View Full Version : DBs next project.... turning a chunk of tree into a Baritone Guitar

OK, so Miss Fiona and I went to a local salvage yard to buy some steel posts for a fence project.
When we walked in this chunk of tree caught my eye...
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3402l-IMG_1684.JPG

It is a 50mm thick slab of old Celery Top Pine.
When I rapped it it rang like a bell and I got instant wood! 8O
Needless to say it was coming home with me...

After hours of drooling and planning I have estimated that I can get five solid bodies, two composite bodies and probably four necks out of this slab.

I can hear you saying "But it is Pine DB"!
Yes it is, but when I cut the first blank off the end I found out just how dense and hard this timber is, and also remember that the very first Fender Guitars were made from Pine.

Anyhoo, now I have that special chunk of tree I have been looking for to build a Baritone Guitar out of.

Over the coming weeks I will share with you the process of turning a chunk of rough milled tree into a Guitar that Adam will want to hang on his wall! :P

Nice piece of wood DB, looking forward to seeing this build.

Must admit to being totally ignorant about baritone guitars, in fact I had to Google it to find out what it was. Geez, sometimes I just feel old :?

If Pitbull had a hardtail baritone kit, it would be something I would seriously consider for a follow up to my Tele. If I could convince the boss, that is.

Yes. If I was going to move away from the Tele shape, then the Jazz/Jag shape is kind of the way I'd lean. At one stage I did look at what it would cost to build a guitar using a Warmoth baritone conversion neck, but you'd have to be a wealthy man to go the Warmoth route for anything.

Just so happens I have the plans for a Jaguar Baritone.. Was tossing up whether to build this or modify the plans for a 4001 Riccy Bass....

OK Guys, I have decided to turn it over to you to choose what I should build.
Jaguar or Riccy?

Bass Guy

Ricky! Don't lose that number!

Go Riccy, go Riccy. The Rickenbacker has such a different look that you don't see around much.
http://guitarz.blogspot.com.au/2010/01/rickenbacker-480-guitar.html (I know its a 480, but its a 6 string, natural colour with a 4001 style body).

Adam - looks like there may be a little interest for a special order ricky bass kit??? Does such a thing exist?

keloooe

Riccy all the way DB!!!

Jaguar- 2 votes.....

Definitely Bari-Jaguar

dingobass
05-06-2013, 09:41 AM
OK. the votes are even.
Time for an executive decision...

Three builds are going to happen, Jaguar Baritone, Jaguar VI and a Riccy 4001 Bass.

First off the rank is the Jaguar Baritone.

Any word on arrival date for aramanthine DB ?

dingobass

Today I began preparing the blanks for the Baritone Jaguar.

First thing after roughing the sizes needed is to plane a flat surface onto one face.
I do this so that I can get an even thickness and a dead flat blank when I run them through the drum sander.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/w729s-IMG_1687.JPG

When I have got this done,it is over to the drum sander loaded with a 60 grit belt.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/7e65n-IMG_1689.JPG

Next up I check to see how well the two edges fit together, and if they need any adjustments I sand them with my sanding beam with 80 grit self adhesive paper attached.

wokkaboy
06-06-2013, 06:09 AM
looking good DB, that slab has got some nice grain.
Any clues to which salvage yard you found this slab ? I was going to check out some near my work

dingobass
06-06-2013, 06:10 AM
The reason I have got the blanks set this way is to accommodate the shape of the body.
I was hoping to get this beast out of a single piece, but there was a minor fault in the timber that I thought best to cut out, hence a two piece body.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/7aml7-IMG_1693.JPG

Once it is ready I glue and clamp the two pieces.
You will notice that I have the clamps on both faces. This is ensure that the join has even pressure all round.
If you don't do this you run the risk of one face developing an open joint.... Been there, done that!
Time for a ciggie, coffee and post progress :D

Been there a hundred times and this is the first time I have seen anything thick enough!

wokkaboy
06-06-2013, 06:14 AM
sweet DB, Jaguar shape looking great. Looks like that damn piano has gone and you have done some rearranging in the man cave.

sure it's all about timing finding a slab of wood thick enough at a salvage yard. Thanks for the tips, might call a few and tell them to put aside any slabs of wood 45mm or thicker

dingobass
06-06-2013, 06:16 AM
HA HA HA! yep, it went back to it's owner a few days after your last visit... Nice to have some more room in the Cave, that's for sure!

wokkaboy
06-06-2013, 06:19 AM
DB did you trace a PBG Jaguar body to get the pencilled line or have you got a template or print of the body shape.

