My SG-1F kit arrived on Friday and I wasted no time in un-boxing it... I have to say I really am impressed with the quality of the kit. I had a neck setup and bone nut done as well (Thanks Dingobass) and it feels like a dream.

The plan for the guitar is stripped back and pure rock but still classy.... stay tuned!

I done a little bit of mucking around today... plugged up/re-located a few of the control holes

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/roofdrop/DSC_1475_zps4ccdb708.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/roofdrop/media/DSC_1475_zps4ccdb708.jpg.html)

And started mucking around with the headstock.

Hopefully tomorrow I can start sanding and hit it with some grain filler.

Cheers Gav, I'm going with satin black on the body/neck/headstock with a little bit of white detail.

I hit the body with some sandpaper/grain filler/sand paper this afternoon and managed to get a bit of dye on the fretboard... I only made it to the 12th fret (going backwards) but the rosewood is now somewhere in between ebony and pure black :)

The inlays still need cleaning up but I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Great work Mick. If I can ask, what kind of dye are you using on the fretboard? How do you clean up the inlays?

cheers,
Gav.

zeromick
11-02-2014, 08:56 PM
Cheers guys, the dye is just a water based one used for dyeing leather i think, the rosewood soaks it up like a sponge and being water based it doesn't really take to the frets or inlays. All that's required to clean of any residual dye on teh inlays is a whipe over with water and a bit of a polish.

I finished filling and smoothing out where I plugged up the additional holes this afternoon and I'm loving the results... you wouldn't even know there were any there originally! You can also see where I relocated the jack to on the side... kind of tele style but no metal plate will be fisible, it'll just be all smoothed over and painted.

also finished dyeing the fretboard, really happy with this result as well.

zeromick

Thanks Adam... the holes are plugged up because I'm stripping this thing right back to basics. I'm going for a really clean, classy (but still badass) look :)

I set the neck in this morning and figured I should start on the electrics while the glue was curing.

Here's the the simplified controls still in the "jig"

I also glued a veneer on the headstock... photos to come after I tidy it up a bit ;)

zeromick
18-02-2014, 07:12 PM
I set the neck in over the weekend and shot the whole guitar with primer. Getting close to shooting the top coats now, I'm just making sure the body is flawless before these coats go on.... so still lots of sanding and grain filling.

Here's a shot of the final headstock shape.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/roofdrop/DSC_1492_zpsdd9ad6af.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/roofdrop/media/DSC_1492_zpsdd9ad6af.jpg.html)

zeromick

I shot the first top coat the other day... then the bloody thing fell off the hanger and onto the ground. Back to square one then and a few days later I've shot the 'first' top coat again...
I'll shoot another tomorrow and then it's onto a few coats of flat clear and then onto the details....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/roofdrop/DSC_1501_zps81324ade.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/roofdrop/media/DSC_1501_zps81324ade.jpg.html)

zeromick
24-02-2014, 08:18 AM
I shot 2 coats of flat black yesterday and 2 coats of flat clear today... wet sanding smooth in between coats of course!

I also sprayed a little detail before the clear coats as well...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/roofdrop/DSC_1509_zps432c9b38.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/roofdrop/media/DSC_1509_zps432c9b38.jpg.html)

i'm planning to shoot at least 4 clear coats... so fingers crossed I'll be assembling mid week and playing that first blues lick by the weekend haha

Disastrous results after the third clear coat… all the paint crackled and f-ed the finish up… looks like it’s back to square 1 again.
I’ve had to leave home and go to Adelaide for an undetermined amount of time as well so it could be a little while before I can get stuck back into it :(

wokkaboy
27-02-2014, 04:56 AM
bugger Mick thats bad news on both accounts. Loving how this SG was looking.
I know how you feel with the paint rejecting after clear coats, it really sucks.
Hope you can get back onto the project and match the same high quality finish you were at

zeromick
16-03-2014, 08:04 AM
righto.... back into it!

I spent the day today stripping the shitty clear coat off and taking the finish back down to the primer in places. I shot the thing in another coat of flat black and now that it's dry I've been rubbing it down with some wet and dry ready for (fingers crosses) the final coat tomorrow.... third times the charm!

Here's a shot with the hardware sitting on it and the covers pulled off the humbuckers.

If that cracking is even over the whole guitar it could actually be a great effect. I take it that it's not what you want Mick?

zeromick
24-03-2014, 02:55 AM
It's all over the body... don't get me wrong, it looks awesome but after 4 attempts at getting a good finish for this to happen kinda pissed me off haha.

I'll come back to it tomorrow after I've cooled down and re-evaluate the situation :)

Scott J.
29-03-2014, 06:46 AM
Hey Mick,

I can fully appreciate "freaking out" when you saw the cracking in the finish (if it had been me there would have been "blue bloody murder" occuring!!!). However ... as soon as I saw the up close pic, a very creative thought struck me ...

If that cracked finish (in the close up) is indicative of what its like all over the body, rather than get rid of it you might try highlighting it! ... do a "wipe over" of the body in white! Done how I'm thinking the white will fill the cracks and (with a very light and judicious clean-up and clear top coat) it might possibly give a "crackling lightning-strike" type of finish.

Might end up look really good - might look like absolute shite ... but if you're going to sand it back it anyway it would be an interesting experiment that would only cost a bit of extra time.

wokkaboy
29-03-2014, 07:01 AM
great idea Scott, I think white in the cracks would look brilliant and original

worth a crack I reckon Mick !

zeromick
29-03-2014, 07:30 AM
Thanks for the ideas guys! I did think of that Scott (great minds must think alike when 'freaking out') and I actually gave it a try the other day out of frustration/madness/boredem and it came up alright and could work if someone else found themselves in the same situation.

This isn't the look i'm going for unfortunately so i've bit the bullet and its back to raw timber to start from scratch... again.

after saying that for the 4th time now 'start from scratch' has lost all meaning haha

Brendan
29-03-2014, 01:06 PM
Bugger. Not having much joy - is there something wrong with the paint / environment that's causing the cracking? Guessing humidity / temp??? Don't know much about sprays...

jarrod
29-03-2014, 03:22 PM
What paint are you using Mick because that is a typical reaction of none compatable paints. For example enamel and acrylic do not mix and this will happen.

zeromick
29-03-2014, 08:46 PM
The first time the finish went crap it was because of a bad clear coat, the second time I thought I'd accidentally used an enamel and acrylic as Jarrod said but was not the case, environmental factors had a hand to play in that one I'm afraid..... just unlucky :(

zeromick
30-03-2014, 02:13 AM
I bit the bullet and got the paint stripper out today... still need to finish off the sides and back before i hit it with the primer.

the neck and headstock are fine so im going to mask them off and save re-doing the whole thing.

zeromick
04-04-2014, 09:40 AM

jarrod
04-04-2014, 10:02 AM
Mick if humidity is a problem for you in your area you need to purchase an infrared heater to fast dry acrylic clears. Soon as each coat goes on heat it up for 15 - 20 mins.

Hey Mick, I'm doing a satin black LP body - how are you keeping the minor blemishes off? You can't polish them out or it's not a satin finish anymore...

zeromick
