Hey folks, just a reminder to get your entries in for June Guitar of the Month by 31 May 2013.

We are very pleased to announce that we have none other than Phil Manning (Chain) judging this one. Phil loves the site and the concept of building your own kit guitar. He's even organising a kit for his grandson.

For anyone unfamiliar with Phil's work, please check out www.philmanning.com.au. Personally, Phil is one of my idols, I grew up with Toward the Blues on constant rotation on my turntable.

Remember, we need at least 4 shots of your finished guitar:

Full guitar shot from the front
close up on the body (get right in there)
close up of the headstock
a shot of the back of the guitar

You can post your photos here in this thread, or email them to me at adam@pitbullguitars.com.

Good luck!

I might be a bit ambitious, but here goes.
Had a mishap, so I saved what wood tone I had left and modified a mahogany stain that I had already, not exactly the color I was after, but close, finished it in clear. been a bit of an enjoyable learning curve :P

Really beautiful guitar AJ, you should be really happy with that.

Do you know anyone with a good Digital SLR Camera? I'd love to see some pro-quality shots of the guitar with some proper lighting (no offense on your photos, but they look a bit our of focus).

I just cant seem to drive the camera I have.. or maybe I need to get a tripod ? or some one who knows how to use the dam thing..lol

adam

A tripod is always a good investment; just tell the finance minister that it's solely for family portraits (so you can be in them).

If not, just set up the camera on something solid, then set the shutter for a 2 second delay. That way you don't need to hold the camera when the shot is taken.

Damn, AJ! That's an exceptionally pretty guitar. Well done. :D

Brendan
14-05-2013, 10:36 PM
AJ could also be light - if you can get somewhere brighter, the camera will increase its shutter speed and reduce blur. A great place to take photos of people is outside in dappled light (in the shade). I think the thread on taking photos recommends a bright room without direct light. Really if you pick a room with lots of sunlight, but keep anything in the sun out of the photo, you should be right. Alternatively, you should be able to pick up a small tripod cheaply - apparently for $1 on eBay..

Looks like the close up of the back was taken outside and is nice and sharp. Just got to be careful of the sun - a guitar as nice and glossy as yours will reflect light like a mirror :o .

It's been a real pain trying to get that impressive shot for an amitture like me. I sent a pm email to Adam just now with some more tentative shots to see if they might be more worthy to put up as my entry.

Wot Brendan said!

One of the things I learned at Art School was the best time to take photos is the afternoon, when the sun is not as intense.
Lightly cloudy days are good too, as the light is clear.

Looks great AJ.

I'll throw my RC1 into the mix but I'm not in a position to add photos of it from here as we're on holidays and I don't have shots available on the ipad so hopefully the shots in my build diary will suffice.

Great to see Phil Manning involved. My wife and I have seen him on several occasions with Geoff Achison and also solo gigs around the traps in Victoria. Weve also got a couple of his cds bought at the gigs. Favourite spot being the St Andrews pub on a Sunday afternoon motorbike ride throu the hills.

Anyway I digress. Look forward to seeing the June guitars and ordering my next kit when we get home.

From Ray:

Not sure if I am doing this right, I tend to get a bit lost in these forums. Anyway...

Here's my first go at one of these kits. It's a 72 Thinline Deluxe/Jap Super Deluxe mash-up.

Quite fast and "twangy". In addition to the cosmetic mods (and through-body stringing) I also split the humbuckers with a 3-pos toggle. Pretty good result.

Cheers.

26-05-2013, 01:39 AM
yes the pick guard has black screws and was made the same shape as the guitar (3 templets later) LOL,, its in high gloss 3 ply to match the paint ,, and yes a lot of paint and curing time thats half the reason why it took so long ,, the shaping was inspired from a battle axe i was going to carve the flames on the end in to the wood for a more 3d effect but very time consuming to do thats why i just left them shaped plain ,, i just finish selling it to a collector for $470 ,, cost of build was about $250 and a lot of time , looking for next project build ,,

June really is busting out already . . .
Three great looking contenders so far.

AJ's lavish LP looks like a beautiful big black cherry toffee apple good enough to eat and oughta play pretty slick too. Is that glassy clear finish urethane?

Ray's Tele TD has a wonderful older era look with that understated (Wudtone?) stain which enhances the grain very nicely. The aged neck/board compliments it ideally too IMO.

