Righto - that's the vision - maybe a little larger so may need some reinforcement underneath...

What I've got to work with:
Max dimension - width max ~ 1000mm depth max ~ 600mm.

Off to the green barn for a visioning exercise...

600 x 900 x 12mm ply ~$10
Some pipe insulation ~$4
Some dowel (forgot photo) ~$4
Must have some decent screws around here somewhere...

I wonder if I know someone with a dirty great bandsaw that would make light work of some ply...

Hey, I like where this mini-series is going.

I think every one here needs more stands.

Where in oz are you Brendan?

Perth, north side. Still gotta work out the plan and get the materials. I figured out that it looks do-able and inexpensive though for someone whose woodworking experience is primarily sanding guitars and can be counted in hours - not days...

You must be talking about Wok's bandsaw, mine is clean!

Wont be that way for long Gav.. if he comes around..lol
Bendan, you could do that easily with a jig saw, cut one side to shape then transfer the shape to the other side.. And as they say on the woody bits on the better homes n garden show.. you could "knock it up in an afternoon"

Had a good think overnight I may have the tools here after all - have a dodgy circular saw - but should be good enough to rip the back bits off and cut the sides to rough shape out of a couple of sheets. Then thinking of screwing the two parts together and cutting them both at once with a jigsaw to get the cutouts to shape. Currently trying to think of how to do it with the least sheets of ply.

Current thinking - 1 sheet of marine AA ply 12 mm for the sides - Bunnings has it at 1200 x 600 lengths for ~$26. This should give me 4 sides if needed...
1 sheet of BC interior ply for bottom and top rails - these will be padded so I don't need the quality of appearance. I should get heaps of lengths out of a sheet if I am looking for a 900 mm wide stand. I was thinking to reinforce the bottom rails at least - if I'm getting a couple of basses on this, it may get a touch heavy.

As mentioned, my woodworking skills to date have been more destructive than constructive, so happy to take advice.

I've been toying with an idea very similar to this for a while now.

The part that always concerned me was getting the weight balance right (so the guitars don't tip it over).

Interested to see how this one comes out Brendan.

Cheers

Darren

Got the orders today - need to clean up my guitars so off to Bunnings to get some lumber...

Returned with 1 x 1200 x 600 AA grade marine ply for the sides ~$25 if this thing works I'll get 2 stands out of one piece.
1 x 1200 x 900 BC grade piece of ply for the bottom and back. Figured the B would be seen, the C not. $20.
1 x Length of 16mm dowel
1 x pipe insulation to go around the dowel to keep the guitars apart.
Height will be 600mm
Depth ~450mm
Width ~900mm

Got the sides cut out - can do it with cheap tools, but I can definately see where good tools come into their own...

It may be quite some time before Bman finishes this stand...
He is currently serving time in the cupboard under the stairs for shopping at the BGSFOS :p

Still considering just how long he will be in solitary..

Unfortunately I can't find any other source for plywood sheets - would love to get my hands on some nice birch ply (at a reasonable price that is). Stan good call to finish it - I see all the parts to complete it everytime I go into the shed. I'm hoping to get a life back after 3 April and should be able to get back to building stuff then.

I believe Brendan is training for the Dams Challenge, on April 3rd, which is taking up his GAS time.

Got it in one Swanny - I've had the "I'll be glad when the ride is over" talk from the missus - training is taking some time, but more taking it out of me on the weekend so energy levels are low.
