View Full Version : Site Suggestion - Suppliers

Hi Adam,

I've noticed that a number of builders (especially those starting out on their first builds) often have trouble locating suppliers and/or services in their particular area. Maybe a listing of suppliers that have been used PBG folk might be handy thing for new builders as well as old.

I don't know whether it'd be better as a forum section or a site-page (I can see the pro's and co's of each approach), but something that covers anything from decal-printers and "bits and pieces" suppliers through to full-music suppliers and local luthiers/guitar techs (and all points in between) ... maybe something that can be looked up by either item or state/locale.

I know there's a lot of the info already within the forum's pages but it's spread out over a myriad of different topics - but centralising this info should make it a lot easier to get to.

Anyway just a thought.

Hey Dingobass you forgot to mention your favourite shop of all time - the big green building that starts with 'Bun......' I better stop there before relegated to the naughty corner ! haha

My (Ex) next door neighbor now works for them, he never did make a good plumber tradesman... now he can just walk around the store n chit chat as he feels the needs to do so... ROFL... (I actually like the fella...)
The sad part really is the bloke who bought his house must be a greenie as he does not mow his lawn or weed his garden..or he's the laziest thing that god put breath into..He's even had a blue tongue lizard take up residence in his back yard, by the fence as I have seen it come into my little veggie patch to bask.. lol...

I have used realtone, the bloke is helpful, great customer service and you can pickup the phone and get advice on the products.. also Postage is very reasonable and is fast delivery.

I think we're all agreed on our "distaste" for the "big green b-b-b-barn" and its SuperHyperMegaGigaMart approach to tools and hardware (although I have found them quite a cheap and reliable source of consumables such as metho, turps etc ... and rags! especially when Vinnies is closed on Sundays! :D )

But my original idea was just for an info source (list) for new-builders to refer to - and not only on the parts suppliers side-of-things but also (especially) on the luthier/guitar tech services front. While I've had quite a bit of traditional carpentry/cabinetmaking training and have always liked to do my own guitar services and fixes wherever possible, there's always been those odd problems/questions that have been beyond my ability and required a true expert - and I'd be surprised if it wouldn't the same for any of the new builders at some point.

And no matter how well one describe the problem (and get a descriptive response) sometimes you just need to be able to have it front of you and go "Why is it doing THIS?" for someone to be able to accurately say "Oh, that's because of THAT!" ... and there'd be nothing more disappointing than an otherwise fine self-made musical machine being consigned as dust-collector (ornament) because of a simple problem easily fixed for a few bucks in the hands of an expert (and learning something in the process too!) After all, a doctor might be able to give an IDEA of what ails talking over the phone or forum but won't be bale to give an exact diagnosis (let alone provide guidance of the surgical techniques, if they're required 8O )

Anyway, in that spirit (and to get back to the point), for the benefit of anyone on the east-coast here's a list of recommended specialists that years of foot-sore traipsing and mis-spent dollars (from myself and fellow muso's) has helped put together ... (if there's other worthy additions that anyone knows I'd love to add them to my list!)

SYDNEY - Guitar Techs
- PIERS CROCKER - Guitar and Bass luthier extraodinare! (especially with basses) ... superb work and true expert who knows his stuff. Finicky and not cheap but well worth it if you can get into his waiting list (met Ian Moss there one day getting some work done)
- ALAN RIGG - used to do all the luthier work for Jackson's Rare Guitars, nice bloke and great work
- CLIVE (?) and his daughter BRON - great guitar tech, a mine of information and a top bloke. Works out of Big Music's storefront (Crows Nest)
- FRANK GRUBISA - Guitar luthier and reknowned for his amazing custom work and slick paint jobs and finishes (especially relic-ing)
- GERARD GILET - acoustic (mostly) luthier makes some damned fine instruments that sell and re-sell for some very good prices!

SYDNEY - Amp Techs
- MARTIN KELL - Legendary Amp Tech & "Electronics Einstein" ... able to bring the sweetest tones possible out of anything with electrical circuitry. From vintage tubes to solid state - a wiring genius.

MELBOURNE - Guitar Techs
- JAMES CARGILL - Great guitar tech (and son of legendary MERV CARGILL) and the only one of equal to STEWART MALE (RIP) who used to work on Hank Marvin's guitars

MELBOURNE - Amp Techs
- DAVE ULBRICK - truly great amp-man but I don't think is available any longer for "other" amp work having set up his own amp company sending his goods world-wide Ulbrick Sound (Dandenong), but certainly worth checking out for his amps and the off-chance that he might fix yours.
- IAN RUMBOLD - Aussie rocker from the '70s with decades of knowledge and experience and well-known and recommended by the Melbourne muso's. Works with a company called Sound Developments (Fitzroy - large PA systems) and is permitted to do guitar/bass amp work on-the-side through them.

Anyway, this type of info is what my original idea for a Suppliers List was about (along with parts suppliers too, of course) - people and companies we've all used and can recommended with a thumbs up :D (or not! 8O ) ... after all, not all of us are on the west-coast and have direct access to DB or Gavin (if we were they'd never be getting much work done! :D )

... when things get dire, its nice to know who to see (and who to avoid).

Matt at Bach Guitar Services is brilliant too. http://www.bachguitarservices.com.au/