Sounds good the piano gone you can fit 2 more spectators in the man cave or a bigger esky ! haha

dingobass
06-06-2013, 06:27 AM
I got hold of a plan from ALS in Brisvegas.
Esky?..... Beer fridge is more like it :)

Actually, I will most probably be able to fit a saw bench in now, once I have done some more re arranging....

wokkaboy

Was due to arrive yesterday, but didn't. Phone Hare and Forbes today to find out where it is. They don't know...They called the delivery service and they don't know....Starting to suspect DB may have intercepted my shipment... :) :p just kidding...put the pliers down...DB!

So when it finally arrives we will be able to try it out , but according to the info. I got it works extremely well with guitar body shaping...and that was pretty much all I want! Have invited Phil to bring his guitar bodies around this weekend to give it a run. I have some Adirondack braces to cut. Very soft wood, so I don't expect that this will be any problem for the 2HP motor this thing has!

Gavin1393

Yeah! I paid $801-90 for the Band Saw but the sales slip showed a much higher figure because someone added a Bobbin Sander as well as a whole bunch of other cool stuff.....

...that's my story and I'm sticking to it, I really should have heeded DB's warning and made sure I was supervised when I went in to Hare and Forbes.

Wish that this was true Wokka, regrettably no-one seems to know what has happened and short of making a bunch of excuses and blaming the delivery service Hare and Forbes don't seem to appreciate that this level of "F-All customer service" is not the way to endear themselves to a first-time customer....

Gavin1393

Still no real confidence in the delivery company, TOLL IPEC, they have outright lied to me and Hare and Forbes since Wednesday. they claimed to have left messages for me and that I hadnt returned their call, then they claimed they didnt have any contact details for me and that was why they hadn't called. so here's my official verdict on them...

Allrighty then... Time to get back on track :)

Template time!

First up, I cut the shape out of a 8mm ply sheet then dress it up on the bobbin sander.
Then I soak the edges with thin super glue to get them nice and hard and durable, after this I clean the profile up with my trusty Razor files and sand paper. (all of this was done whilst being supervised by the work shop quality control officer, who decided it was all too boring and needed a nanna nap)
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/58a5x-IMG_1707.JPG

The next step will be to cut out the pup rout holes.... once I have decided what I am going to load this baby with... 'Buckers or singles...Hmmmmm..

Then I made a new Neck profile template, this time I have added the length for a Baritone as well.

You can see that I have modified a two way truss rod for the Bari neck.
As Bari's are between a Guitar and Bass scale, neither truss rod size fits, so I just had to mod a Bass truss to suit.

Today I finally finished the template / routing jig.
Going for an EMG HZ for the bridge and a Golden Age hot wound single at the neck.

Will be installing a Babicz Full Contact TOM bridge and Steinberger Machine Heads on this build.

My good buddy Mr Tim, extreme metal sculptor, welded the end on my cut down Bass truss rod.

6-a-side or 3-a-side headstock. Just looking at the pictures I can visualise it with a offset 3-a-side pointy headstock. A bit like an upside down Iceman headstock.

Managed to find some time today to do some more work on the Jagitone.

Routing pup cavities, neck pocket and whilst I was at it I decided to rout the shape.. Fun....

First up, locate template so everything lines up, clamp and the drill holes 24mm deep for the pup routs.
These holes give me a place to start the rout and the depth, takes a lot of faffing about out of the job.

Pup routs to depth and the body shape cut out.

It is faster to cut the shape out on a bandsaw, but I thought this method was worth a try.
I don't think I will do it again but if you have a router this is a good way to get a nice smooth edge, saving on lots of sanding!

Next a quick check to see that the pups fit and the top routs are done!

Rule 1. Be extremely scared of the router... They are potentially dangerous tools.
I have mentioned the flying router bit that now (thankfully) resides on my neighbours roof and not in my body.

Rule 2. Be even more scared of the router as this will teach you respect for the tool. (see rule 1)

Rule 3. If you are blase about the potential life altering and physically damaging possibility of not respecting the routers ability to screw you up, see rule 1.

Rule 4. Refer to rule 1.

Ended up on the neighbours roof where it still sits to this day, as Gavin put it, plotting my demise! :)

I have also had a bit shatter, spraying small shards of Tungsten Carbide all over the place.
Note to self and everyone... DO NOT buy router bits from Bunn....stillcan'tsaythatword... or any other chain hardware store.
ALWAYS buy good quality from a specialist. They last longer and if handled with respect won't explode....

