I bet you know of a few bands or musicians that, for whatever reason, you adore and noone else you know gives a stuff about. I know I do. Let's share shall we, and together maybe discover some new music that blows our tiny little minds (disclaimer: I'm sure not all of you have tiny little minds). :D

My contribution, Oysterhead. A group comprised of Les Claypool (Primus), Stuart Copeland (the Police) and Trey Anastasio (Phish). All monsters in their own right.

WTF is with that guitar?

Yes I've heard some Oysterhead tracks Pabs and like them. Les Claypool is a magician on bass. That guitar looks like a deer horn is sticking out the back, very out there Trey !

Yeah, moose horn or roots because the luthier couldn't be bothered waiting for the wood to dry!

Cardiacs - They are definitely an acquired taste, but they were a major influence on Faith No More, Porcupine Tree, Blur and lots of other bands.

(They are also the prime reason I am considering a SG for my next build)

I could very quickly hog this whole thread as I seem to be drawn to music that is outside the mainstream.

@Fretworn, the Cardiacs are awesome, I'll definitely have to check out more of their stuff.
@Brendan, great clip. Rev Peyton is a little terrifying though.

Was just talking to Wokka about these guys. The Pillows, a Japanese pop punk band. Not really my style of music, but I adore these guys. Wish I knew what the hell they were singing about.

For me there are two bands that seem to be little known, that also have a few links to each other.

The first is a band called Firebird. Formed by former Carcass guitarist Bill Steer they were active from 1999 to 2012 when they called it a day. They were a three piece power rock trio with a classic sound often compared to bands like Cream. Hard to choose a favourite firebird song, but this one is pretty cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilSGPUaubTk

The other is a band that still exists called Spiritual Beggars from Sweden. They were formed by Michael Amott (former Carcass Guitarist and current Guitarist in Arch Enemy). The Beggars are a sort of side project band, but continue to be quite active. Their use of keyboards gives them a classic 70s sound but a lot of their stuff is a bit heavier (often described as Stoner metal).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSNMYNpxXIo
The thing I like most about both of these bands is that they make music in a style that not many do nowadays and they do it well.

Distributed on independent labels, they haven't had as much attention as I think they deserve (and buying their CDs can sometimes be so hard that I have officially declared any day I obtain one of their CDs to be an Auspicious day:) ).

Other than the founders of each band originating from Carcass, they have shared a drummer who also did double duty in Grand Magus with one of the singers in the Beggars (JB). Busy bunch of musos.

Cheers

Wow, lots of cool bands you guys have just introduced me to. Thanks.

One of my favourite bands no one knows about is Man Man out of Philidelphia. Amazing musicians making what I would call alternative pop.
Honus Honus the singer has a voice that really grows on you.

http://youtu.be/qEEuFGUvsGY

Another unknown is Jack Pearson, a phenomenal blues/ jazz guitarist. He has played with the Allman Brothers, and countless other big names. You have probably heard his playing on a record and not known it was him.

And what does one of the worlds premier guitarist play, a stock standard Squire.

First of all, @Analyst69, when I read Carcass, I was expecting both of those bands to be a lot heavier. Nice.
@DanMade, Man Man are fantastic, another one to add to the 'listen to this' pile. Thanks!

Okay, next up the incredible Jolly. A fiercely independent band, all their recordings, production and film clips are done in the drummers basement. During hurricane Sandy, that basement was flooded and they lost almost all of their equipment. Amazingly, they bounced back for a full European tour and album release within six months. I admire their tenacity as much as I love their music.

Haven't listened to Ozric Tentacles for a while. I used to have a cd with a bunch of downloads that a friend in the US sent me, I don't know where it's gotten to. (The cd also had the Wildhearts on it, now that's a combination)

There has been a bit of a revival of sludge/doom/stoner rock (whatever you want to call it) in the last few years. I for one am glad. I love some hard yelling, droney rock n roll.

Baroness toured earlier in the year (part of Soundwave, I think). The did a side gig in Sydney supporting one of the other acts. I know some guys who went to the gig.

That Part Chimp song is quite cool @adam. started out a bit wtf, but as the song progressed it became infectious (for me anyway...now I want to to listen to it again).

Those other Red Fang songs are cool @MetalMatt, and they are good at making cool clips.

Another in the Sludge/Stoner vein is Sleep. This song goes for over an hour though (apparently their record company were none-to-happy about it when the presented it for their new album). Hard to find the time to dedicate to listening to this song, but maybe this is worth putting on while sanding a kit :)

Stone Giants. Their lead guitarist is an amazingly versatile and generally great player, but no one seems to know them.

Some really great stuff here! I love all that stoner rock/sludge type stuff too. I'm a big fan of Sleep and High On Fire too.
Any 'Electric Wizard' fans here? Very Sabbath inspired, thick and heavy.

Thanks for posting Dopesmoker, Darren, it's been ages since I listened to that. Had to delete it off my mp3 player because shuffle decided to put it on way too much. Great song for a sanding session.

Thank You Scientist - what Maroon 5 would sound like if they employed Jean-Luc Ponty and the Brecker Brothers, and then got Frank Zappa to arrange their songs.

@Fretworn, I am in love! So right up my alley. Kinda like a more modern version of Mr Bungle. Great horns.

Thanks Tim!.. I have an album of theirs but never really got into it. But watching the Video along with it completely changes the whole experience. Much better with the Video.

No worries, leetbrown, I totally agree.

I have a deep appreciation for the work these guys have done to to essentially rewrite the soundtrack for those clips.

Got myself introduced to Charles Bradley on the weekend. What a voice! Sounds like the love child of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.

Sends shivers right up the spine.

The backing band in that clip is also amazing. The Menahan Street Band. Love their instrumental stuff.
