View Full Version : AJ- First Scratch Build

Thought I'd start one like Dan did.. seemed easy enuff... :?
So here goes.
After being inspired by the other thread, I was fortunate to source the same sort of exotic wood as Dan so I had the green shed chop 1 length into 600 mm pieces. I then glued and clamped to get my solid bit of wood (45mm thick). I then made a template for the body and routed out the shape.

I then waited for the PBG neck to be delivered so I could then make up a template to rout the neck pocket. I used my laser guide to get the neck straight along the center line. that all done and marked out on the body, I then transferred the outline etc via the good old expensive oven liner paper. Have now just about completed the the template.

Over the Chrissy break, whilst being dragged around the shopping centers by the boss, I thought (yeah I know that doesn't happen often these days.. was one of them times I didn't have a grandpa moment..lol)to myself , I said, self, there's a fishmonger here in these walls of HELL... So I waddles of the the fishy guy and says a big warm Hi! Just wondering if you have any abalone shell? or Oyster shells? or maybe some really fat mussel shells? Well I struck out on 2 so not too bad a effort. He said to come back in the morning ... I thought oh yeah.. getting the polite rack-off from him.. :x
So, the next mornings I front up and sees him again and he said.. how much you want? 150Kg? :P I said I wouldn't mind just a few of the oyster shells to give this project a whirl.. I got given a shopping bag full of the shell tops..
Moral to this little story is , always worth asking.
I have given 2 shells a bit of a sanding and a polish to see how they would come up. I reckon they will come up a treat as small bits layered/ joined to make small logo's or unique fret board markers.

Braver man than I am at the moment AJ - well done - looks like it will be a cracker! Looking at your template - 1 'bucker? You going to do any more shaping (rounding edges, arm / belly cutouts)?

AJ
04-01-2014, 07:50 AM
Ty for the great comments guys, I will detail later on how I go about the prepping of the oyster shells, and but the basic technique is to file/ sand the rough outside to a smooth surface, then you trim off sections to get "flat pieces" then it's a matter of mix match to get what you want , not to dissimilar to the sheets of MOP that you buy, same sort of method except they laminate the little flat bits together to form a sheet.

I got the neck routing done today and drilled the mounting holes for the neck, next major job is to line up the bridge position , then I will mark out and route for the pups. ATM I have a sort of spare loaded scratch plate with HSH set up, might use those for this.
Still deciding whether or not I will do a sort of arched top to it, but I do plan to do a belly cutout and some rounding here n there.

I set the neck height for the solid tail bridge, but not 100% sure now after the light mock up. My preference is for sting through the body but if worse comes. I have the spare tele bridge from my TL kit. Also open to ideas/ suggestions.

Yeah, the work bench.. am having to rough it as my shed has been taken over by all manner of my daughters gear .. so much for temporary storing here.. over 2 + years now, when she went over to Perth for work. :( Nearly time to ring the salvo's to get rid of it, I keep threatening to do that ;) .

Hey - I washed up in Perth 21 years ago when I came across to do Uni before returning east. As you can guess, the return east never happened. I do return though every couple of years to remind myself how nice it is on this side of the country :).

As for the workbench - as they say - necessity is the mother of invention...

I don't mind so much working on the "movable workbench".. comes in handy..lol
Been a bit lax lately as was having a little trouble with the neck being a tad narrower that the norm, but have managed to line up the bridge now with a tad under 1.5 mm for the strings from the edge of the fretboard at the neck joint.

After seeing the references to infa-red heating systems for paint drying, I had a browse around an off colored shed to find some 275 watt infa red lamps, and 2 el-cheapo outdoor floodlights. So will now have an infa red heating lamp to speed up the drying processes.. Last heat lamp systems I had access to or used were the old style of many, many bulbs that sent the leccy meter into orbit.. So basic style lamp system for ~ $40
Hopes to get some more done over the weekend , next week will be far to hot for me outside.

What do you guys think may be better - a rosewood surround for pickups? or maple? got some of each style of wood in 3 mm thickness .

