Oh wow... Just wow!!!

So I got home from school today and saw a big box on my bed... Found out it was the good ol' ST-1 kit, from someone awesome (not going to name names here)!!!

First impressions are fantastic! All parts are there, body only has tiny little dents in the curves, absolutely brilliant like always!!!

But there is only one problem, I looked at the neck and saw a neat crack / scratch on the first and second frets, then found another large scratch on frets 9-12!

Pics will be up soon, oh and colour choice is a nice red body with a clear neck, maybe even a hint of yellow

The PEST is back!!!
Great to see you back in the "My Build Diary", Pest.
I'm sure the red strat will be a cracker!

Cheers
Andy

Hey Pest, great to have you back building again, its been a bit too quiet lately with Pest's posts.
Look forward to seeing pics and hope the cracks in the frets aren't too serious.
I'm sure DB will do you a good price for wudtone since xmas is around the corner !
Also I joined the over 1000 posts club on Sunday so think that's a limited club - me/Pest/Gav/DB

@Andy: Yeah, I had this build on my mind for a while now, in my head it looks brilliant!
@Woks: Haha, yeah, I was hard at work studying for a maths exam, but I'm so happy to be back now!!
The cracks don't look too serious, I'll ask DB and probably Gavmeister about it soon.

Hey Pest,

Congratulations! A pitbull box is always the best kind of surprise. I'm sure the red strat will be killer. Can't wait for the build to get going! Let's see those obligatory 'unboxing' photos!!

cheers,
Gav.

oh the cracks are on the fingerboard, I was thinking the actual frets were cracked. Looks like alot of filler and glue. Might be worth trying to sand these out and may need refilling with some dark brown timbermate

Gavin1393
27-11-2013, 07:36 AM
Hi Pest

I did reply privately. Think the fretboard may have had too much sun / heat. Agree with Wokka, grab some Timbermate, then carefully sand between the frets. You might need to get rid of the glue first though. Looking forward to seeing another build from you young man now that the exams are finished!

keloooe
27-11-2013, 11:04 AM
Yeah, I did a bit of sanding to remove the glue, but the board, even the whole kit hasn't seen direct sunlight at all! The sun has been on the opposite side of the house to my windows, I found the cracks straight away after unboxing!

Also, what colour Timbermate is best for rosewood?

stan
27-11-2013, 07:05 PM
Hope the exams went well. Good to see you back and building, are you sticking with all PB parts?

keloooe
27-11-2013, 07:47 PM
@Stan: yeah, they went well :D
I'm sticking to PB parts for now but I'll mod the pickguard post-build

wokkaboy
28-11-2013, 12:51 AM
Pest, I think the Gavmeister thought your neck may have been exposed to sun/heat before it got to you.
Here's the link to timbermate
http://www.timbermate.com.au/products/Timbermate+WaterBased+Wood+Filler.aspx
click on colour range, closest rosewood colours appear to be walnut (a bit too light) or ebony looks a little too dark.
Might be best to go to a good hardware and take your neck and compare the colour with the sample colour picture on the tub.
In the meantime you got some of DB's mantra to do - sanding !
Take your time cutting the headstock shape, just go to google images - search for strat headstock - go for an older style is cooler IMO

keloooe
29-11-2013, 04:07 AM
Got the headstock shape roughed in yesterday, copied it off my Strat copy, personally the Fender shape is too large!

wokkaboy
29-11-2013, 05:22 AM
I've emailed Pest a more traditional strat headstock shape but he's going to try something in between his 1st sketch and a Fender shape. You going to handsaw this at home Pest ? last I asked you the woodwork teacher wouldn't let you cut it there ?

keloooe
29-11-2013, 08:04 PM
Yeah, I'll try it freehand, if it doesn't appeal to me, I'll always have the first draft on the headstock to cut from! I'll probably cut it at home, makes it so much easier!
Apart from the fact that I'll have to go to the big green shed... Okay, Gavmeister and AJ, make some room guys!!!

keloooe
03-12-2013, 03:30 AM
So on Saturday I got all of the drilling finished, and the mock build with everything in place looks fantastic! Pics up soon when light gets better.

