Is GOTM becoming Andyport guitar of the month?
A bit like when the Melbourne Cup became the Bart Cummings cup for a few years. ;-)

Either way, Andy wins in some form haha

No entry from me this month guys....so it's open slather....go for it!!

@Gavin: I don't think doing a decal constitutes as a win.....or does it? ;)

@Lawry: Don't know about the Andyport GOTM, but Makybe Diva was owned by a Port Lincoln resident, and she certainly had a stranglehold on The Cup. Hence the bloody great bronze statue of her that adorns our foreshore. Think I recall someone on this forum referring to us GOTM regulars as Divas.
How ironic. :D :D

Wannabe Divas most likely.

OK. I know that I'll have to battle the Stratopester but someone has to :?
Here's my entry, the Dirty Angel IB6-S (FL).
The front is finished in Burning Sun and the back in Hot Auburn with a satin finish.
The neck is just clear top coat.

Modifications are;
Fretless conversion using maple veneer for the fret lines.
A custom truss rod cover made with gold and white mother-of-pearl on rosewood depicting an intertwined bass and treble clef.
A laminated maple control cavity cover.
Tone monster active electronics.
Bone nut.

This looks superb Lawry, what a great job you've done...congrats!
That headstock does it for me...the truss rod cover, the decal....just fantastic.
Real quality build.
"The Stratopester" is gonna have to be pretty darn good to beat this.
Great job Lawry.

I totally agree with Andy's comments there, a brilliant bass, looks the part with the decal and truss rod cover!

This will be fun Lozza, now to find out who else is entering this month...

Fantastic looking bass Lawry, beautifully finished.

Is it ready for its big debut on the weekend? How's your left hand and arm, a bit of pump after wrestling with the wide neck all week?

Lawry, your bass is just beautiful. You've done a fantastic job on it, and your attention to detail really shows. Pest, and who ever else enters this month, is going to have to pull out something pretty special to beat your effort. Top work dude.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I'm really happy with how it turned out, plays and sounds. And I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the interest.

@Scott. I'm a bit anxious about the gig tomorrow. Normally I play a five string fretless but this high C keeps on catching me out. My fingers expect it to be a G. In the last week I have managed to get about 10 hours of practice on it so I'm definitely going to use it tomorrow. Not much point building the beast and then sticking it in the cupboard, what? As for my left hand...it's not aching as much as it was last weekend, but I can feel it working. I'll let you know how it goes.

Totally stunning build Lozza, just shows what can be built with such a good kit. This will be a hard entry to beat !
Best of luck with the gig, sure you will play fine. I agree these 6 strings are a real workout on the hands

Scott J.
20-03-2014, 01:28 AM
LAWRY - super sweet job on the bass, something any appreciator of fine-looking instruments would be more than proud to own ... just one problem though, its got two strings too many! (6 strings is guitar territory! :D)

GAVINTURNER - you bastard! ;) ... another truly excellent build and a brilliant example of superb craftsmanship ... (up until just a minute or two ago I WAS thinking of entering my TL this month! :D )

LAWRY & GAVIN T - both truly inspiring builds that have left me sobbing in my conciliatory beer since first seeing them!

ADAM - When are we going to elevated GavinT to the "PBG Builders Hall of Fame" so he can stop entering GOTM and then give some of us "mere mortals" a chance? :D :D :D

Alrighty then..... Lawry and Gav, i am desperatly trying to come up with a reason to banish you both to the naughty room...(instant disqualification from entering GOTM).... But nope, i got nuthin!
This leaves me with only one option, to book a holiday on a desert island with no internet connection so i dont lose sleep trying to judge this months competition!

wokkaboy

Although I've been seriously considering hanging off until next month after seeing both GavinT's and Lawry's entries (both immediate winners in my books!), knowing the quality and proliferation of builds that get crafted by the PBG community, I don't think that there is ANY month when the competition wont be of the highest calibre.

... and what's the GOTM without at least one tele entered? :D

So here we go ...

Pretty much a standard TL-1AR kit with "antique white Nitro finish, Wudtone finished neck, oiled fretboard and only a couple of minor mods ...
- Bone Nut
- 3-ply scratch-plate (black-white-black)
- Felt strap-button pads
- Elixir strings
- Round "cup" jack-plate

@DB. No use going to a desert island, man. I got this in Vanuatu a few years ago. It's made out of half a coconut shell, palm wood and fishing line. So there would still be something to judge.

