Mock build....

hmmmmm.....why bother painting this, it's perfect as it is?

Ok....it's not a mock build but thinking of being very natural in colour?

Heaps of character & potential Gav.
Any finish that lets that grain blaze through should be outstanding.
Time to add your magic touch - you are being watched.

Gav - looking fantastic! If anything, yours is showing more promise than the ersatz mock! Keen to see this one getting built!

Did it really turn up looking like that or did you go through the boxes and pick the best one?
You must be one arsey bastard.

Holy cow I wasn't planning another kit purchase for another 2 months but after seeing your kit I got to have one of these. I'd just be putting clear coats on. Stunning grain and binding. It must be one piece of Ash Gav? Think they said Ash cap on description

Gav, that kit is damn fine! I'd keep it a natural colour!

Wokka, this is a cap but the cap is about 20mm thick! This kit was the weekend special...

Drool. I was contemplating a spalted LP kit after seeing Tim's beautiful results. Now I'm torn between spalted and ash... :?

cheers,
Gav.

Gav, the Spalty is going to require a fair bit of filler but the results always look terrific. However, I just love the Ash kits. They work so well with a 'natural wood' colour finish.

Gav are you sure about the 20mm cap? To me it looked like 2 piece Ash body on the bottom, two piece basswood carved top and then a thin ash veneer. I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

I'll have another look...a third one, because I did look at it and then do a double-take in the thickness of what I perceived to be the cap. Maybe they messed up with mine and read 2mm as 20 mm"! ;)

Is it a carved top? May be it 2mm at the edge and 20mm in the middle.

Oh-oh!

Wore my glasses this time and it is clear that Adam is right. It is highly figure;d this is true but it is so thin that the cap looked like part of the 20mm thick bass wood that rests on top of the ash that makes up the back and sides. For those with a perceptive eye, you may notice something on the left just below the waist!

So Gav do the back and sides have ash veneer glued to the basswood?
Whats the white strip below the waist you are referring to ?
I was hoping these models would be one lump of ash like the strat, tele and explorer models

Wok's, because it is an arch top the back and sides are Ash, no veneer that i could tell. Cap was sanded away at the factory and hence the bass wood is showing through. The white patches! Going clear on e guitar so don't think it will matter. Really a lot of glue on this one too...have had my sanding arm in action today!

ahh yes I see! you can see the patches of basswood sand through on the left near the binding. You can also see the nice ash grain in the neck are pickup cavities indicating a solid ash 'back' behind the arch... very nice gav.

cheers,

I understand it's due to the thickness of their Ash, they can't do a solid body with a carved top. Also, the price is a major consideration, hence the basswood. Still, I think this one of the nicest looking kits in the catalogue.
