I have had a composite Tele body hanging around for a while so I thought it might be time to build a neck for her.

Kinda over making the same ole flat headstock profile f type necks so I thought to myself what can I do that is a little different?
Off to the timber stack I go...

After rummaging around I found a length of 'Hog that looked a bit lonely... it was a reject chunck because of a rather nasty knot hole in exactly the wrong place for it to be used as a body but there was more than enough to make a neck. Oh happy joy biscuits :)

So I marked out the profile and routed for the truss rod.

Then I stood there staring at it and scratching my bitz wondering what to do next.
It dawned on me that I could cut a swept back headstock out of the chunk so I marked her up and attacked it with the Bandosaurus...

Next I grabbed my trusty template, screwed it down and cut the neck out and then profiled it with a bearing guided router bit.

Then on with the Tassie Blackwood finger board, dress that up and a trial fit... PERFECT!

Next step, drink Bourbon...

Awesome stuff DB.
I'm just about to start a neck with a headstock angle like this, so it's great to see your processes.

might have to start a scratch build just to have a DB custom neck like this!

nice work DB, I recognise that neck template ! That's how we cut our CBG headstocks with a fall, looks better than a flat headstock. Look forward to seeing this progress !
So what was your poison, American Honey ?

More progress on the neck..

Shaped neck and headstock, routed for bindings, profiled fretboard....

Your guitars are beautifully organic DB, all your edges are soft and flowing. Looks like that will be a vert comfortable neck.

Thanx Dan :)

Guitars should have beautiful soft flowing lines that you want to caress, just like a Woman.

Thanx Matt and Bman :)

The deafening silence from Adam on this build is starting to really worry me... I have a gut feeling that once this Guitar is put together I am going to get a visit from the TAS.......

Looks like I'd be upgrading security in the man cave with the amount of interest in this axe !

Hey Phil, I know you have to sell guitars to make a living, but I would sure find it hard to part with some of your masterpieces, and this is looking like its going to be another.

DB, this is just the sexiest Tele I've ever seen. I think you should just whack some clear coat on it and call it a day (then drop it off at PBG HQ).

Brendan
26-04-2014, 09:52 AM
DB sell it now or move back East - only chances of keeping it out of Adam's hands. At least if you sell it, it becomes someone else's problem to protect it from Adam. BTW, fully agree with Adam's comment re:this is just the sexiest Tele I've ever seen...

What sort of wood is the fretboard - looks like very light rosewood.

Brendan
26-04-2014, 09:57 AM
BTW - what would a piece of Blackbutt that size set you back - or is this one from the DB Private Reserve and if you need to ask it's too much :D .

dingobass
26-04-2014, 10:08 AM
Brendan, too cold back East... I will just have to take my chances and upgrade the security system :)

The Fretboard is Tassie Blackwood. I gave it the thin superglue treatment so it is as hard as Ebony.

Jeepers DB, that Tele is really going to be something else.
One day it will be behind armoured glass in the Louvre.

So no fret dot markers on the fretboard ?

Awwwwww geez Guys... Thanx for all of your kind words :)

All of you are building beautiful Guitars, all of you inspire me to reach deep and improve my own work and many of you leave me shaking my head and saying to myself how I wish I could build something as beautiful as that!

I consider myself as being equal to you all, we all have our unique skill sets.
Woks is the master of the burst, Brendan is the master of the elegant and simple beauty, Jarrod is the master of the acrylic finish, Robin... well... words fail me as they do for AJ's builds, Maxie is the master of the left feild, whacky but amazing build........

I could go on, but all of you are just simply fantastic Luthiers in your own right, and I am deeply honoured to have had the oppourtunity to see your builds and to call some of you my personal freinds.

Hey DB. Really love the MOP inlay and that binding around the neck.
And speaking of inlays... d'ya reckon you could post a little 'how to inlay for dummies' thread? Now, I don't have a router but I have got a dremel so if it can be done with that I would love to know how it's done.
