Hi guys, on the 2nd of June at Albert Park Lake, there is a fun run in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. It is to raise funds for research into Multiple Sclerosis, commonly known as MS. MS is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, and can, to varying degrees, interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses throughout the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Since identification, MS has been the subject of intense, world-wide research but still its cause and cure remain elusive. MS is common in over 23,000 Australians and is 3 times more likely to be found in women than men.

A simple explanation is conveyed by the term itself. Sclerosis is a Greek word meaning "hardened tissue or scars" and multiple means many. Recurring episodes of MS can cause many scars to appear in the central nervous system as a result of the breakdown of the myelin, the insulating material that covers the nerve fibres. This can result in impairment of motor, sensory and cognitive functions to a greater or lesser extent.

I am participating in this because my mother has MS, and sometimes it can be very hard for her to walk.
Below is my fundraising page, where you can donate to this cause, none of this money goes to me or my family, it all goes straight to MS Australia, where it is used for research into MS. If any of you guys are available, you can see me there a bit before 9am on the 2nd of June, the run starts a 9, and I am runner 653. It would mean a lot if any of you guys donate ANY amount of money!

Let's hope it isn't cold on the day, I don't like running in the cold :(

ty guys for the donations!!!! Yer wok, let's hope for something mid-range, i prefer about 23-27 degrees for running, and I like slight cloud cover!

DB: "Run Pest Run! :) " HAHA, damn, that made me laugh!!!

wokkaboy
17-05-2013, 05:45 AM
gee whats the odds of 23-27 degrees in Melbourne in June ? thats too warm to run in anyway, ideal is mid to high teens !
Anyway you better do some training, its only 2 weeks Sunday. Have you run 5km in the last few months ?

keloooe
17-05-2013, 06:18 AM
Nah, i actually like the mid twenties!!!! Lowest temp where I would be comfortable is about 17 degrees, and no, I haven't run 5km lately, I did 3km last thursday, and I'm doing another 3km next thursday (both for cross country!)

wokkaboy
17-05-2013, 06:25 AM
ok well done 3km cross country is good training. You got a decent pair of running shoes ? (these are as important as good pups for a good sounding axe !)

for a young fella like you I'd expect a time of about 26 mins or less for 5km, providing there aren't too many slow runners in front of you !

keloooe
17-05-2013, 06:39 AM
haha yer, my shoes are pretty good for me, I average about 1km/5mins so about 25-30 mins is what i am going for, i did cross country last week in 16 mins 42 seconds, so I'm shaping up to be pretty good time-wise!
BTW, my dad is doing it as well, he is gunna be slow as, I'm probably going to beat him by about 4.5km :P

wokkaboy
17-05-2013, 06:45 AM
yer ok well done, sounds like you will prepared enough for the run. You better tell your dad you will see him at the finish line ! so is your Dad below 50yo ? he's the one that needs to train !

keloooe
17-05-2013, 07:03 AM
yer, he needs to train like mad (he's only 36 :D ) I'm up against a family friend, who is an AMAZING swimmer and runner, he does 50 laps of a pool almost everyday, no way I can get past him!!!!!

wokkaboy
17-05-2013, 07:25 AM
ur joking ur old man is 36. Crikey thats like a very senior AFL players age he should be fit. You have been mowing the lawns too long for him !
He's probably below average age of the forum !

don't worry about beating your family friend, just run your own race at your pace

keloooe
17-05-2013, 07:32 AM
My pace is about 12km/h, which is actually pretty good, my stamina is good because of all the swimming ive done throughout my life, it all comes down to the temperature!!!!
Would be awesome of one or two forum members could make it down!!!

wokkaboy
17-05-2013, 07:47 AM
yes 12km/h pace is pretty good, about my pace. There about at least 4 or so forum members near Melbourne so with any luck you will get some support. Bit far for Perthites to come !

Hey Pest, me thinks you got it wrong, but you might have been thrown by the pocket money story....

Here's a hint into Lucinda who generously gave up her pocket money and who would love to accompany you on the 5km walk......

Hey guys, I did the run this morning!!!
I jogged the whole thing, and I even took the cups of water as I ran :P

I did it in 0:26:11 (hour, minutes, seconds), but I also got a time of 0:31:14?!?!?!
The reason behind my 4 minute difference is because there were over 2800 people, and its hard to fit that many people in a gap that is only 5 meters wide!!! There are sensors at the start and finish, these record data from a small timing chip that is on the back of everyone's bib, the +4 minutes is the time it took to get everyone through the starting gate, my dad and I were near the back at the start, I passed around 1000 people throughout the race, my dad finished 10 minutes after me!

A massive thank you to everyone who donated, I raised $310 and the run was fun!!!

AJ
