Hi all,
I started this build about 2 weeks ago and finally got around to starting a build diary.
1st photo is after sanding and wet tagged with a pearloid white pick guard to see how it looks.
2nd photo got a camphor veneer glued to the headstock and shaped it.

got first clear coat on Saturday and the 4D logo kindly made by Andyport, cheers for that, really happy how it turned out, the logo has been cut from vinyl, the 4D logo is a bit lighter red than usual but its growing on me.

here's some shots from Waynes phone after 3rd clear coat the colours look more red on this iphone. Couldn't resist in the late arvo direct sunlight shines on the right workbench vice.

Man Wokka, this is a sweet tobacco burst - you've totally nailed it! What kinds/colours of stains did you use for this one? I love it.

cheers,
Gav.

@ Gav --> yes pretty happy with the results, the more bursts you do the better you get. The colours are Feast Watson jarrah stain and burning sun, can't go wrong with that colour combo

Thanks man. Gonna have to check them out. Your results speak for themselves!!

cheers,
Gav.

cheers Gav, I want to get some more Feast Watson colours, they are about $20 for a 250ml can so you get lots of builds out of a can. I won't tell DB which big green shed I got them from ! haha
Here's the link, I use the proof tint range, there's a colour chart link

Awesome - thanks for the link. Jarrah looks pretty red on the web page. Did you use that for the tobacco sides??

cheers,
Gav.

such a nice burst wokka, is the veneer thin enough that it simply bends at the nut end of the head stock?

wokkaboy
25-03-2014, 03:38 AM
@ Gav --> yes the sides are jarrah stain, I've really heaped it on heavy thats why it looks much darker than the webpage pictures. if you gave it a light coat you could achieve a more dark red colour
@ Stan --> cheers for the comments. The veneer is about 2.5mm thick but I've sanded it a bit thinner where it curves near the nut and soaked that end of the veneer in water for about half hour before I glued it softens the wood and makes it bend easier. Then fit about 7 clamps over it and far too much titebond glue so it stays glued !

looks amazing Wokka you've really perfected the art of the burst! Do you just apply your layers with a rag?

wokkaboy
25-03-2014, 09:00 AM
@ Tim --> cheers mate, yes I have a separate rag for each colour and a blending rag. I cheat a bit and use a colour reducer (from Feast Watson) and this makes blending the colours much easier

Nice! I spotted a paler tobacco burst finish online and wondered if I might be able to do it with only different layers of shellac (but wiser decided not to go down that path I think...) I looked into those off-the shelf stains and was tempted by them - especially the nice rosy jarrah - but was worried they might clog and obscure the natural grain. Seeing your results I will keep them in mind for a possible future project :-)

Awesome burst Woks.

I've had some great results with the prooftint stains. They are pretty easy to work with too.

I'm jealous of your blue SG in your other thread. That's going to look amazing.

wokkaboy
26-03-2014, 01:20 AM
cheers John and Dan, yes the prooftints are easy to work with.
John if you look at the older build diaries Robin build a STA-1 kit (ash) with a black stain and the grain was still clearly visible, so you can go as dark as you like with the colours.
Yes Dan can't wait to get more clear coats on the blue SG

Got the tobacco burst axe finished yesterday, pretty happy how it turned out. Still getting used to the contrast of the maple fingerboard. Put gold hardware on and a loaded black pickguard, I'll upgrade to some nice toneriders soon.
Plays really well with no setup yet

back shot and headstock, very happy with Andyports vinyl logo.
Do I get bonus points for the Pit Bull sticker ?
I'll enter this for May or June GOTM.
Also need to order a gold neck plate and screws.

Beautiful Wokka, just beautiful. This is one of the best looking strat builds I've ever seen. I wasn't a fan of the tobacco burst until now. As it stands, now I have to definitely build one of these. Great work!

cheers,
Gav.

Looking sweet woks. Just needs a S.R.V sticker on the pickgaurd and and a Custom sticker behind the bridge.

The burst came out a treat. Might have to try a burst like this one day.

cheers Dan, yer I didn't plan to make it look like an SRV axe.
Sure you would do a good burst, worth a try for sure.

Another stunner Wokka. Been meaning to ask, where did the 4D come from?

wokkaboy

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.
@Lozza. 4D is the 4th dimension which is the sound of the guitars haha

Hi Warren,

I noticed that by the time it got to GOTM (congrats by the way) you went with a HSH pickup arrangement.

Can I ask what pickups did you use and how did you wire them up?

I am struggling with making a decision with my next build lol.

Cheers

thanks for the nice comments fellas.
@ Robin this is not my May GOTM entry, but a similar looking tobacco burst with a maple neck. The STA-1 I entered just has an ebay loaded HSH pickguard so not sure what brand they are. They sound pretty good but I may upgrade the pups down the track

robin

Lol Warren, I didn't notice the maple fretboard. You sure have got that burst down to a fine art. Very nice mate.

And as far as the pickups go - you are no help whatsoever!!!! ;)

Cheers mate

haha no worries Robin, as suggested in the other thread of H-S-H suggestions have you had a search on ebay maybe they sell a H-S-H set of pups that may work out cheaper, hopefully a name brand of pups

Looks hella cool Wokka, I'm a real fan of those dark bursts. I'm digging that veneer on the headstock too, superb touch!
