Enter your finished guitar here to be judged for August Pit Bull Guitars Guitar of the Month.

Remember:
One guitar per member per month (if we have more than 8 entries)
It must be a Pit Bull Guitars kit (mods and upgrades are ok)
We need 4 photos: full guitar shot from the front, close up of the body finish, shot of the back of the guitar and close up of the headstock (please no brand name logos)
Post your photos in this thread or email them to adam@pitbullguitars.com.
Competition for August closes 31 July 2013.
Special Guest Judge to be announced later this month.

Adam, when are you releasing the name of this month's judge? Also the LP is almost done, so I'm 100% in this comp!

Pest, rumour has it that Les Paul himself might make an appearance.....

I think we might try a judging panel of anonymous Forum members who don't have a guitar in the comp. I've run out of "celebrity" friends to call on.

wokkaboy
15-07-2013, 02:45 PM
that's a good option Adam, can't always have a celebrity available to judge the comp !

keloooe
15-07-2013, 09:04 PM
Wow, this will be fun then Adam!!! Will they be revealed after the comp???

wokkaboy
16-07-2013, 12:58 AM
yes maybe Pest if you don't finish the LP by end of the month you could be one of the judges ! Wonder how a panel would agree on the best entry. Presume the only way is each judge gives each entry a score out of 10 and most total scores wins - could have the 1st shared GOTM winner !

Pest what happened to the Roos on the weekend ? I would have got 9 out of 9 tips if Roos beat the Lions !

keloooe
16-07-2013, 01:07 AM
I know... I know... but getting to school today was tough.... the first 3 people i saw: "CHOKERS!!!"... I was there when we beat them in April though!!!

The chances of me finishing the LP are still high, I found that the nut is wayyyyyy to high for my playing style....

And I agree with Woks, get everyone to give each "section" of the judging out of 10, maybe average them out?

wokkaboy
16-07-2013, 01:15 AM
yer quite a few kits I've built the nut slot is way too high making the 1st few frets difficult.

Sure Adam has thought out how a panel would give scores for GOTM but may be easier for each judge to give each entry a score out of 10 for overall appearance.
I'd be keen to be a judge if there's a month I don't enter

keloooe

I know, I would like to be a part of this great competition!

maybe in a couple of months Pest, me and DB can be on the GOTM judging panel. But if these ash bodies are avaiable late August I'll be buying at least a ST-1 and EX-1 kit so I'll be entering for a while !

keloooe
16-07-2013, 01:26 AM
Haha, yeah, I want to see the price of the Ash Srats!!! I *might* use the Ash body for the StratoPester... Maybe...

Nice work Robin! We need a bass to take out a win! This could be that bass!

robin
16-07-2013, 06:32 AM
I don't know Gav, it's got 5 strings so maybe it won't be classified as a "real" bass.

Anyway, it was great fun building it. To see it slowly revealing its true beauty was exciting and by far my most rewarding build yet. I'm a happy chappy however it goes.

Cheers

Here's one from me - the Reluctant Relic.

ST-1, '62 re-issue replica.

This instrument is all PB kit hardware, except;

- Vintage split machine heads
- Bullet truss-rod nut
- Hotrail bridge p-up

I am surprised by how authentic this instrument looks, despite the new plastics and bright-work. In person it would pass for a vintage guitar that has been re-fitted. Although a real '62 would have black primer showing through, not grey. This wasn't originally going to be a relic finish, so I can live with it.

For those that don't know; this body has a problem with separating blocks - showing through cracks in the paintwork. So I abandoned the high polish enamel finish and rushed it through as a relic'd piece.

Plays quite well, even with only an express set-up and rough intonation adjustment.

I will try to post some better pics (I'm a bit camera challenged at the moment), sadly these ones don't really show the relic wear which is quite subtle.

Cheers Rob.

Just seen your entry and I have got to say it gets my vote. That bass looks like a +$2000 instrument - I don't think many people would pick it as a kit guitar.

robin
17-07-2013, 08:12 PM
Thanks Ray,

I must admit that the IB-5 kit was exceptional quality, so that helps with the final result. But having said that, your ST-1 certainly doesn't look like a $100 kit either. Well done mate.

Thanks Corey for the compliments, really appreciate it mate.

I have two basses of my own, on old Fender J and a newer Ibanez SDGR (both 4 string) and this IB-5 looks and sounds better than either of them. To get a kit of this quality and at the price is amazing.

What's up guys,

Just carved and finished a new St-1 guitar kit so I thought I might enter in into the August comp, I haven't used any stain just true oil to finish the body and neck to get a natural look, I've incorporated spirals (koru) into the body and head stock which represent growth, peace and tranquility among other things which I think fits it well with the growth of learning the instrument in its different forms and feeling peace and tranquility while playing it, hope you like it and look forward to the feedback.

The scores are in...

Special thanks to our esteemed judging panel. I have to say they all put in a great effort, scoring and commenting on each guitar. Thanks guys.

I asked the judges to consider the following and give a score for each guitar:

• How well has the body and neck been prepared
• Is the choice of finish for the style of guitar appropriate
• How well has the finish been applied
• How well have all the hardware, pickups, etc, been installed
• Does it have the “Wow Factor”?

Also, I asked them to think about which guitar would you head straight for if you came across it in a guitar shop.

So, here's the results:

First, the Runners Up (in Alphabetical Order):

Bassguy's EX-1 in Aramanthine

"What a mad looking axe! Amaranthine and the nickel hardware sets it off nicely. Good effort on the numbered inlay..not easy."

"Well done, Bassguy. Your application of the finish is top shelf. A really nice touch with the inlay too, I am sure the young guy is going to love this axe. Hetfield would want this Axe!"