@Scott. I'm glad you entered the April GOTM (truly). This forum is all about building instruments and showing them off. And yours is definitely worth showing.

my entry for April GOTM, got absolutely no chance but what the hell. Its an Iceman originally was blue with southern cross stars and I had a clear coat fail so sanded it back and put azure lagoon on, didn't really like it so put dark onyx over it and now its got the glacier look going with the iceman theme.
Its by far my slowest build too !
All parts are standard, other than a bone nut. I like the black hardware goes well

Wayne used spray cans to get the effect, just takes many layers and objects to block the paint. Here's a video I took when he did a Paris at night picture using a similar technique

Hey everyone, you'll have to forgive me if I stuff this post up, it's my first time on here as well as my first time build.
Anyway this is an LP-1M "desert burst" finished using Behlen nitro spray toner/lacquer (Red Mahogany & Fruitwood)
I kept the hardware pretty standard apart from some Kluson Deluxe vintage tuners, Schaller strap locks and a Gibson style truss rod cover.
I gotta say I had an awesome time putting this axe together, it really is quite addictive and I've already got my next build planned.
I've gotta be honest I was somewhat dubious about how these things were gonna play, but after finally receiving the last piece of the puzzle today (in the form of 6 little 10mm adapter bushes for the tuners) I strung her up, did a quick setup, and WOW, not bad at all. I think I'll probably throw some Seymour Duncans in somewhere down the line but otherwise I'm pleasantly surprised (and hooked)

Hey bargeloobs, firstly, that is a sensational build. If that's your first, then I'm looking forward to seeing where you go from here.

Secondly, I had to edit your third photo, of the headstock, we cannot publish any trademarks. It's ok for you to have that brand name on your guitar for your own use, it falls under fair use, but we could be liable for trademark violation for advertising it. Hope you understand.

Nice one! Absolutely gorgeous.... Gav, Bones, Andy, i have made a group booking for a holiday to that island resort without WiFi so we can escape from the madness that judging GOTM causes. You are on ya own, Ads :)

Seriously though, for a first attempt this is sensational.

Have you considered dropping a set of Toneriders in? They sound just as good as the afore mentioned SD's and cost about a quarter of the price!

Waiting......

I'll be honest I've heard about the toneriders but never really heard them in action.
I'm just going by experience, I dropped a set of hotrodded SD's in an SG of mine and it's literally one of the best sounding guitars of owned, always willing to try out something new though, especially whilst saving a few bob.

I can second the ToneRider suggestion made by DB. I love them, use them as a standard upgrade on all my PBG guitars unless I am using Muy Grande's at 4x the price of the Tone Riders.

Bloody hell. I disappear for one day and these hot axes appear out of the ether. The quality of those guitars is astounding and watching the video of 'Paris' is mind blowing. I really admire that kind of talent. This is such a cool forum!

John - any logos of original guitar models leaves PBG liable for copyright infringement which can do heaps of damage to the whole PBG shebang. At the same time - be proud of your guitar - it's not a Gibson - its a Brendan or [insert your name here] - that is unless your name is Gibson...

Bargeloobs - beautiful finish there man. Nice job for a first 'un! BTW - welcome along...

Hey cheers Brendan, it seems like you guys have a really thriving community going on here, it's great to see.
I must say the level of craftsmanship and talent on here is outstanding, I'm not really sure if my effort measures up to these other guys but I guess you have to start somewhere.
Can't wait to start number two, I'm already shoppin' for goodies, lol.

Just another quick thing if someone could help me out. I need to get some info regarding my next build over in the General Support area, how on earth do I start a new thread?
Cheers guys.

Thanks for entering folks, we'll get the judging panel started on the tough task of picking a winner and hopefully have an announcement by Saturday.

Hey buddy. Awesome first effort, that's one slick LP.

To start anew thread, open the forum section you want to start a new thread in. In the top right hand corner you will see a icon that says new topic. Just click on that and away you go.

Folks, the scores are in...

I know we say it every time, but the standard of this comp is getting so high, judging is getting to be really difficult.

Remember, when the entries are flawless, as most of these were, the judging really comes down to personal preferences and which guitar you would most be drawn to if it were in a shop.

So, nobody should feel disheartened if their entry didn't make the podium.

Ok, first off, an honourable mention to Bargeloob's LP-1M, which came in 4th and missed the podium by half a nose. Bargeloob, you should be really proud of this build, it is simply magnificent. We should also mention that this guitar attracted the most "Likes" on Facebook.

In third place, as we said, by half a nose, is Scott's TL-1AR.

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/244yc-Finished-3.jpg

Scott, you know I had your back mate, but the judges wouldn't listen to my idea of changing the comp to TOTM and disqualifying anything not Tele shaped. Spoil sports.

"Classic Tele. Workmanship is as perfect as one would expect from Scott. Simply faultless."

"Overall a very well executed Tele style guitar. Loved the Made in Oz stamp!"

"I love this guitar. Simple = beautiful."

