Lawry, these Ash bodies are really special. Why would one ever return to Bass wood unless you were going to use a solid colour I guess?

lawry

Totally agree Gav. I had no idea until recently that the grain on an ash guitar could be so pronounced and stunning. I've got to give one a try. They're blowing me away.

The important thing is to use a dark colour on the grain to really make it POP! Cut the darker colour back and then paint it.....! Just gorgeous.

I think that's your best one yet Gav. Just lovely grain feature. And you've been very busy lately.

Since this looks like it might turn out to be a special tele, and since I don't hear any rumours of hanging walls being constructed at PBG HQ, I decided to get some really special Rio grande pickups for this baby.

At this rate we'll need a double garage.....

The cavities in the ash body were a tad smaller than they needed to be to accommodate the rio grande pickups. Put in all the other upgrades in terms of the plate and the volume and tone knobs plus a special 4-way switch especially designed for tele's but whatever you good folks do don't tell adam. i want to hold onto this one......

Great question and timing of the question because that's exactly what I am fighting with at the moment. My thoughts are heading in the 'Thingy' direction, just cant bring myself to cover up the grain...

Keen to hear what others think?

No question Gav go the chrome neck pickup surround thingy, don't even think about a pickguard hiding all that beautiful grain. DB would send you to the naughty room for the entire year of 2014 if you did that !

Ordered the chrome "Thingy"

WeirdBits
12-12-2013, 10:30 AM
How about this...

Cut a copy of the chrome pickup surround out of clear pickguard plastic, take a photo of the grain/finish beside the pickup rout, tweak the colour as necessary then print it onto a transparency or paper (and then laminate/plasticise it), trim to size and glue to the back of your clear pickup ring. If it works you'll have an almost invisible pickup ring. Or, if you have an Ash offcut with similar grain, try making a thin wooden ring and body mount the pickup.

The tele Neck "thingy" has arrived!

I ordered a black and a chrome one. Unfortunately the black one didn't line up with the neck pickup so by default I have to use the Chrome! I think it's a good choice?

One of the ways to get the grain to look really good is to use a dark colour to stain the wood. Once the application has dried you then use sand paper to effectively cut (the wood fibres) back. This is what we mean but cutting back, and then of course you hear comments like "that grain really pops". After the "cut back" you proceed as usual with the paint job!

Gav, how do you get the grain to pop on a spalted cap? Can't really sand much or it will disappear. Or does it take care of itself?

lawry, you have to be very careful with the caps as they are very thin. However, with the spalty it does kinda take care of itself. Shows up best if you use a lighter colour on the cap.

lawry
13-01-2014, 09:47 AM
Thanks Gav. I certainly can see what you mean about 'thin'. I have ordered Burning Sun for the spalted maple, would you consider that a 'lighter colour' or do I need to dilute that? At least initially.

Although this is a bolt on I have both glued and bolted it on.

I bought a special bridge for this guitar and was happily attaching the neck when my pedantic attention to detail was drawn to check the scale length. Oh no!!!!!! Bridge saddles are no where near where the saddles would have been on the original bridge....had to take 10mm more of a neck pocket to get it right! That was close!

You could've invented a new alternate tuning that would've revolutionised music as we know it.

Gavin1393
19-01-2014, 10:30 PM
@Scott - bolt on may have been more forgiving, but the neck pickup is now 2 mm away from the neck!
@Lawry - :). But I think it still has to be in tune to qualify?

Gavin1393
19-01-2014, 10:32 PM
Working on the "string through the body" bridge that will really finish this guitar off. Then I can string it up and have a play!

Looking forward to hearing this, Gav! Including the new tuning ;-) . It sort of reminds me of a Red Dwarf episode on Hol Rock. I copied the quote below from the Red Dwarf wkia page

"Hol Rock was a going to be a breakthough for music according to Holly. It involved decimalising the musical scale. Instead of the octave, it was now the decatave and there where two new notes, H and J. He added "wo" and "bo" to the solfeggio scale: "Do Re Mi Fa So La Wo Bo Ti Do."

Holly also confidently predicted that, due to this enlargement of musical scales, triangles would have four sides and pianos would be the length of a zebra crossing. However one down side was that women would have to be banned from playing the cello, unless they did it side saddle or used birthing stirrups."

Some string thru ferrules, as well as a shot of the bridge of the guitar. The ferrules will be inserted in the rear of the guitar once the cavities have been drilled.

Gav, I can't wait to see this finished. That ash body grain just looks fantastic. Will you be using the holes on the bridge plate as a guide for drilling through the body with a drill press?

@Lawrie - I remember that Red Dwarf episode now that you mention it. I've actually seen a similar suggestion on a photography forum. Someone had trouble with the concept of F-stops on lenses being numbered as F2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8 etc and wanted all of the camera and lens makers to start using the decimal system. It is the digital age after all...

@Gav - great job. Love the string ferrules myself, and you've done a great job drilling the holes. Would be a nervous job for me! Having said that, I've got to start a tele build so I can try this too! This is one sweet axe you are creating. I'm loving every detail.
