Started work on this next one. The finish is to be a deep red sunburst, Dark Onyx Outer and Carmine Gypsy Inner.

Is this the worst Wudtone job ever? Maybe... but fear not, dear reader! I will be cutting this back to leave enough to pop the grain before applying the rest of the finish.

At least, that's the plan.

Sounds great - an Essendon bass! Good luck and I hope it works out as planned - if it does - it'll be a pearler!

All the best, mate. Looking forward to following this one through!

Sanded back to 120g, grain popping reasonably well. Will now sand back to 180g then apply a coat of leftover Burning Sun base to really give it a pop. Once this is dry, I will sand back to 400g before apply the deep coat of Carmine Gypsy.

Sanded to 180g, one coat of Burning Sun base. That's more like it.

First deep coat of Carmine Gypsy. Will wait til it dries before deciding if another coat is warranted.

Also renamed the project the Crimson King, based on initial results.

The Crimson King, eh?
That'll be Fripp-ing fantastic. Will it end up in the Hall and be the same colour as a Lark's Tongue? Should be able to play some nice Cadences on it as they Cascade into each other.
Hehehe
I could go on forever...

Neck treated to one coat of Aged Vintage.

Going to try something brave (ie. foolhardy) with this one; a sunburst on the neck in matching shades to the body. The Aged Vintage will cure then I will treat the neck the same as the body. Let's see what happens.

Deep coat of Carmine Gypsy applied to the neck over the Aged Vintage base coat. The plan is either to steel wool back the central area to reveal the yellow, or to steel wool the edges to provide more tooth for the base coats of CG.

And now the neck. First burst application- some rough edges to be smoothed on the second coat, but the vintage Gibson vibe is starting to happen...

No Adam - only Tele's deserve Conch Girl - I don't think DB would allow someone with a bass kit to buy it...

First burst attempt on the front. Shot in the early morning sun, for added impact.

Bass Guy

Nah, I want it a little redder still. Plus it's a bit messy- needs a tidy up.

Bass Guy
22-02-2014, 08:22 AM
Getting there.

I think the neck is done, and will just need Wudtone top coats. The front needs a little more reddy goodness, but I am happy with the burst blend.

Brendan,
One of the benefits of Shellac is that you can wipe it off with a bottle of metho. BUT. Shellac is a lot harder to get a nice even coat with My es335 RAW kit has become a nightmare with getting a nice even colour. I've even tried spraying shellac on it. 'BG' if you are reasonably happy then leave it. experience with trying to go that extra step with colour is that it rarely works out how you want it. :D

Cheers PK

Bass Guy
23-02-2014, 10:44 AM
Well, I am committed to leaving it as is now. I have started to scrape the binding clean so I won't be tempted to meddle anymore. ;)

Bass Guy

Yes it is, Gavin. Just need to scrape and steel the binding to clean it up, and then on goes the coats of Wudtone Extra Gloss with Ageing Tint.

Then the "fun" of wiring begins.... 8O

Bass Guy

re the tuners, I have decided to keep the originals as you see- just for the exercise of seeing how/if they work.

There is a smidge of overhang from some of the mounting plates, but I have it in mind to grind these off at a later date.