MB69's Radical SG is especially inspiring as I am personally keen on mods. Don't know how he could part with it though. What type of clear did you use for all those finishing coats?

Can't wait to see more great work . . .

I used Style wood 95% (Made by wattyl paints, is really the new nicro that doesn't yellow with age and is recommended for instruments - grand pianos etc) http://www.wattylindustrial.com.au/documents/industrial/Stylwood%20Brochure%20LR%20May10.pdf

26-05-2013, 10:38 AM
i used car paint from auto one ,, there own brand in a can (acrylic) ,, lots of sanding down between coats 1000 grit an clear to 2500 grit , then buffed 3 stages hard med to fine then used meguiars scratch x 2 on final buff,, AND ALSO I MADE TEMPLETS of the shape and pickguard i have plans to make more but with custom art from tattooist with air gun .

i allso have a strat i converted to fretless and reshaped that i made but i will post that later

Wow. That is one super cool SG. Can't believe you parted with it for under $500. With the amount of hours you put in to it and the ridiculously good finish I would have been thinking that it would be worth double that.

Cheers AJ. The finish on this one seems quite plain, compared to your LP.

If you are planning on doing a Deluxe then you might like to ask Adam about supplying a neck with a larger headstock blank. The only thing I wish this Tele had is a proper CBS sized headstock.

Cheers Max,

I didn't think the aging detail came out in the pic (well spotted). There is age-wear on a few of the edges, but the new hardware and pristine scratchplate let it down - but they will age reasonably quickly.

The stain is actually a Cabots oil base, tinted their "Black" recipe (using Dulux tint). The neck uses a self-leveling Cedar/Cypress by Intergrain.

However I'm looking forward to trying some Wudtone, it looks like a great product.

Flying 'V'
Carmine Gypsy with Gloss and Vintage Amber Neck
Removed plastic Nut and inserted BRASS!
Changed perfectly good Pickups supplied with 4 conductor wire version as the guitar features two PushPull Pots at the neck and bridge volume to acomodater the two coil splits.
Pickguard was pretty ordinary so I remodelled it as seen!
Headstock complete with logo and truss rod cover purposefully left off!

IB-1 in Hot Auburn with Gloss, Neck in Vintage Amber
Features Coil split on both Humbuckers and the Single Coil was hand wound by me.
Upgraded the black Floyd Rosd to a genuine immitation gold Floyd Rose! Wanted the bling on this guitar!
Added two mini switches so that I could manually control the coil splits of both humbuckers as well as to be able to control both humbuckers with the second switch.

LP-1
Black Magic Woman burst with some StewMac Black for the borders. Clear Neck.
Started off as a minor catastophe! Redid the binding and started the sanding and painting from scratch. All those tricks about removing glue originated fromthis guitar. The neck was a shocker and Adam kindly arranged a new neck for me. The end result is this black beauty! Coil splits on both neck and bridge activated by PushPull pots. I eventually bought 4 conductor wire pickups after mutilating the pickups I had intended putting into this guitar!

Thanks Brett for the comment on the LP.
Dvous, the neck comes standard on the IB-1 with the dragon inlay! It was the initial reason I was attracted to the guitar, but now that its built it is just the complete guitar. The switches were the only physical mod to the guitar other than swopping out parts!

I have 3 strats to enter and won't finish till Friday the last day. 2 of them being the charity guitars we will auction for Make a Wish foundation. I'm not sure whether they are worth entering, the standard of entries look like expensive guitars from the showroom

He does play acoustic in solo sets and mixes it up with a few different guitars, including a a 6 string not much bigger than a ukulele. I'm listening to his "Migrants dance" cd as I type. I can almost taste the Parma and Pot at St Andrews pub as it plays. Might have to take a run out that way again soon!

Brendan, if the Rick inspires you to take up playing, that's great. 3 chords will get you started and you'll never look back. We can't all be guitar gods, but its a great stress reliever at the end of the day regardless of how good you might be.

Hi fellas,
thanks for the positive comments, here's some better photos of the front of the 3 strat entries

The water droplet effect is an effect Wayne saw on youtube and executed it well.

And DB the bubbles haven't burst yet but depends how aggressive the player is !

good luck to all GOTM June contenders, the standards keep rising

And also good luck Pest with the 5km run Sunday !

I've been flat out last 3 nights assembled 3 strats, a rough pic attached.

