New Tele off the table!
Love the knots and imperfections gives it some character !
will curve the surface and make a brass one piece plate of some sorts all with cnc of course just to bring joy to the haters out there who believe cnc is not good enough to express your creativity in any way! its my tool of choice to make what I like the same way others like their caveman old school stuff, I do have some relics in my shop I promise! love looking at them, brings a tear or 2 for and from my good old times! then press START! tears gone! ...ANYWAY!
here I go onward and forward into my future! Cnc Ablazing and parts just fly off like greased lightning! whoohoo!"Bring Me another Cutter!" he shouts! need to feed the monster pure Carbide Tungsten as its staple diet! it does like shnaking those!
this was actually just to show my buddy who has a guitar shop what can be done with 27min cutting time, it was his wood, and when I asked him what he was gonna do with it, he said he was just gonna chuck into the back of his workshop never to see the light of day ,SOO Its mine now! bwahahaha!

looks great Haydn, I don't mind the knotty look. I've built a couple of camphor bodied guitars and its nice wood to work with and the smell when cutting is nice.
Where did your buddy get the blank from ? He's mad to want to chuck it !

IMO art is art, regardless of the tools used to create it.

Keep it happening . . .

Pretty cool.... you say it takes 27 minutes to cut the body out? How long does it take to set up the machine and the blank?... Just curious to know because I can can produce a body blank in 35 minutes via the "cave man" method :)

VanHaydn
08-02-2014, 11:49 AM
thats 27 with pockets as well , now add another 30 for the "perfectly" curved surface that does not need sanding after and about a wopping 3 min to cut a perfect 90 degree "following the contour" binding channel "something that cant be done with a standard router as it would dig into the wall stock if the router plate was 90 degree on the face of the axe ,about 2 min to setup machine if ive got saw dust in my eyes
( I will make a vid of this event to see how long it actually takes), so apart from the 2 min setup time its stand about, drink tea, talk shit, scratch my balls (still a cave man thing to do in the man cave), give a blast of air now and then
her ya go

Another question. How long to write the program to accomplish this Masterpiece? I am a total noob when it comes to CNC programming..
It takes me about an hour to mark out, cut and dress my body and cavity templates. Once I have them, as stated before, I can have the body blank fully machined in 35 minutes.
I am also intrigued by the no sanding required claim. Surely no matter how finely the machine cuts you will still need to do a final finish sanding?

Gee Haydn - putting us all to shame!!! Looking absoulutely awesome. Love the grain!

VanHaydn

Actually Dingo the tool path I used here to get the blank out the stock took 15 min complete, no sanding or Finnish sanding on the face required when you cut .3 of a mm with a 6 mm cutter it's finnishes it for you only polishing left, these are all rough cuts, should I choose to use Finnish cuts it will come out polished, takes about and hour to program the drawing for the 1st time one after that it's done and takes 3 clicks of a mouse to load it , my table can do 4 at a time each one flawless or as good as the wood will allow it to be, so defiantly not the same time a machine can do many more without breaking a sweat, that's probably why 100% of commercially available kits are made that way .once I get a hang of this things will change it's only my 3 rd go at a body so time will tell I'm gonna push my cutter and take full 6mm bites at full throttle and let ya know what happens there good or bad I like a challenge so I say to myself bring it on mr cnc let's see what ya got!

Groovy... I can see the merits of this machine for multiple repeats of the same body shape, size and dimentions... if you had several orders for the same body you would be nuts to deny the merits of of using a CNC machine. My interest in CNC lies in other areas, such as creating hardware etc, but that is another subject altogether. ;)

Im also more interested in the hardware side of things! will be making a system for this axe from stuff laying about my workshop Ive built a 4 axis milling machine from a pillar drill now going to install the 5th as well so things should get interesting, cutting out 2 d shapes is ok bit brainless really like cookie cutter methodology not much challenge there really 1st few are fun but after that its hmm ok NEXT! making 5 axis stuff now that will keep the grey matter sparkling!

well I can tell you without a doubt that after 3 trys at putting a piece of binding on...Im totally shit at that job hey! Have a neck to fit the body now, was also a rejected one some strange wood grain markings on the fretboard...I like them so will be using the neck! has a strange heel ground into it so replicated the dimentions and machined them into the body for a 100% fit, really nice fit after all said and done,

all done
give myself a 6/10 for 1st go,little faults but nothing to freakout about not gonna spend too much time perfecting it,
will perfect the way I do it in future attempts and better it that way, its a lot of work for a little bit of accent thats for sure,it does give it a bowtie and smart dress affect! Imhappy with it...now the next thing is to do some carvings into the top deck and a brass custom scratch plate and pickup holder as well as do something with that knott

Love the inlay idea, but are you masking some of the real character of the guitar - that big knot looks great! In light of the inlay, is it worth looking at the pup surrounds and control plate and making them more organic? Overall though, love where it is going.

