Something a bit different, I thought it might be fun to start an ugly guitar thread. Everyone has their own taste otherwise we'd all be playing strats (ugh). What guitar makes you want to barf?

For me, the first one to come to mind is the Gibson Firebird X.
http://assets.coolhunting.com/coolhunting/mt_asset_cache/2011/12/12/Gibson-X-full-body.jpg

Thank god it wasn't around for long, but WTF were they thinking when this monstrosity went into production? Beyond fugly.

The Ovation Breadwinner.

For my sins, I sold one of these to an old age pensioner for $1,500. Yes, I am going to hell

Think I've found a winner - a Tele that's so bad Adam wouldn't even want it... Unless he had quick access to a bandsaw...

I think down, down - is the right term for it...

Scary thing is they've done something like a tele bass with what looks like a humbucker / p90 (image is a bit grainy), - now I know why I don't watch commercial TV...

El thats impressive build for a kid, looks like they even strung it up with heavy to light gauge strings correctly. Not sure how much sound you would get out of it with a pickup cover and cardboard box amp ? Got to love the 2 screw 'bolt on' neck !
Will have to check with DB whether kids have to go to the naughty room for using solid paints !

My cousin & I used to make "guitars" like that. I long piece of wood for the neck, body and headstock cut from a cardboard box (later upgraded to masonite). Then we would mime to whatever music was our favourite of the time. I also made cardboard microphones out of toilet rolls and old pairs of my mum's pantyhose.

While this "log" guitar is a bit slightly. It's one of the most important guitars in history. Les Paul literally cut one of his archtop guitars in half and replaced the center with a log so he could mount the pickups to and reduce feedback. Or something like that.
Anyway, that is pretty much the first concept build of what latter became the legend that is the Gibson Les Paul.

I have to agree though, Gibson have come up with some real shockers.

A Ruling? 8O ... yep, ok, - Ruled: it's UGLY! :D

... and not just plain ugly, or even damn ugly - its BUTT-UGLY!

(not that its my intention to offend to anyone personally, but sometimes the truth does hurt! - this one's got win "Ugly Guitar Post of the Month"!)

An exercise in stupidity (36 frets? - "phhtt"!) ... I hope Gibson sued his arse if only for the crimes of seriously wasting decent timber, bastardising an otherwise beautiful guitar shape and the general blatant travesty against aesthetics and good taste!

Bass Guy
20-02-2014, 05:31 AM
I vote to veto the inclusion of the 30-fret Ibanez, on the grounds of its electronic engineering alone. Despite appearances it has a five way pickup selector as there is a "phantom" neck pickup circuit to give a front pickup sound. It's quite a marvel and deceptively easy to play in the upper register.

Seriously contemplated buying this guitar.

Haha Geoff, many, many, moons ago the first band I ever joined was as a bass player in a Jazz Quartet. I replaced a guitarist who had one bass string on his otherwise standard guitar. He played bass and guitar (not very well, if I recall correctly) but I never appreciated his skills until many years later. I didn't even know what "comping" was in those days. Knowing what I know (or more correctly, don't know) now, I wish I had half the talent that he had.

cheers

nice story Robin, so how did this guy play a 1 bass string/5 guitar string axe, does he play the bass notes with his thumb and play some guitar notes/chords with his other fingers ? I think this would be a real challenge !

robin
17-04-2014, 08:08 AM
Don't forget it was many years ago Warren, and as I was replacing him, I didn't get to see him play that much, but pretty much thumb/bass and fingers/guitar. He couldn't comp properly with only an E bass string (really also need an A bass string for flowing chord inversions). So his chords were fairly sparse, but the piano player did most of the rhythm/chords allowing him to add colour and flourishes while laying down a pretty basic bass line.

Cheers

I counted 15 strings on that axe, would be very impractical to play unless you have the worlds longest fingers. Maybe easier to play on the lap with a slide bar haha. I'd hate to know the gauge of that top heavy string
