That grain is just insane...looking great Wokka.
Interesting how the darker ash is turning it more green.
Wonder if the blue will come through with more coats?

Hey Wokka. Man that looks good. I've got a question for you. I'm on my second build but neither of them have had the grain pop out like this. Looking at some other builds I see stunningly strong grain too (eg Tim's Cthulu). Is that because of the timber type or is there something else you do first to accentuate it?

It looks like a watermelon in the first pic! Yum!

But very nice grains!

@ Lawry --> its the ash bodies that make the grain really pop, you built a RC-1 didn't you, which is basswood has a much more subtle grain that doesn't pop any where near as much. What model kit is your second build ? I'm just using the Pit Bull sandpaper 180, 220 and 240 grit before wudtoning and giving it a light steel wool 0000 fine between coats.
@ SimpleOne --> haha yes is does look like a watermelon, maybe that will be the guitars name if it remains green after more azure coats !

cheers Pablo, once you get all the glue and filler out they are great bodies for sure. Would be awesome if Pit Bull could do ash body blanks !

Both my builds are basswood. With this in mind I think I'll try an ash kit next (there is always a 'next'). The results you guys get are amazing. Thanks.

yes Lawry these ash kits are fantastic, the photos don't do the grain justice. You have seen results from all the IB-5 basses that have been built by the forum members, and now the ST, TL and EX kits will start popping up on the build diaries soon.

Coming along nicely Woks.

Go on, throw a red scratch plate on it. You know you want to. Then it will be the ultimate watermelon guitar. :)

Haha Dan, I have got a red tortoise shell scratch plate I might see how it looks. Next update I'll post a photo to get forum votes. I've been calling it the Watermelon axe so it is highly likely

Man Wokka, the grain on that beast is so strongly defined that it's hard to believe its real. It looks fantastic!

The body colour looks a little too washed out for the red pickguard in the 1st pic, but it looks good in the 2nd pic... the green looks deeper and works with the red. But, the blue on the headstock clashes a bit with the red and green combo. I think if you want to use the red on green for the body you may need to try to tweak the headstock and either fade the blue or try to get it more green to match the Ash (or keep trying to make the body more blue).

How many base coats have you put on the Ash?

wokkaboy
09-11-2013, 10:16 PM
Hey Scott I haven't got to the base coats yet on the body so 4 deep color coats only. Thanks for your view. I'm hoping a few base coats will make the body a bit more Blue we'll see what happens

Hey Woks, that grain looks amazing.

Unfortunately the grain in the one I'm doing for Serena is not as pronounced. Also I had a heck of a job getting the glue and filler out without doing too much damage to the wood. I used a small wire brush and very course sandpaper, but managed to rip the wood a little bit, any other suggestions for dealing with it?

cheers
rob

Hey Robin that's a bummer. Sounds like more sanding or if you have ripped too much away you may need to fill with timbermate. Can you please email a photo in this thread?

robin
10-11-2013, 08:02 AM
Thanks Woks, but I stopped before it got too bad and the old iphone camera doesn't pick it up too well. But there is still a bit more glue to go.

The main problem is that I was probably too heavy handed with the wire brush and I started to rip out the softer 'grain' areas, and leaving the harder wood pretty much alone. I've sanded so much now that I'm afraid that I will start polishing the wood :(

I don't really want to grain fill as Serena has her heart set on a matte/satin black guitar and as the grain probably won't be visible I was trying to keep the grain 'texture' as the main feature.

Not to worry, I have contingency plans.

And the watermelon is looking cool.

Got 1st base coat on lastnight, after 4 deep coats the colour is still green so no point going any more deep coats. The steel wooling between coats is paying off, its getting bit of a natural gloss which is good, hopefully less top gloss but it will more than likely get at least 5 top gloss coats. Hope to enter this for December GOTM and weather is warming up in Perth so should be doable.

cheers Gav, yes pity the grain on the back isn't on the front !

robin

Gee Woks, that does look nice.

The only problem with a traditional Strat is that the Pickguard takes up half of the front of the body. Not a problem when they are painted but with grain feature like that its almost a crime to hide it.

wokkaboy
15-11-2013, 04:57 AM
yes agreed Rob, but as previous photos show with the red pickguard there's enough nice grain on these bodies that's visible.

Finally dusted off the ash strat and applied the 3rd base coat. Next coat will be gold or silver highlights then onto the top gloss coats

Nice one Wokka. The blue/green is a good match for the red pickguard.