"This looks so sweet, Scott. Beautifully built and such an excellent colour choice, a truly classic Tele. The level of build quality you have achieved here is brilliant. Simple, but so classy."

In second place, again missing first place by the smallest possible margin, is Gavin Turner's ES-2T.

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/807xl-1.JPG

"Beautiful" (a common theme to all the judges feedback).

"This is one very attractive guitar. The flamed maple top is spectacular. Beautifully prepared and executed."

"This is truly a gorgeous guitar, Gav. You have covered all bases here, nothing has been overlooked, and the build quality looks superb. It oozes total class and sophistication."

"Stunning... If I was a Guitarist I would sooooo want this!"

Nice work Gavin!

And...

In first place...

JohnnyChronic's RC-1 really impressed the judges.

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1fc66-IMG_1391.jpg

"It's Ricci-time. This has the Wow factor for me. All the extra detail and effort to make this something special appeals to me."

"Beautifully finished - looking better than the real thing! Also love how the front of the pickguard is raised from the rest of the pickguard."

"Wow, what a beautiful job, Johnny. Looks like it’s straight off the factory floor! The sunburst, quality of finish and attention to detail is a credit to you. Such a quality build."

"Speechless. Pablopepper said it with "duuuuuuuuuuuude. Wicked RC there""

Congratulations Johnny! And thanks to all the other builders who entered.

Scott and Gav. Your guitars are gorgeous and I dip my lid to you both. But if Johnny's guitar were in a shop I went into I would get it down and play it till my fingers bled. Congratulations man! A real winner in my eyes.

I couldn't agree more with the judges on these picks, they're all exceptional builds and guitars I'd love to have hanging in my collection, just superb attention to detail, you guys blow my mind.
Having said that, now I've caught the guitar building bug and have got the first one out the way along with all the newbie teething problems that come with it I'm fired up and ready come out guns blazing with my "LP Blacktop".
Look out lads...

A big congratulations to Johnny for his flawless Ricky build. There was never a doubt in my mind as soon as I saw it. I am stoked to get 2nd place in such a fierce competition, although I did expect Lawry's bass to occupy my podium spot. All the builds were fantastic, and in my mind any of the axes could easily have come in 2nd and 3rd. Well done all!!

cheers,
Gav.

Mindbogglingly good entries and congrats to the placegetters & all entrants.
My complaint: Standard is now TF high, to the point where one needs to create a masterpiece just to be in the hunt :|

To all the other guys, your builds were exceptional, my personal favourite was Lawry's Fretless Bass...
Take a bow Lawry, you get DB's best Bass in show award! :)

Johnny and Gavin, congratulations and well-deserved kudos to both of you ... your axes are both truly worthy of all the accolades, and personally I'm super chuffed to be chosen to share the podium with both of you.

I'm also very humbled when I look at the superb competition that this month brought out - Bargeloobs, Wokka, Dieter, Lawry and Wayne, you all produced such excellent axes ... its one thing be judged good enough to go on the podium but just to be able to go up against such quality competitors is the true honour!

... I'm just seriously glad that I didn't have to judge!

Adam, you and I both know that the Tele certainly does stand apart from the crowd ... but if the rest of the world all had as good taste as us, then there's a chance (admittedly very small! :D) that it might just be that little bit boring! :D :D :D ha ha ha ... (or maybe not! :D :D :D)

Thank you judges and thanks for all the gorgeous competition, it means so much more to be chosen from the best.

Why not PP. But then we should probably do one for 2013 and include the few winners from 2012, like this magnificent specimen:

http://www.pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/GOM1_Home_200.jpg

Out very first GOTM Winner, from August 2012, built by yours truly and Bones.

I believe it currently resides in pieces in DB's "Parts Box". The paint job was cool, but otherwise, it was an absolute shocker.

Congrats to the winner, Johnny that Ricci is really superb.
Honourable mention to both Gavin and Scott, guitars that any other month could easily have taken it out.
Well done all.

Wow. Thanks DB. That means quite a lot to me. I accept your praise with gratitude.
It's a fantastic bass to gig with and it wouldn't be what it is without the help of mostly yourself, both Gavs and Wokka.

Still... I want that Ric!

congratulations Johnny, Gav and Scott, another amazing month of entrants but you guys deserved your awards.
Also big thanks to the judges for another tough month. I think if they had to judge a guitar of the year they may need councilling ! haha
As I always say the standard just keeps getting better.
Love the Jazzmaster GOTM August 2012 ! First time I've seen it.
Would it be possible Adam to have a GOTM thread with a photo of all the past winners and a brief description ?

Well done Johnny, Gav, Scott and all the other entrants. I think the judges got it right but it could have been in any order and still have been the correct decision.

Well, there goes that bar, up another notch.