Anyhoo, moving along...

Neck Day!

First up, I mark the centre line on my chunk of Rock Maple neck blank, line up my trusty template and draw the outlines of the neck profile.

After determining where the truss rod needs to sit in the neck I get out my trusty 8mm brad point drill and wrap a piece of tape around it as a depth gauge for the routed groove.

Next up I clamp the neck blank to the trusty work mate bench, set up the router guide rail so the bit will cut down the centre line.

Let the routing begin....

I take shallow cuts as the chips fill the groove up otherwise and this can be a pain in the butt to clean out.

Once I have the groove to the correct depth, I need to widen and deepen the groove at the headstock end to accept the adjusting thingy housing.

When this is done, the truss rod sits flush with the top of the neck blank.

Now is a good time for a router bit installation 101.

As you can see in this picture, I have unscrewed the collet completely.
This is to show how far you should have the shank of the router bit seated.

The shank protrudes at least 5mm from the bottom of the collet jaws.
This bit is staying put!

dingobass

Headstock and final shaping.

Next I attack the headstock area with the router to get the face offset depth roughed in.
In this case I am going slightly deeper than normal to accommodate a 4mm thick face plate ( Black Walnut)

You will see that I have not routed the whole area, this is to leave some footing for the router!

Then it is time to cut the neck profile from the blank.
I prefer to use a jigsaw for no other reason than I like Jigsaws!

Once the neck is liberated from the blank it is time to glue the Headstock veneer on.

Next, lunch and a cold beer (A really tasty Steamrail, courtesy of our good Mate Wokka- Cheers Buddy!)

Until next time :)

Oy Phil . . .

This project is truly astounding.
To see what you are capable of producing from scratch is really inspiring.

P.S. I've duly noted the dire warnings about routers - always been wary, but will henceforth be even more circumspect & never go without the safety specs.

Here's a pic of my "modded" router - a sorta lame (and vaguely) musical play on words.

Now for the fun bit.... getting a nice straight edge on the neck.

To do this I attach my trusty template and rout, at this stage I only take 10mm off as I need a surface to use as a guide for for the fingerboard placement.

To hold the template in situ, I use 6 short screws, countersunk so the router runs smoothly.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/n0eac-IMG_1746.JPG

Now that this is done it is time to attach the fingerboard.
I cut the ends off three of the screws and screw them pointy end up into the holes from the template attachment.
Next I locate the fingerboard and clamp it down so the points dig in. This gives me locating pins to make it easier to locate the fingerboard when I glue it down.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/7478f-IMG_1749.JPG

Before I spread the glue I place a strip of tape over the truss rod. This prevents glue squeezing down and fouling it up.
Normally I use masking tape and remove it before I place the board but this time I have used a trick I got from Gav, good old Sellotape which is thin enough to leave in place.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/2lm3j-IMG_1751.JPG

dingobass
18-06-2013, 10:37 AM
Now I can place the fingerboard and clamp it tight.
Lunch time!
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/1c699-IMG_1752.JPG

After the glue has set sufficiently- 1 hour for Titebond- off with the clamps, shape the headstock and drill the tuner holes.
For this job I am using my new toy from Stewmac, a tuner hole jig.
Man does this make it easier! 10 minutes and the holes are done.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20q56-IMG_1753.JPG

Now the neck is roughed in, I use the ledge mentioned earlier as a guide to rout the fingerboard flush to the neck.
Usually I would cut the fingerboard separately but as I am using a pre-radiused and slotted fingerboard it is more accurate to go this way as it needs to be accurately square to the neck.

It's like watching a child being born and taking their first breath! For me it was a spiritual experience and the ultimate satisfaction. The other day I took my first ever build to my mate's Music shop where a gent in his 60's asked to play the guitar. Man! Could he play dem blues! All the staff and I watched in awe as he got the full tonal qualities of the guitar which everyone had already agreed sounded good. Now it just sounded sensational!

The best part was that the Blue's player was stunned that this wasn't my full time occupation! A marked contrasts from my woodwork teachers opinion of my abilities! Which goes to show you don't necessarily need a high level of skill to do this work, but you do need a great ear and great feel!

