My Ricky is almost painted at this stage. ot Auburn back and sides and Golden Rod top.
I didn't like the thin cap so I made it look thicker by cutting a templated 'f' and inserting it into the existing one on the Ricky.

Cool. Really striking contrast between the face and in-dent/sides.

You'll have to show us how to make the cap look thicker around the "f".

Sounds good to me! Has yours still got its frets?

The fretboard on this one was sensational. Set up to do the fret job, did all the markings, gave the fret a soft run with the block and it was done! Reckon some one at the factory must have known what they were doing!

Maybe a subtle tortoise shell to carry through the colour from the back and sides etc? Perhaps do some colour tests in Photoshop,

My Riccy also had an excellent fretboard. Misy have been a good batch.

Beautiful Gav! Even Tortoise shell pup surrounds! Much work to get the scratchplate right?

The tortoise shell was all shaped and modeled from a single sheet! Enjoyable to do actually!

Well, there goes the bar up another notch.

I know I'm old and old fashioned, but how did anything that beautiful ever go out of fashion.

Lovely job Gav. Well done

How'd ya do the pup surrounds?

Thanks for the comments. DB set the challenge on the Ricci's and led by his example. This has been a labour of love for sure! Agree with Robin that these are beautiful guitars. Maybe we can bring them back into style with our examples?
This one in particular required some work to make the 'f' hole thicker, to shape the headstock and layer it. Cutting the double layered pickguard to shape and making the truss rod cover(i defy the judges to miss it!) :)
Got some Zebra Golden Age pickups from StewMac to compliment the GoldenRod and the Tortoise Shell has perfect shade of yellow in it too! The pickup surrounds were cut on a scroll saw. The inside cut accomplished by drilling a hole in the centre, threading the saw blade through the hole and re-attaching the blade to the saw. The inside is then cut out.
Used the supplied surrounds to drill the holes to attach the pickup and fasten the surrounds to the guitar body. Drill press assists with required precision!

The Ricky looks absolutely fantastic Gav. You keep churning our awesome builds! Yet another kit for my shortlist.
Any tips on how to shape the edge of the pickguard material to get the nice 3-ply showing through?

BTW, how do the Golden Age pickups sound?
I have been thinking about a set of GFS Liverpools when I build mine.

cheers,
Gavin.

Shaping the pickguard primarily with the scroll saw and then used 120 through to 320 sand paper held at a 45degree angle. Seemed to work pretty well.

The golden age Pups from SM are fantastic. Cheap as, and sound as good as anything else that is two to three times the price! I think DB stuck some Liverpools on one of Adams's guitars. Sounded brilliant!

Gav, a quick question I'd you don't mind. The pickups and routed cavities on the kit look thinner than standard humbuckers. Can you confirm this?
Do you know if these are so-called "mini-humbuckers"?

Thanks in advance,
Gavin.

They are thinner, almost P90 size.....i simply widened mine with a dremmel and a bobbin sander.