Not yet Lawry, I did speak to the fella at my local music store (Underground music) and asked if he would give it a run though for me so I could get a vid of it being put through it paces by some someone with some talent, I do hope to get that sometime before the end of this month. :D

What a cool project, I'll be watching with interest as this one shapes up.
Speaking of shapes, is the body gunna be basically Strat-ish?
Sounds like you're agonising over the fit-out, but that's par for the course.
Anyway I reckon you've got some great ideas to play with . . .

P.S. I woulda just bought 6 oysters on the 1/2 shell and slipped 'em down the gullet.
Nevertheless, I hope the real oyster nacre markers work out :)

Finally got some more done today.. after melting over here in Melbourne..
routed out the pup area, drilled the though holes for the strings, made up a pick guard from 3mm maple veneer and sorted out how I'm going to mount the pots n switch.

I free hand routed the pups as I was slacking it.. worked out good for me.

AJ
20-01-2014, 08:19 AM
thanks for the great comments guys, I am using this as an additional learning curve for myself. Dan, I am a tad lazy and generally go the free hand route, just a matter of taking your time, and keeping a good hold of the router, once you have the pocket deep enough, it actually then becomes your template/ guide (if using a straight bit that is). Also being a one off, there is no real advantage in the effort to make a template, however, that said, I would recommend making templates for future use etc.

Today I got the control cavity routed and prelim holes drilled for the pots and switch. There is a slight straying in one spot in the pocket as a bloody fly attacked me.. I stopped at that time and went on the hunt to kill the pesky critter, which is now 1 micron thick and 3 inches wide..lol It's not a problem and wont effect the cosmetic look as it will be covered in copper shielding.

I also rough shaped the top, now only some major finishing sanding to the top . Still have not made up my mind as to do a gut relief on the back.. all in all, a productive day.

If you squint, and turn your head to the right angle, think I almost have an arched top .. ;)

The bevel on the edges really adds some depth mate. I'm gonna have to pinch this idea.

It's a really effective look. Should look even better under a nice finish.
What was your weapon of choice for the carving?

AJ
20-01-2014, 11:31 AM
your welcome to pop on round Stan, just give us a ring before to make sure I'm home.

Dan, I started off using a 45 bevel routing bit, then marked more areas to use the router till it was no longer able to safely do what I needed in the various depths and way points I had marked out, I then progressed to the angle grinder with a sanding disk and took it the other pre-marked steps, hence rounding out the straight bevels. I would have used my spoke shave if I could have found it in the shed under all the other crap being stored in there. The principle is the same as having a lot of templates of graduated sizes and then routing. The same sort of process could be roughed out with a wood rasp.

got a bit more done now, the body is now drying waiting for the clear coats to go on. I used jarah stain, as the main , with a very slight feathering of mahogany around the edge blended back to the jarha. I then "de-gunked" the gold high lights leftover from my LP kit and did a smearing across the grain.
I've never used true oil before, but have a bottle in the shed, or I could go the clear lacquer method.. So what do you guys think.. true oil or clear coat?

Next item on the agenda is to De-fret the neck clean up the finger board and fix up around the nut area. Might even attack those oyster shells to have a go at making some fret markers from them.

Got the clear coats done today, the first coat I put some of the gold highlights into it to give it a subtle gold fleck through out. I then went on to do a few straight clear coats, allowing about an hour in between as I had the infrared light drying it. The gold flecks worked a real treat and are very subtle giving a slight metal flaky look at different angles.
Wont take much to cut n polish this one , the wood grain looks as if has been "airbrushed into flames... looking from the back to front", maybe I might be able to get Stan to get some better pictures for me when he drops by ;)

I have now de-fretted the neck, have to order some fret wire ( 2.7 mm wide stuff), unless you can reuse the fret wire? Nut area fixed now, so will start to sand the back , head stock, mark and drill the tuner holes etc.

yep, it is dry there Adam, will leave it a few days to completely harden up before I ht it with 2000 grit wet n dry and then with 3000 grit wet /dry. I think Jarrod has the edge on doing gloss finishes.

