Howdy formites, been a while since I did a build diary, latest project the IC-1 the shape of this axe really intrigues me, oozes style. I gave it a light sand, and plans after seeing VH2580's IC-1 is a metallic blue solid finish with the southern cross stars, early days but planning to prime the body Saturday, been a while since I painted an axe so I'm expecting a good stint in the naughty corner, see you there Gav, you seem to be stuck there !!
Makes a change not as much sanding required for paint. OK DB I got the message already, I'll be in the naughty corner !!

Goatis, the blue paint is Holts Auto Spray Cyan blue, in the sun it gives a nice metallic look. Cost $25 from Auto One for 400g can. I used about half the can on the neck and body, so should get 2 good coats from the can, hopefully that will be enough to clear coat over

Gav, not sure what clear I'll be using. What did you use on your BC1? Have to do some research. Yer the pizza oven is awesome. We cut a guitar shape handle for wood storage door.

Wokka, I used minwax wipe-on poly for the BC-1. Main motivation there though was to let the little fella get stuck in. Worked well for him, but I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone else - it produces quite a nice shiny finish with little effort, but doesn't take to wet sanding very well. It also doesn't seem that tough, although that could well be because I didn't let it cure. Try telling a 9 year old they have to wait a month to keep building!! ;).

cheers,
Gavin.

Hi Gav, thanks for the info on the clear you used, I ended up reading this information on your build diary. Think I'll steer away from wipe on clear, already applied about 35 coats of tru oil on 3 builds (thats just earnt me another week in the naughty corner !!). I'll look for an automotive clear can, they seem to be thicker and apply better with less runs than standard cheaper spray cans

Auto clear sounds like a great idea. I may well do the same for my RC-1 as the surface is going to be quite uneven.

cheers,
Gavin.

yer no worries Gav, I'll keep my build diary updated when I get to the clear stage, won't get any work done this weekend with Bathurst 1000 on, and I'm going to airbrush the southern cross stars on the body before the clear. Please let me know if you get to the clear stage on the RC before me !

Got 3 light colour coats on, starting to get the finish I'm after, bit more light sanding and another 2 coats should lock it in before southern cross and clear

15-10-2013, 02:37 AM
yer cheers Darren, very happy with the colour choice, there are so many different shades of automotive blue so I think any of them would look good on the iceman shape.
Probably give it one more body and neck colour coat, and I've ordered blank stencil sheet to cut out the southern cross stars, hoping that arrives end of this week, but I'm away following weekend so looks like I won't finish this until December GOTM

got the stencil for the southern cross cut lastnight, have a mate is a signwriter he cut it onto some vinyl. I didn't take any photos but hope to get final blue coat on neck and body tonight and plan to air brush the stars on Saturday so should have some photos to post later Saturday. Then onto clear coats !

Hi Robin, there are photos of my camphor scratch builds in the 'non pitbull gear' section under 'Brian May red special'. The marri body on the right of the Iceman still needs a couple more coats of you know what - to the naughty corner I go (again !)

got about 5th coat of clear, the photos don't really show the gloss although it isn't as glossy as I'd like so couple more coats should be enough, then a nice polish

Looks awesome Wokka. How's the edge around the stars? Were you able to completely cover the boundary between additional paint coats in clear for that ultra-flat mirror finish?

cheers,
Gavin.

Hi Gav,
I had a bit of a blowout on the weekend, applied a clear coat when the body was too hot (was 33 degrees ambient and probably hotter in the workshop) and the clear bubbled/cracked in parts. I was hoping this was going to be the last coat of clear. Sanded it down wet and dry for about 2 hours and there's still more sanding to get the cracked clear out. I'll have another crack at it soon, but my LP-1 kit arrived yesterday so I'll probably start that !
The clear was fairly smooth and was getting flat around the white stars.

14-11-2013, 02:25 AM
Hey Wokka, What kind of clear are you using? I use Polyurethane clears all the time and even 40 degrees wouldn't crack the surface but, too much clear would. For auto painting a thick coat of anything would not be ideal as it is too brittle and has no flex. For what I paint (and guitars wouldn't be vastly different) I never go above 3 coats of clear in one session and then, next day or two, sand smooth and give it 1 or 2 more coats (depending on how glass like the first coat is).

wokkaboy
14-11-2013, 02:45 AM
Hey Johnny, thanks for your advice, I sprayed about 6 or 7 light coats of automotive acrylic clear (at least 24 hours between coats) but I gave the body light steel wool coats in between. In hindsight I should have wet and dry'd in between coats. I ran out of the automotive clear so put 2 coats of a cheaper poly spray can (can't remember the brand or details) and the 1st coat went on fine but the second coat cracked. Any ideas ?

johnnychronic
15-11-2013, 01:08 PM
oooo.. I think that is most likely the failure right there. Some kind of reaction when mixing formulas; using two different companies paint system (one was acrylic and the other poly) has had BAD results more than enough times to warrant taking a chance on it. One system has rapidly shrunk the other causing it to split.

Andyport
15-11-2013, 08:50 PM
Totally agree Johnny...using 2 differing paint types (acrylic then poly), 2 different drying rates = problems.

sanded off the paint as the front had a crack and the clear was bubbling, so went back to the old faithful wudtone, put a coat of azure lagoon on top/sides then went over with dark onyx after I saw Pablo's colour scheme on his IB1. Will sand back a bit more and put another coat on later

Hey, I'm an influence! Hopefully not a bad one. It's a shame you lost your original finish, I was really digging it. Can't wait to see how this turns out though.

wokkaboy
10-12-2013, 06:31 AM
Hey Pablo, yes I loved the colours on your IB-1. Was disappointed I lost the southern cross on metallic blue paint look but I'll try that later with more practice and maybe a spray gun system. It was bloody hard work sanding it all off.
I'll sand this down a bit more to get a mainly dark onyx colour on the front. Still got to sand the blue paint off the neck

So, does this count as another build?

robin
11-12-2013, 12:26 AM
Bumma about losing the original design Warren, I was liking that. But I'm sure that whatever you come up with will look as good as all the other guitars you've produced.

Can't wait to see it hanging on the clothes line. lol.

cheers

wokkaboy
11-12-2013, 01:15 AM
@ Lawry, its not really another build but started from scratch, it hasn't been entered in GOTM so its sort of another build different colours/finish
@ Robin, I sanded off the front and was planning to do the front the same then the clear started peeling off the sides/back so it was too hard to remove the clear without the blue paint, so I was over solid paint, it had to go. Wasn't a light decision. I'll attempt a southern cross axe in the future when I get a more professional spray paint gun. So many hours and coats went into that axe.

I'd forgotten all about this one, Woks. I really like how you've 'dirtied up' the blue. To me it has a really glacial look about it. I'm impressed. Fantastic, man.
