Hi all, its always exciting starting a new project, enthusiasm is through the roof. I only started sanding this kit yesterday afternoon and am very happy with the progress. First up I carefully sanded the cap with a 180, 240 orbital sander being very careful not to sand through the thin cap. Next I ragged a black tint on to highlight the flames in black. Then sanded the black tint with a 320 orbital being careful not to sand too deep

Next step was to apply 1st deep coat of amaranthine. Got the headstock cut, a pretty standard Gibson shape. Then got a coat of ama on the headstock. I was cheeky and got a 2nd coat of amaranthine on the body so will let it cure for 2 days then more steel wooling. Can't wait to see the next coat on the body and will start sanding the back/sides for burning sun, then a mahogany stain to deepen the colour to look close to Popeye's current Les Paul build.

Wokka, that's looking brilliant man! You really nailed the black in the flamed figure, and the purple is looking better and better the deeper it gets. This one is going to be amazing. Do you have aramathine on the back of the neck too?? What 'black tint' did you use? Colortone?

cheers,
Gav.

wokkaboy
19-11-2013, 09:31 AM
cheers Gav, the tint is just a Feast Watson black proof tint. I was planning a mahogany colour for the back/sides so was planning a vintage yellow neck goes well with the purple headstock/body top

Nice one as always! You should consider doing a burst too! Might look very nice!

wokkaboy
19-11-2013, 11:45 PM
SimpleOne I did try cherry flamenco burst and it didn't turn out very good, so I went all over with amaranthine. I should have planned it more as I made the outer ama burst too thick

Looking really good already, I would expect to see even more definition once the top coat(s) go on.
Should be an outstanding instrument especially with that unusual colour scheme.
This project, plus one or two others, has got me thinking about trying a "spalty" one fine day.

another angle and a side project we're building wall clocks this is the 1st one a 3/4 scale strat as the chunk of marri wasn't big enough for a full size axe body.

Looking good Wokka and I am with Gav on this one , it doesn't need any highlights

lawry
01-12-2013, 11:30 PM
I'm mixed on this one. It makes a pretty strong statement as is but highlights might look cool when the stage lights hit it.
Anyway, if you don't slow down on your hot builds you'll start making us ( well, me) feel second rate ;-)

wokkaboy
03-12-2013, 12:49 AM
I ended up putting a coat of silver highlights on the cap, pretty happy with the results in the right light they can be seen. Also got final base coat of hot auburn on the back/sides and a coat of extra gloss aged coat on. Photos were taken late in the arvo but the flames are starting to pop. Can't wait to apply 2nd top gloss coat

Hey Wokka, can I bring the washing in for ya!.....You may not get it back though.
Best use I've seen yet for a washing line.
Very impressive lineup.

Cheers

wokkaboy
03-12-2013, 05:26 AM
thanks Andy. I don't use that clothesline for clothes as its shaded fair bit of the day, so its an axe only clothesline. There was another guitar on the line that didn't make it in the photos as well, Popeye's ash strat

Andyport
03-12-2013, 05:34 AM
Bit like the clothesline in my workshop that is used solely to hang digital prints on when drying.
The colour you have used on the sides and back of your LP is excellent, really good choice.
Wish I had used something like that on mine rather than the walnut.

wokkaboy
03-12-2013, 06:23 AM
nice work Andy.
Walnut looked good on your LP. Hot auburn is an under rated colour IMO. It's almost got a hint of brown in the red. Perfect colour for back/sides of a heap of top colour combo's !

gavinturner
03-12-2013, 07:18 AM
Yeah I gotta say Wokka, the combination of your two chosen colours is perfect. The hot auburn really looks great without taking the eye away from the amaranthine. Fantastic. Would be great if you could catch the silver highlights in a photo. I'm interested in what they look like at the right angle.

cheers,
Gav.

wokkaboy
03-12-2013, 07:29 AM
no worries Gav I'll try and get a photo in natural light when I get home from work, I think silver highlights was a good choice

wokkaboy
03-12-2013, 09:54 AM
@ Gav T.
I took some photos in direct sunlight trying to show the silver highlights but they don't show that clearly in a photo, but trust me in person they are very visible in sunlight at the right angle.

yes Gav the highlights are quite subtle but seen from the correct angle gives a great effect. I thoroughly recommend highlights. Bit of wudtone promotion may get me out of the naughty corner !

finally got the neck glued this morning, time to get a hurry up on current projects so I can start the 2 new ones. The neck alignment and fit was pretty good. With any luck I'll get onto soldering the wiring tonight and final setup over the weekend.
Gavmiester I probably won't have time to get out to your man cave to use the buffer before xmas but maybe a visit after if you are on holidays.
I've got a drill operated buffing pad I'll use and a bit of hand polishing.