@ Gavin, no matey this isn't eligible for PBG monthly entry as I had only purchased a neck from you guys.. I am seriously considering redoing the pick guard on the TL-1 to remove the gilding on it.. then I might enter that one next month..

And thanks every one for the great comments, just hope I don't stuff up the rest of it as I am considering sending it over to the eldest son (he's in Perth) to keep for when the grandson grows up enough to hopefully learn to accomplish something that I have for my life struggled to do... that is belt out a song on one of these and have it sound reasonable to those forced to endure the listening... :D

Ty Matt, I ended up going the with the lacquer, So I still have the new bottle of true oil that I want to experiment/ learn to use it.

Q for the gurus: I have seen somewhere that the only oil needed for fretboard protection is "boiled Linseed Oil" how effective is that and is that better that the lemon/orange/distillate witches brews labeled as fret juice etc???? ( the lemon/orange component would surely create a slightly "acidic" tendency.. )

Update:
Got a bit more done today with the scratch built guitar.
I got the body cut and polished and did the shielding. I also inserted the ferrules for the through body string retaining.
Still waiting on the fret wire to turn up in the post , then I can re fret the neck then finish sanding and also shape the head stock.

Just a second while I pick my jaw up off the floor.

That must be the deepest, most glossy finish I've seen. I need to take a trip down south so you can show me your secrets.

The finish looks more akin to a fine French polished table top. Make sure you wear some white cotton gloves when you play this beauty.

You have blown my first effort out of the park, your attention to detail is superb. I can't wait to see it strung up.

AJ - sublime job! Totally amazing to think that a couple of weeks ago it was resting in Bunnings and about to become something totally mundane and you rescued it! Is that a pickup surround on some of the photos - same wood?

As for staining the fretboard black - are you planning the neck in a similar colour to the body? Last thing you'd want though is to take the attention away from the body with that beauty.

What colour bling are you thinking of? Gold? If so, I'd be tempted to keep with a rosewood neck and keep to the red / gold palete. Maybe go gloss with it though like the Ricky necks?

Thanks guys for the fantastic comments, I'm humbled by them coming from guys that are so talented.

The hardware is a chrome solid tail bridge, couldn't get a round chrome jack ( so that will be the odd bit out , fortunately, it cant be seen unless directly looking at it.).. Tuners are chrome. Am planning on doing the back of the neck in jarah stain, then using gloss wood tone clear so it should be "slippery"
The gold fleck through out is subtle but jumps out at various angles. that is why I thought.. mm maybe blacking the fret board.

Dan, your work is outstanding quality, and it is what inspired me to have a crack at this. The gold fleck/ highlight was an old nearly off wood tone, so I added some to the clear and sprayed the first coat with that in a "dry-ish manner", same sort of process is used for doing metal flake. The next few coats were clear with the addition of a touch of jarah stain into the mix, that then gives a perceived deeper look, the final two light coats were plain clear.

Excellent work AJ. That finish is so deep that it looks like toffee. Mmmm, toffee. :?

Update - the custom designed effort:
Made a transfer up for the head stock, stained and clear-coated the neck, have now cut n polished the neck.
Made a bone nut and have filed the string slots, action at neck end is good. Neck now fitted and strung the guitar, carried out a rough intonation, will redo that along with neck relief when the neck has settled in. (note to self.. remember to glue the nut into place )
Apart from the neck pocket being a smidgeon too large(I routed the neck pocket before getting the neck and had taken the dimensions from the tele neck on my TL-1.The neck I received was of a slightly smaller width at the base. After having a 5 min play, am a happy camper with the sound and satisfied with the way it is.)

Overall this has been a great joy to do.

As for the sound, to me it can go from a deep Les paul through to a strat/Tele sound :)

Top job A.J.

I'm still in awe of that finish you were able to achieve. Stunning.
And the work you did carving the body contours has paid off. It really adds depth and character to the guitar.
