wow Explorer that looks like a classic, love the mods you have done to move the switch and the white pickguard looks great on satin black. The only negative I can see is its such a shame to cover an ash body, you should have used a basswood kit !

Thanks for your comments wokkaboy,
I agree it is a classic look which was what I was after, when I ordered the guitar all that was available was the ash and I has this in my mind to start with.
And to be honest there were some odd aspects to the grain in the timber I didn't warm too.
I have a plant to do another to show off the grain.

However, am I missing something here? The pics I see of the pick guard are the standard three ply, sans Logo..

Yeah, that is a bit odd about the 'guard.

Anyway, speaking as a fan of satin black, this guitar really does more than justice to it.
Great build and a hot chance for GOTM IMO.

Well "Jenny" my JBA-4 Jazz Bass is finally finished :) I left everything as stock apart from adding copper foil shielding under the pickguard and in the cavities and my own custom decal design. I'll eventually change the strings to flatwounds (string squeak annoys me) and might switch to a black plastic knob set

Body and headstock (front) finish: Orange Shellac with a few coats of Carnauba wax polish
Neck and headstock (back/sides) finish: Tru-Oil - thinner & steel-wooled on the working area, gloss on the ends

A few more photos that I managed to get in the sunlight this morning before the clouds rolled in.
The headstock holes looked pretty evenly spaced but come mounting the tuners there is obviously some variation - no big deal.

quiet1_au
19-04-2014, 12:01 AM
Maybe - gotta learn to play it first! ;-) Was very happy with the grain, it's exactly what I hoped it would do and why I was keen to avoid stains, etc. sticking with natural and transparency. Shellac's a bit of a tricky finish to use though, very much a crash-course in using it for me (put it's not too hard to recover from stuff-ups and try it again... and again... :-P)

Looking great John - gotta love the JB's... Picked up my placky knobs of eBay for a couple of dollars delivered. Downside is that saving time costs money, so they took their sweet time getting here... Tempted to go a JBA-4 with some pupgrades as well - the wife has said she likes my JB-4, but with a white and not blue pickguard. Figured the easy way to keep us both happy is to get one of each... :)

Thanks Gav, it was yours and Andy's Juniors that inspired me to make mine. Let's be honest, who would make a Junior kit when big brother LP is available. But after seeing yours I thought, how beautiful, I gotta have one of those.

I find that my latest guitar is always my "go to" guitar. And the Jr is no exception. I love playing it, and with the cuts I put in it, it is the most comfortable guitar that I have. I love it.

The only "outings" it will get will be when I play it at church. It will be interesting to see how I can tame it, and soften it, for the soft stuff, but it will rock when the overdrive is unleashed, can't wait.

Cheers mate

This is my entry for GOTM May, STA-1 ash body. Body finished in jarrah stain and burning sun burst. Neck finished in burning sun. Camphor veneer glued to headstock and finished in the same burst colours as the body.
Upgrades are as below:
black HSH pickguard
black tremelo cover
gold bridge, jack plate, neck plate, tuners, string trees, whammy bar, strap pins

It plays and sounds pretty good, happy with the results. This is a build I finished couple of months ago, I've got a backlog of entries for GOTM

Hi all,

Well I finally got my truss rod cover and a sunny day for pictures so I am finally entering my Dream Catcher LP 1.

This is my first build and I decided to keep everything stock to see how it sounds.

I painted the back and sides in metallic blue acrylic spray paint and I used acrylic artist ink to do the burst on the front. I chose turquoise and aqua marine blue for the burst with some black to accentuate the grain.

I even attempted making my own waterslide decals for the headstock. I had a blast with this build. Such a satisfying experience.

Enjoy, I know I am :D

And the Winner is...

Thank you to our Esteemed Judging Panel, all eight entrants and everyone who provided feedback on these eight awesome builds.

Everyone agrees, this competition just gets tougher ever month and this month there were 8 entries that you could argue were all equally as good. In the end, it comes down to the judges getting very picky and going with their gut on which one they would most like to steal and take home.

First up, special mention to Stevieraywannabe's LP-1, which missed out on 3rd place by a fraction of a point. I believe this was our first international entry. Well done Stevie.

And to the other four entrants, no shame, this was the first time we had to go to decimal voting to determine winners. There was not much air between 1st and 8th.

Ok, in third place:

Macool's ES-1GT

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/by6r1-image.jpg

"Beautiful! I really love the custom touches... beautifully done!"

"An elegant twist on an established classic- the hardware perfectly complementing the rich finish. The customised scratchplate is just the cherry on the cake. Tres cool."

"So elegant, understated and absolutely desirable."

In second place:

Robin's JR-1DC

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/2fk71-007-4.JPG

"Ooh, shiny! Lovely finish that perfectly complements the lovely colour choice."

"This guitar looks delicious and wet, two of my favourite things..."