VanHaydn
16-02-2014, 02:46 AM
thanx
thats why i chose to ditch the standard tele scratch plate, gave me more wood grain ..as i said some will love some wont its subjective, for me its an experiment and learning curve in how to appproach different styles, so this axe will have a few of them, later on with more builds, things will become more polished and slick, im not sold on the ideas just yet so will try more variations with the G10 i have left and go from there!Istill have to get the pocketing system perfect and have to do the practice run in the live stock! best have no fear and take as many chances as possible! That top knot is not very attractive in real life is a 3d stuffup something you dont see with a 2d photo so has to be covered like a shitty tattoo done while you where 16 and drunk !
so a few more ideas and layouts to come stay tuned!

VanHaydn
16-02-2014, 09:31 AM
Ok new design as promised ..I pref this look with the grain once its polished up will gleam like the chrome, so will make a new design for the controls and PUPs to see that as well,
I may actually stick with the flower design but on the headstock will check out how it looks once its scaled down to fit and then also cut the headstock, by buddy started havin a go at this head but abandoned it so it will get some love in my cave!

I think it's hard to go past your first inlay attempt in terms of a fit with the grain, but you have! That new design is fantastic! Some of the more experienced crowd may provide some advice, but if it's that bad, is it a case for some epoxy? Something that will fill it, but clear to highlight the character of the wood, but not provide a point of resonation that close to the neck.

VanHaydn
16-02-2014, 11:19 AM
Thanx!
yea it is bad..there is a piece of branch that is inside the knot that came out clean ..so I epoxied it back but still a massive hole that needs filling ..I will machine the hole out and fill it with the stock that the plug came out of, well near that corner anyway the grain is pretty close so thats the next Job really before I machine the pocket for the inlay
cheers

Ok inlay went in and a few hairs went out! Turns out if you want to pocket a curved surface (without Knowledge) you need a 4th axis machine the size of a house! so all I did was center line the guitar on a long oak dowel rotate to make the surface i wanted to pocket sorta level and did a 2D pocket , unfortunatly this method make an even pocket depth on an a curved surface. Not what i was after..so back to school and try learn some new tricks, but pretty happy with the outcome anyway! had to smack the inlay in with a plastic interface and a light hammer! I cut the pocket exactly the same size as inlay and we all know that will never fit...so made a new toolpath to take .2mm off the walls and its match made in heaven!

Must be pretty satisfying to get it this far! That one would have pride of place in anyone's pool room.

Thanx Gents!

now to get this hooked up to electricity ! has a nice acoustic sound, definatly has that thin sounding tele feel about it must be the curved surface throwing it or the bridge on the face with washers as shims! its light as its a thinline for sure couldnt get a Jackplug in the side even if i wanted to, But I had other ideas anyway..its going between the volume and tone, looks great, just use a right angled input jack! I may go for a stacked switchable humbuk if Im not happy with the drive!

I can imagine moving the tone forward and putting the jack at the back of the plate, but between sounds a bit bizarre. I'd even consider replacing the tone pot with the jack, as I've basically never used the tone control on my guitars over almost 30 years of playing. I use the volume control though and I have visions of the guitar chord getting the way. Can't wait to see pictures of it wired up so I can see how this config really works.

I like bizzare and different. it can fit at the back no worries but I put it in the middle just to be different, as I also just always crank knobs full and thats where they stay until I pull the plug,

Are they high gain pickups? The harmonics really jump out.

Fantastic job.

so the bigsby didnt like been tightened down on a slight arched surface..so made a neat little pocket with cnc, the surface is 100% flat everywhere! oh and the bigsby is still shit at keeping its tune teehee! so now to make some mods to the bridge as a next option to sorting the tuning
