HI all,
I haven't done a build diary for a while and thought this new baby was well worthy. Took delivery today and did a mock build and it all fit together quite well. The only small glitch was the pup routes for the 6 string side were a bit narrow, but this won't be an issue to make a bit wider.
Might start some sanding to see how the basswood body shows up, grain looks pretty good.
Am planning to finish this baby (well its not that small !) In aramanthine and have my fingers crossed DB gets a delivery on Friday.
PLanning a traditional shape for both headstocks.
Ok time for some sanding !

Hey Wokka, that looks great. I'm not really familiar with the Gibson Double Neck, but something I noticed when taking the photos, there were three 3 way switches (and I could only see one switch hole). Anyone know what that's all about?

wokkaboy
12-06-2013, 01:25 PM
Hi Adam,
Yes the other 2 switches go on the scratchplate between pickups and they must control which neck is active. I'm yet to find a wiring diagram but think this is going to take several hours to solder up correctly.
With the correct diagram should be straight forward

Ahh, ok, I was wondering how they switch between the 6 and 12. When you find a wiring diagram, please flick me a copy and I'll use it to draft a PBG version.

Cheers DB I'll check out the site tomoz and no worries Adam when I find a good wiring diagram I'll email it through.
Finding out there's a bit more sanding to do than normal, but have fallen in love with this axe already !

Only had time for a light sand but check out the work that has gone into this body, so much routing and drilling holes, it's a work of art. Would hate to know how many hours would take to get to this stage by hand !

Man, that looks so cool! That's going on my list for sure!

Yeah that is a serious piece of work there. My brother has planted a seed that he wants me to build him an SG...I wonder would he want a double neck?

I'll watch this build with interest.

haha you are funny Gav, it's got one body and one input jack so I'm calling it one guitar. It's going to take a while to build with 2 necks and 2 day curing time for aramanthine, so more than likely will be my August GOTM entry.
I suppose it's like the 2 headed - one body Tasmanian - is this one or 2 people ? haha

oh and big congratulations Gav for cracking the 1000 posts and beating the Pest to the post ! You could have built another acoustic by now if you kept the forum replies down but all forum members appreciate your feedback and help !

It's probably just me, but I always think that the 12 string neck should go on the bottom, and the 6 string on top. I bet the necks aren't interchangable though as I imagine the 12 string neck would have to be a bit wider.

wokkaboy
13-06-2013, 02:18 AM
Hi Fretworn,
I haven't tried swapping necks but pretty sure the 12 string is the same width as the 6 string, depends if the neck pocket routes are the same size. I've never thought about reversing them could make this a very unique 6/12 SG !
Think it would look a bit odd with the longer headstock below the shorter 6 string headstock
I've never played a twin neck axe so will see how much the top neck gets in the way of the bottom neck

Hi Wokka

Watching your progress with great interest.
I'm thinking of maybe doing a double neck some time down the track.
My guess with the light red & purple would be no harm done, after all purple is red & blue.
Nightwish (who I actually like a lot) did an album named "Aramanth" just FYI.
Should look spectacular on your guitar.

Ok the exciting part 1st deep coat of aramanthine after couple more hours of final sanding, I'm very happy with the results and the colour, this is a different thicker wudtone and first coat you have to spread it quickly to avoid leaving blotched marks but a great challenge. Will post photos of the back turned out different to I thought, I put a base coat of cherry flamenco on and the purple barely soaked in, but think I'll still run with it

Oh and another thing I forgot to mention as far as I know I'm the first person on the Australian region to apply this colour !
So here's the contrast of the back, a coat of cherry flamenco was applied 5 days ago, I thought the colour would have been much darker, forum members shall I keep this colour on the back or sand back and start again ? I think with 2 more deep coats it will come up as a dark brown colour, the contrast between the purple and dark red look good to me with some purple streaks that soaked in the back.
Vote please, keep it or sand back to a purple back ?

Sorry Wokka, the cherry's gotta go - that amaranthine is too nice to miss out on the full axe being the full purple. The top's looking hot though - DB looks like you'll be getting familiar with amaranthine over the coming weeks / months...

Hi all,
thanks for your input forum members, I made up my mind about 3 seconds after posting photos of the back that its got to be sanded back, I really thought the cherry basecoat would give the purple a darker colour but it did the opposite. It's got to go tonight will orbital sander it off then hand sand it to how it was.
Here's some pics I took this morning in natural light, should post photos of the back in ara tonight. Should work out well this colour needs 2 days curing time so I can alternate between top/sides and back applying next coats.
Oh and DB we've been spelling the colour wrong - its amaranthine so I'll call it ama for short from now !