"Whats not to like about this Guitar?
Once again, Robin has done an outstanding job... They just keep getting better!
The depth of the finish on this Guitar gives the feeling that you could dive in and go for a swim!"

"Robin continues to build the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen."

And...

In first place...

for May 2014...

It's...

Wokka's STA-1M

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/e8861-front.jpg

"Excellent burst. You really have nailed the whole bursting thing here."

"Every time I look at this guitar I stare straight at the glow next to the bridge and then my eye flows to the rest, just like a great piece of art should do and it's also classy."

"Oh My Good Lord. I thought this was a Valley Arts guitar on first glance. Wokka has outdone himself with this glorious instrument. I hereby crown him The Sunburst King. This is my beeline entry- you'd have a hard job getting me to give this one back."

"It's been such a joy watching Wokka and his 4D Guitars partner in crime, Wayne, go from building cigar box guitars to producing something as professional as this awesome Strat. Who wouldn't be drawn to this classic."

Well done Wokka, good to see you back on the winner's podium again.

Thanks everyone for entering and commenting... bring on GOTM June 2014!

Thanks to the judging panel and all the great feedback. As the month went on and seeing the quality of all the builds I thought my ES wasn't in the same class. So happy to make the podium. I built this guitar to honour my Dad who played an F hole 50s Maton Alver all his life, which ended just before Christmas. Thanks for helping me honour him.

cheers everyone, I'm totally shocked my entry won with the level of standard of entries that keeps rising each month.
Thanks again to the judges for another tough month of judging, you may need 2 decimal points soon to choose a winner.
I'll be happy to sit back and be judge for June GOTM although I have 2 entries gathering dust.
Well done everyone else's entry was more than worthy of a win.
Congrats to Robin and Macool for runner ups.
Back to the workshop for more work !

Wow. I can't believe I just missed third spot. Way more than I was expecting for my first build. Thanks all.

Congrats Wokka. That strat is AMAZING. Love the burst. These builds are always very inspiring.

Robin, that JR-1dc is a beautiful work of art. I can't believe the gloss you got on that.

Macool, I love the orange on your ES-1GT. Absolutely gorgeous.

Cheers,
Brian

Congrats Warren, I feel no shame in coming second place to that beauty.

Congrats Macool. Your Dad would be proud to know that his son could make such a beautiful "Tribute" guitar. I hope that you find comfort is knowing that you did your Dad proud.

And congrats to all the other GOTM entrants. There are no losers in this competition. Every guitar is special and could grace the pages of any "Beautiful Guitar" Thread on any other Forum.

Thanks judges.

Cheers

thanks Everyone for the nice comments everyone. I agree with Robin every entry are amazing builds and there are no losers.
DB I think Andyport has won 4 GOTMs and Pablo at least 3 ?

pablopepper
06-05-2014, 04:21 AM
How many is that for you Wokka? Must be at least 4. From memory Andyport is on 3 (cherryburst LP, red ES and paisley JM, someone correct me if I'm wrong). I've got 3, but one was uncontested so it doesn't really count.

wokkaboy
06-05-2014, 04:42 AM
@ Pablo this is my third GOTM. Andyport has won 4 GOTM awards, the 3 you listed above and the JR-1DC.
So as far as I know Andyport still has the most awards.

pablopepper

Dang it, I did forget one, sorry Andy. In that case, I believe you're correct. Andyport is the man.

well done Wokks and all the other entrants, well that was my best effort on another guitar that had hundreds of dollars thrown on it to make it the perfect tele and still couldn't make the podium. Time to give in me thinks lol....

wokkaboy
06-05-2014, 09:25 AM
cheers Jarrod, your tele was well worthy of a podium but unfortunately can't fit 7 or 8 people on the podium. Sure you will have something nice to enter June GOTM !

A great effort by all the entrants, and almost as big a one by the judging team!

I have no idea how they chose between macool, robin and Wokka - these are all great builds, you should all be proud

Thanks for the crown Wokka...you wouldn't be far off now?
Just started my first paid build, a Strat, natural timber (maybe a light stain) with a purple burst.
Also about to get an Explorer underway, classic black with white pickguard, also a clients build.
Don't think I will enter either of these two though, so it could be a while before I have anything else to enter.

wokkaboy
07-05-2014, 03:53 AM
I'm one behind you Andy !
Why wouldn't you enter these 2 builds, they will be eligible ?

Andyport
07-05-2014, 04:14 AM
Only one behind me...mmmm better get cracking on something soon.
And when you do equal me on 4 wins, it then goes on percentages.
Number of wins to number of builds....haha got ya there!!!!

wokkaboy
07-05-2014, 04:19 AM
haha yes Andy, you are like Marc Marquez in the motoGP has won 4 races from 4 races, you have won 4 GOTMs from 4 entries, no one will ever match those stats !

I feel like I'm watching the 'Andy and Woks' show. Not that I mind. They are spectacular guitars. And I say that without taking anything away from all the entrants.