I don't know what guitar building course DB may have done, but my course cost me $3,500 which included the acoustic kit but not the strings or tuners. They were extra. Then I had two weeks worth of accommodation, airfares and transport to and from the airport which was about $2,400. The tuners and strings were about an extra $180. Overall it cost me $6,080 to attend the course and leave with my acoustic Guitar. I think most electric course seem to be around $2,750 but not sure what you get with that.....maybe someone else has experience with building an electric on a building course?

Happily filing away at the end of the fingerboard when SNAPPO, off flies a chunk of Ebony.... fffffffff@rk!

Alrighty then, what do I do to solve this one?
Easy. Break out the masking tape and Black medium viscosity super glue.

First step is to mask the job, I don't want black goo to ooze out all over the place.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/d47wx-IMG_1763.JPG

Then I apply a thin layer of glue, trying to keep it in from the edge a little as the glue will squeeze out and fill this area.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/goprd-IMG_1764.JPG

Place the missing chunk, hold it in place with masking tape and go have another coffee.

Half an hour later, off with the tape, a quick buff with steel wool and what missing chunk was that?

Finger board levelling is the next step.
I get out my saddles for the Katana levelling tool and use these with my straight edge to get the neck set as level as possible.

When I have it close to dead flat I mark the finger board and do the last few passes to make sure it is infact flat.

Time for dots.
I am using 5mm Gold Mother of Pearl dots.
First I set out the positions on the fingerboard.
You will see that I am using a Brad point drill bit as this type of bit drills a flat bottomed hole.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/9nqm5-IMG_1801.JPG

Off to the drill press and carefully drill each hole no more than 4mm deep.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/t71ue-IMG_1802.JPG

Now the holes are drilled ready for the dots to be glued and pressed in.

Now I progress onto the fretting...

The fret wire comes in 12" lengths, so I will need to cut and pre radius it for installation.

To radius the wire I use my fret wire pliers to grip it. These guys have a slot in one jaw for the tang of the wire to sit in.
It is a simple job to gently bend the wire, moving the pliers along an inch at a time and gently bending the wire towards the tang.

End result is pre radiused wire! It is best to pre bend the wire in a slightly tighter radius than the fret board. This makes it easier to press home correctly.

Before pressing the frets, I install the side dots.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/2b586-IMG_1804.JPG

With the 16" radius fret pressing caul mounted in my drill press, I firmly press each fret home.
It is important to support the underside the neck, this saves a butt load of swearing caused by snapping the neck :)
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/w30t4-IMG_1805.JPG

Then I trim and file the fret ends and next file the 30 degree angle on the ends with my supa special toy.

Lots of sanding today.... all the way to 400 grit..

Anyhoo, to break it up a little I did the headstock inlay.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/28dgm-IMG_1837.JPG

You will notice a few things..
A slight gap around the edge of the inlay, this is deliberate as I want to highlight the out line with gold highlights.

Some tear out around the tuner holes... bugga... as it turns out, no biggie as the tuner bushings will cover this.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/f6771-IMG_1839.JPG

Note to self.. Don't forget to clamp a scrap piece of timber to the face plate when drilling holes...

Trial bolt up of neck and pup placements...

I do quite like the EMG HZ for Bass, they have a nice rounded sound suitable for most styles of music.
This build is quite experimental and I am using the EMG to see if it will give this beastie a bit more bottom end grunt and growl 8-)

Hang on, isnt that TOM a tailpiece??? This will be interesting to find out how DB's getting this secure!

dingobass
27-06-2013, 07:30 AM
Alrighty, first to answer Bassguys question.
The theory is that because the Full Contact Hardware Tune O Matic sits flush on the body, and string height is adjusted using a cam system all string energy is transferred directly onto the body ( not through skinny little screws) and therefore should improve sustain etc. Basically a string through effect without the strings going through the body.

Now for Pest's question.
See the packet on the bench behind the Jagitone?
That packet contains the posts and studs for the bridge and tail piece.

Check out the Babicz interweb page www.fullcontacthardware.com

An interesting piece of trivia that Bassguy will appreciate is Jeff Babicz was working with Ned Steinberger in the early days of Stienberger Bass production. :)

Hey Pablo, The tuners are whacky... that was one of the things that attracted me to them. That and the fact they are designed by Ned Stienberger 8-)

The FCH bridges have astounding sustain as they sit directly onto the body and the saddles are an adjustable cam so there are no skinny little pegs to stifle string vibration transfer to the body.

They range in price from $118- $138 for the TOM bridge and tailpiece.

Check them out here www.fullcontacthardware.com
