While I'm still waiting for the pickups to come for my ST-1, I've started on a new project. A muesli tin lap steel.

Sorry about the lighting in the pics.

Nice, I have been researching cigar box guitars for the last few days with the intention of building a few to give as christmas presents. I will follow this thread eagerly.

Thats a great idea to send Carmen a pic when it's finished. Maybe I will get a free box of muesli. Lol.

I'm just designing it as I go. I'm going to chamber the neck and semi recess the fretboard. What's the common scale length for a lap steel, I'm working off a 25' scale. Actually I might go and google that right now.

Hey Dan,
great idea to build a lap steel, we got our first interest in building axes with cigar box guitars, had a ball and still plan to go back and make a few more. I built a lap steel out of a chunk of jarrah, haven't even finished it, I worked on a Gibson scale length 25.5 inches but you can work on whatever scale you like. It was my 1st routed solid body so a scary experience. I haven't marked the frets and need to lower the bridge, which is some angle bracket I found. Will finish this and may give it a Seasick Steve look. If you have never heard of Seasick Steve youtube search him, he even plays a 1 string CBG.

also included some CBG's we've made. If you got any questions fire away !

Here are some pics of the basic construction. It's a bit more over engineered than a regular cigar box guitar, but It should work.

looks good Dan, nothing wrong with over engineering it, the neck and tin box should be solid as a rock
What are you planning to do with the heatstock and tuners ? a tapered down headstock ?

Probably a tapered headstock, or maybe a step down. I may even go 6 in line, I already have a spare set of a strat.

I'm expecting some new toys from the postie, a new bosch trimmer. So expect every edge in sight to profiled, lol.
Once the trimmer arrives I can start rebating the fretboard into the neck, rout the sound cavity in the neck, and also the pickup cavity. That's what the center cross member is for ,mounting the pickup.

And the timber I'm using is Tassie Oak.

cool sounds like you have planned out the design well Dan, love your workbench !

new toys are always good, look forward to seeing the edges after the bosch trimmer fires up

you just putting in a humbucker, input jack and volume control ?

I'm putting in a mini humbucker, volume and tone. The output jack will go on the end where the lid goes, so you have to take the tin lid off to reveal the output jack.

I've ordered a bridge and nut set off ebay, black nickel.