The reason this did not work is because the Cherry is a "warm" temperature colour. This means it is a red based colour.

The Ama is a "cool" temperature colour, that is it is based on blue.

When you mix a warm temperature colour with a cool temperature colour you end up with mud! :P

I knew that Art School was going to come in handy one day :)

@ Maxaxe --> yes the colour in photos depends on lighting and angle but trust me in the flesh amaranthine is purple.
Here's pics of 3rd base coat after 3 deep coats, I'm happy with the depth of the colour, trying to decide whether gold or silver hightlights will improve the look. Thoughts Bass Guy or DB on highlights ?
Anyway got 2 weeks to get top coats and bolted together, a big challenge is ahead assembling this baby, but I'm up for it !

True to form I am going to do another replica, classic EDS in cherry - but haven't decided if I will burst it or just go with a flat finish. Struggling to find the tail-pieces at this point, but got all the other hardware sorted.

Here's what I'm aiming for, it's a mid-70's;

Hi Tim, if you post your email address on this thread, I'll send an email to Gav so he can reply with the wiring diagram. When I've got your address I'll let you know and you can edit the post and remove your email address if you like

Sure is a small world DB. Got silver highlights on lastnight and a top gloss coat on tonight. No point taking photos with a Flash but will post some pics in daylight on the weekend. Silver highlights look great on the ama purple!

Come to this late, but I've got both of the schematics too. The 3-sw Epiphone and 2-sw Gibson, if you're stuck?

However I just looked at the switches supplied and they are all single pole, and all appear to be on/on/on (x-over). That's fine for the p-up selection but not for the neck selector, that should be on/off/on.

Needless to say this does not match the EP or Gib spec., but can be made to work. However it might require using ground-switching, which seriously raises the complexity of the cct - given the presence of so many easily contactable earthed objects on the un-selected neck.

However it can be made to work.

Wokka wiring on my twin neck is well on its way now .I have found there is alot of wires running through the pup cavities, something we spoke about today .so what I have done is to trench out along base of cavitys so I can recess the wires then I will shield over top . Have chucked in a photo (I hope)mmm maybe not anyway you get the idea....now this is were someone tells me one its already been done or two this cant be done because of something...LOL

TIM!!!!!

No mate! :) You dont want to sheild over the top of the wiring unless you wrap the wires in shielding first!!! The wires act as an antennae and by placing them outside of the shielding arrangement negates shielding in the first place! :)

Hey Tim,

Would you mind sending me a copy of the wiring diagram you're working from? Even though mine will be a 2-switch it might help me decide which way to go with the final build.

rhay71@gmail.com

Also are your switches all on/on/on or is one an on/off/on?

Cheers.

Gav (as we'd all expect) is quite right, unless you use shielded cables, but it looks like there is a few single-insulated ones in the loom.

Hey Tim,
wiring was hard work, I still got some small tweaks but happy how it's bolted together

2 more pics. Note to Ray, the neck backing plate holes didn't match, the holes pre-drilled in the body were way too narrow for the plate.
Otherwise it came together well, I thoroughly recommend aramanthine

My strings are STILL stretching, so the SGD-612 should take a looooooonnnnggg time to stretch out completely!

pablopepper
30-07-2013, 10:45 PM
Hey Callum, you know you can stretch out strings as part of your string changing process right? If done right your guitar should stay in tune from then on.

keloooe
30-07-2013, 11:18 PM
Yeah, but I forgot to do it this time :P
the strings on the LP arent stretching much, they are nearly stretched out completely, so I should be able to intonate it easier soon!

Hey Pablo,
yes stringing it up took almost an hour, as it's my first 12 string axe and you can't fit the tuner winder on the middle 9 pegs (6 treble strings of the 12 string and 3 bass strings of the 6 string). Plus the 12 strings that come with the kit aren't labelled so I've put them on with some guess work with the gauges, but have a pack of D'darrio 12 strings so could see what gauge went where.
I'll run it in with the cheap strings and put decent ones on after that

Hey Dan,
yes the reflection of part of the 4D Guitars sign was intentional. A few builds ago I jagged the reflection in a photo and now line it up
