So, i had a heap of off cuts and spare bits of tree hanging around...
What to do with them?

Build a homage to the Rickenbacker 4001, of course!

Cool DB. Looks great. Can you get genuine parts ?

dingobass
29-03-2014, 09:36 AM
Thanx Woks.

This one will have a Schaller roller bridge and a set of Tonerider Jazzies on board with just a volume control.. just to be different :)

Next time I go to my timber yard I will get me some Tassie Blackwood and build a proper neck through.
I have a good mate in the States that is happy to get me genuine pups and hardware for the next one.

The world is a better place because of Rickies, I reckon. If you build this as a lefty DB I may have to learn how to be ambidextrous. Is there room in the PBG community for a Rickynapper?

Ricky with Jazz bass pickups, kind of like the bass Ed Roman built for Dave Meros from Spocks Beard.

Beautiful bit of pocketing there, DB and the rollers add a nice touch. A solid chunk of metal like that should help give some serious sustain.

Awesome build DB. Very, very jealous of this one! So wish I had the skills...

cheers,

looking good DB, also good to see you weren't working on a dry sump !
What stain colour you got planned for this bad boy ?

dingobass
01-04-2014, 04:53 AM
Thanx Guys.
Lawry, I love the Schaller bridges... They do give a great sustain boost to any Bass or Guitar.

Gav, all you need are the right toys, err, tools and accurate templates and away ya go :)

Woks, I knew you would spot the beer... I put that in just for you Buddy ;)

When that pic of the body in colour came up on my screen it literally took my breath away.

So it's a fretless too ay. Careful now, you might pull me over to the darkside of the bass players with gems like this one.

wow DB great progress since the weekend, love the shape, colour and inlays, looking forward to seeing this beast progress. Does that round edge on the top of the neck above the heel fit in with the pickguard ?
Oh and thanks for the get out of the naughty room free card, I might use that very soon !

dingobass
03-04-2014, 10:29 AM
Cheers guys,
Woks, the cresting wave shape on the fingerboard was just a flight of fancy on my behalf...
Thought it balanced out the headstock rather nicely... (Sure hope Rickenbacker don't see it and steal my idea) :)
As for the get out of the naughty room for free card, you almost needed it tonight.... Have you ever seen me put a timber hider.... Errrm... Pick guard on a build yet? :P

pablopepper

Hehe. Love how you think DB. I haven't played a fretted bass for years and I don't think I could ever go back.
I love the way the neck is looking, and the markers. What are you going to use on the fingerboard to toughen it up? Or am I jumping the gun too much here ;-)

dingobass
03-04-2014, 11:30 AM
Thanx Lawry,

Still undecided as to what finish to put on the fingerboard...
The Rock Maple is plenty hard enough, especially as I only use flat wound strings so I may stain and wax it.
If I don't stain I will flood it with thin superglue, this makes it hard as!

Brendan
03-04-2014, 11:38 AM
Part of me was wanting this to be an April fools - it's looking amazing - loving the surf curl at the base of the fretboard. But now I'm going to be wanting something just like it... What sort of wood is that?

dingobass
03-04-2014, 12:12 PM
The body is Fiji'Hog, Brendan..as stocked by Pit Bull ;)

wokkaboy
04-04-2014, 01:33 AM
oh DB, sorry for suggesting you would use a pickguard, I was assuming a Ricky 4001 bass has a pickguard but wasn't thinking straight !

dingobass
04-04-2014, 05:12 AM
Hahaha! You are forgiven Woks.
Normally the 4001 does have a p...p... you know what, so your assumption is accepted as an honest mistake :)

You can hang onto your get out of the naughty room card a while longer..

wokkaboy
04-04-2014, 05:45 AM
awesome thanks DB, I'll be using the card to get out next time we run out of beer in the naughty room !

lawry
04-04-2014, 06:29 AM
Why don't you just buy a brew kit for the naughty corner? Problem solved. You may end up having to knock people back from wanting to get in.

wokkaboy
04-04-2014, 06:37 AM
haha great idea Lozza, your'e right it may get too busy if we got a surplus of beer, so we better keep a lid on it, pardon the pun ! If the naughty room gets expanded we may be able to set up a small micro brewery with a keg filler, save on filling bottles !

lawry
04-04-2014, 06:52 AM
Ya reckon I could start a 'naughty' franchise in Nth Qld?

wokkaboy
04-04-2014, 07:03 AM
maybe Lozza, you would have to consult with the naughty master DB. You would need someone to manage the people in the naughty room and how far to the nearest Pit Bull builder to you Loz ?

Gavin1393
04-04-2014, 07:30 AM
Woks, Lozza, quiet as you can...come give us a hand with getting this inside before DB finds out...

Hmmm. If the 'apparatus' gets installed you will definitely need more room. Or a roster :-)

@DB those colours are pretty intense. I'm keen to see this intriguing new secret product you've been alluding to for the last day or so. I'm also curious on what your wiring scheme is going to be. With only one hole in the body for a pot I don't think you're going to offer much of a challenge to Weirdy.

dingobass
04-04-2014, 10:55 AM
Hehehehehe... the roster is being drawn up by the master of the spreadsheet, our Brendan :)

The colours are rather intense, I have to wear the Raybans when I apply them ;)

Very simple wiring for this bad boy, just a blend pot.... even a wiring numpty like me should be able to pull that off without calling on the Uber Legend of Wiring....

jarrod
04-04-2014, 11:24 AM
on a serious note , maybe a mezzanine floor in the naughty room (double the floor area !)

dingobass
04-04-2014, 11:46 AM
Stairs might not be a good idea with the high consumption of beer that has been going on in the naughty room.....
Looking into leasing a warehouse to ease the over crowding issues before Work Safe pay me a visit..

On a brighter note, I am currently working on getting a pipeline installed from Little Creatures Brewery to ensure we never run out of beer :)

wokkaboy
05-04-2014, 03:01 AM
wow I haven't seen this post for a day and now the naughty room has a mini microbrewery, DB, Ads and possibly a future pipeline of little creatures, I got no need to leave now !
Ricci is looking sweet too DB !

Time to re visit the Riccky...

I have had a Piezo Bass bridge lurking around for ages so I decided to throw it on board just for a laugh :)

You can see my highly accurate method of ensuring I get the bridge set in the correct place :P

Bridge installed, extra output drilled and wiring.....

the sound?

Almost acoustic, only down side is running two leads, one to passive and one to active but I will make up a composite lead..... one day...
Oh, and a kill switch for the Piezo might not go astray either :)