Brett's ST-1

"A nicely executed Guitar. The finish is great and the personal touch with the inlay gives this Axe a different dimension. I like the change of pick guard, my only criticism is that it is not fitted as well as it could be. Love the colour and the application is very well done. Keep up the great work!"

"A very sophisticated looking axe. I like the contrast between the colour of the body and the grey pickguard. If it sounds as good as it looks...you have a great guitar."

Pest's LP-1 In Reverse Wudtone Burst

"This has been a long time coming! Great to see the Pest LP finally done. You have put this together really well. For a first build you have really excelled and you should be very proud of this Axe.
In 20 years time I hope you will look at the PLP and have many good memories of the build, the friends you have made on the forum and the knowledge you have gained.

"The Pestistence Award definitely goes to Callum. Everyone enjoyed watching this axe come to life. Keep it up Pest"

"A great effort for a busy young man. Original to say the least."

Ricmo's TL-1TB

"I am loving this Guitar! The whole Rockabilly theme works so well on this Tele.
This is one Guitar I would make a bee line for if I saw it hanging on the wall in a shop..... And I don't even play Guitar! Great job, well done. There is nothing I don't like about this Axe."

"I'm a fan of the look of a good Tele and this one is no exception. The colour is perfect fit for it. The combination of the P90 on the neck and Humbucker on the bridge would make it a versitile axe..nice work."

/Wokka's SGD-612 in Amaranthine.

"What a Beast! You are really improving with every build. This one is very well put together with much attention paid to detail. The only thing that I feel you could have done is to apply more deep colour, I would have liked to see the Amaranthine really dark and sultry..

"What a beast of a guitar! The Amaranthine finish looks great combined with the nickel hardware. The work required to wire this puppy up is worthy of a mention...not for feint hearted. Amazing job..well done!"

"Really daunting challenge to build this. Impressive effort."

So... now for the top 3:

In 3rd Place, Rhay's Telic ST-1

"For a kit that had issues in the beginning...im very impressed with how it turned out. The "played" look combined with the sophisticated colour suits it down to the ground. It screams PLAY ME!..."

"Love this, Fab looking guitar, great finish."

"Talk about the save of the century!
I admire your perseverance with this build, just goes to show what you can do when you put in the time and effort. I like what you have done with this build, it is a subtle relic. So much nicer than any I have seen being sold in music shops."

"Great effort. A nice solid while but for the relic'd part! Looking forward to see what you do next."

In 2nd Place, Marcus's Carved ST-1

"Really creative, different, nicely presented guitar. Wow factor definitely present."

"This is an amazing looking original guitar. A work of art."

"A very unique looking guitar with a great finish. The detail in the carvings is amazing! I like that the carving continues to the backside of the body. Amazing skill....Great effort."

"Wow. That is some Axe you got going there!
The execution of the carving is top notch.
I would have liked to see you go that extra mile and use a colour finish and perhaps swap out the neck dots for Paua shell inlays... Next time :) I would defy any one not to want to go straight to this Axe and let rip a few killer riffs :)"

And the winner of Pit Bull Guitars August Guitar of the Month is:

Robin's IB-5 in Walnut Stain and Tru Oil finish. "Bec's Bass" (Lucky Bec!)

"Beautifully put together Bass... I like the personal touch with the headstock logo and its importance to you.
I would want to pick this Bass up if I saw it in a shop."

"This is one slick looking bass. The finish has been very well executed and it looks amazing. Good enough to eat...enough said."

"Wow love this bass what a finish. I would make a bee line for this in a shop."

"Just sensational..."

"Gorgeous looking bass, I would hang this as a piece of art"

Thanks everyone for being involved and keep up these amazing builds. Bring on GOTM September!

Well done everyone - awesome spread of guitars this month. Absolutely agree with Robin's Bass winning though, it's just a fantastic thing to look at, infact it's made me put one of those bass kits on my 'future build' list. Congrats!

For me, the judges were the standout of this months competition! ;) ok, ok....just kidding!
Really great submissions and everyone who submitted their projects have the right to be proud of what they accomplished. Well done to Robin on the first 5 string to take out the comp!

Congrats Robin, I agree with all the comments for all the builds!! If I were judging, it would be a hard time choosing one guitar as the winner, we are all winners, even if we don't enter GOTM because we have all done something that not all people can do very often (or at all), thank you to the judges, and let's hope for a higher GOTM bar next month!!!

I'd like to thank the Members of the the Motion Picture Acada ................... Oops, wrong speech.

Seriously, I am quite humbled to crack this one. The standard is becoming so high, and in my opinion every guitar this month was a winner, and every builder should be justly proud of their efforts. Well done guys. Although I definitely had an advantage with that gorgeous Ash body. Thanks Adam.

Just a quick thanks to Judges. Who would want that job?

And thanks to all for your generous comments and encouragement. This community is an awesome example of how Forums should work, and we can all be proud of that.

Cheers and thanks

Thanks again guys for all the generous comments, I really do appreciate them all.

I know it's a well worn platitude, but every guitar this month deserved to win. Every guitar submitted this month was unique and every builder can be proud of their efforts. The judges had an unenviable task of of choosing just one, I was lucky enough to be that one.

Guys, can we please be mindful of the forum rules when it comes to commercial interests. There is nothing wrong with sharing information with forum members when it comes to retail outlets or similar companies selling non-competing products with PBG. But to be fair to all the members we cannot allow members to use the PBG forum to promote their own financial interests. You will hopefully appreciate that neither DB nor myself advertise our acoustic or electric guitars or bass guitars on PBG as being for sale...