I am planning on buying a Dremel or similar tool and routing out the bridge pup rout to hold a humbucker, specifically the Epiphone 700T which I have removed from my Epi LP Jr, which for now is the only mod I am planning, but I might throw in a few others if I really think they are cool for this build!

keloooe
04-12-2013, 02:51 AM
Hey guys, is there a really good place where I can get a custom neck plate? I see some of the newer builds in GOTM are using them, I'm extremely curious as to where to get one

pablopepper
04-12-2013, 03:03 AM
Take your neckplate to a trophy store or in a pinch one of those key cutting/shoe repair kiosks. I'd say they could do you some custom engaving.

wokkaboy
04-12-2013, 03:10 AM
yes thats right Pablo. Pest find a good engraver and take the plate there. You can engrave Pests Pestocaster on it !

djdubya
04-12-2013, 06:43 AM
Pest, I asked a guy at a a key cutting place in the local mall if he could do the job but he reckoned he'd have trouble copying the font I wanted. He recommended a trophy shop so I took in the neckplate and a print of the artwork I'd done. After a chat with the guy there I emailed the font and my mockup and he did a great job of it!

Since you're building a strat I'd recommend looking for the fender font online. At first glance P looks F in that font :)

Cheers,
Dennis.

keloooe
09-12-2013, 08:01 PM
Hi Dennis, I will definitely look around!
So, not much has happened, pics can't be up for now because of some issues, but they will definitely be up soon!

While I was gone I burned through my copper supplies (DB I need more!), did the bottom of the cavity and part of the pickguard!
Finish is definitely going to be Carmine Gypsy for the body and Vintage Amber for the neck, but I will use some black stain on the body then sand it out with 180 grit sandpaper to pop the grain!

Yo.
You can try a local trophy shop as Pablo suggested but when I took mine to a couple they baulked at it (check the Matriarch). In the end I got it done here

http://www.labelx.net/catalog/

and I'm really happy with the result. So far they have done two scratchplates and a neck plate and the result has been fantastic. Hope it helps.

Got a question for ya. Was 'Pest' a name that you gave yourself or was it 'earned'?
I've only been here a few months so don't know the background. I see you have a sh*t load of posts so were you perhaps a little 'enthusiastic' in the beginning?
Seems like everyone knows about you and you must have been absent for a while cos there were a lot of 'welcome back' posts when you restarted.
So... what's the dirt?
Just curious.
Cheers

keloooe
15-12-2013, 12:28 AM
Haha lawry, yes I have been here on the forums since Jan 9 this year!
I got the nickname of 'Pest' a few months into my first build (link in sig), when dingobass wrote 'Pest' on the box as I was asking so many questions about what to do a lot of the time, and I just went with it, and so has the whole forum, I have become a big name here during the past 11 months :P

lawry
15-12-2013, 01:08 AM
Thanks man. It's cool to have a tag with meaning.
Cheers.

Gavin1393
15-12-2013, 02:08 AM
Actually!!!!!! Pests name originates from Miss Fiona, DB's lovely 'other 1/2'. One of these days there will be a quiz with a question, what is pests real name.....no many will know!

keloooe
15-12-2013, 02:10 AM
That question is known by only a few members here, and that name has not been mentioned here on the forums for a long time...

lawry
15-12-2013, 04:15 AM
Unless there has been some name dodging occurring, a quick look at the early posts shows a certain 'Callum' signing off :o

looking good Pest, you should have written Pests Custom Guitars in the tremelo cavity or under the pickguard where it isn't visible !
Are those marks near the output jack grain or machine marks ?
Can see the colour is much deeper and even after the 2nd coat. One more deep colour coat and you should be onto the base coats !

keloooe
18-02-2014, 07:25 AM
@Woks the marks are from the grain, it surprised me when I saw them! Yeah I'll do another deep colour then I'll do 3-5 base coats, then 5 good top coats! By then the neck will be finished

Hey Pest, it's looking good buddy. One thing, your pics are huge (as in file size). If you have some image editing software, try and get them down to 1000px (longest side) and 72dpi. If everyone can do this, it will speed up viewing of the forum.

You've now made a Les Paul and the Strat, so that's the major bases covered. You've got the beginnings of a great guitar collection. Keep it up.

Cheers for the kind words guys!
@Lozza she sounds great, has the distinct tone of a true Stratocaster with even the stock pups!
@rob yer I have most of the major brands done now, I plan on building another F type next!
@Brendan yup, a lot faster than the LP! Congrats on the addition to the PBG team as well buddy!