Very nice Wokka. Three distinctly different "Strats", each with its own character.

And I Love it that 2 of them are going to help sick kids, that makes them very special.

Well done mate.

A surprise late entry from my 4D partner Wayne entered his telecaster in hot auburn/carmine gypsy, we have already padlocked this with a 20mm diameter steel cable in case Adam is looking for a wall hanger ! haha
He's been working on this axe for months and done bits at a time. Too many other projects at 4D

good luck all contenders !

Love it. Well done Wayne :)

Your choice of colour is perfect and the application is spot on.

The only thing I don't like is the pick guard, but as you would know I am not a fan of them.
Anyways, It is a personal thing and I respect other folks who like em :)

Very clean, this finish is a great match for the pencil-tip inlay-ed neck - really nice.

With all these great Tele's being built, I heard Adam was putting in an order for some of these:

Ok, I think I've got all the entries for June GOTM. Phil's going to be happy when he gets 15 Guitars to choose from...

And the winner is...

Phil Manning was overwhelmed with the quality of the entries. When I contacted him in early May, I said he might need to look at 6 or 7 guitars and say a few words about each. He eventually got 14 guitars to consider, with 3 or 4 shots of each. As he says, "this has been a bit of a task". (He has been on tour all last week, so he's gone to great effort to judge our comp).

Anyway, he's looked carefully at every guitar and, according to my minimal instructions, he's looked at the choice of colour, the application of the finish, the fitting of the hardware and the overall "WOW Factor" of the finished guitar. I also asked him to think about which guitar he would he make a beeline for if he saw it in a guitar shop. Let's face it, that's what first draws us all to a particular guitar.

Ok, so his comments are:

"Gav's IB-1 is a stunner, but over the top pickup-wise for me and Gav's FV-1 is beautiful, but lacking what would have won it for me - a cover plate for the neck adjustment recess. The same goes for AJ's LP-1 which is also a stunner but lacking that tiny finishing cover plate."

"I know this will probably seem illogical to most contestants but the one I liked the most is Gordon's ST-1 in Saffron. Absolutely plain and traditional I know (but) I am a Strat player, so I may be a bit biased in that way. I just love the simplicity and the finish is lovely.

As I said, I'd have gone for Gav's FV-1 but for no (truss rod) cover plate.

I'd certainly be attracted to the Strat if I walked into a store but Gav's FV-1 certainly has the 'wow' factor."

Congratulations Gordon, this was a really tight competition and you've scored with a really subtle, tastefully finished ST-1. Well done mate!

Gav, Phil actually singled out two of your guitars, so I think you can rightly feel pretty chuffed with your entries. What were you thinking with the truss rod cover?? You would have won this one if you'd just screwed it on. I didn't even notice at first, but since Phil mentioned it, yeah, there's something missing there.

Thanks everyone for taking this comp in the spirit it's delivered. We could ask 14 different judges and they'd probably pick 14 different winners.

Ok, time for July GOTM...

Congratulations to all, especially Gordon - big month with some cracking guitars! Glad I didn't have to choose between them all...

Well done Gordon, that is a lovely lookin guitar, a well deserved winner.

Congrats to all contestants, all the guitars were winners in my opinion. With the standard of builds being so high I would hate to be a judge in the coming months.

Congrats Gordon and nice one AJ! I'm glad it wasn't me trying to choose one, that's a hard job well-done by Phil.

Even taking into account that he would probably choose a Strat it was still no mean feat.

Stupid truss rod cover!!! Haha, if you revisit my comments when I entered the FV I raised the point of purposefully not fixing the truss rod cover. I am investigating getting special truss rod covers made for all my guitars and didn't want to weaken the wood at the headstock by drilling the kit one and then finding my special one didn't fit in the drilled holes! I should have stuck it on with double sided tape! :) :) :)

I still pity Phil Manning the Herculean task he undertook. Big thanks, Mr M.

Yer well done Gordon. First time I saw your guitar was lastnight and Phil singled it out. Well done all other entries the standard has risen so quickly last few months. Back to the workshop for my July entry which will probably be a 4 string!

Another congrats from me.

It is quite possible that I'm going mad, or the red wine has upset my vision, I can't find Gordon or the Saffron Strat here unless I'm mistaken (and I freely admit this does occasionally happen!). If its not I look forward to seeing it. 8-)

Cheers
