had one side flat I carefully slid a spatula under the cover to get it off the board.
Then flip it over and repeat the process.

Come on guy's , do you really think DB would part with this !
It seriously is dam hot though and I cant imagine any Bass play not drooling over it. The bridge is just something else , simple and sexy and works. It's that touch of class that every one should inspire too.
Fantastic to finally meet you DB

Hey DB, what happened to all the pics you posted in this thread?, I can't see them at all....weird.

Nor me. The links are still there but not showing, even when accessed directly. Has someone cleared out 'old' photos to make storage room for new ones?

Same here too, I can see the links when I go to reply to DB's posts but the pics don't show up in the thread, very odd....hmmmmm.....
