Hey!! I have searched everywhere, to no avail,... so I thought as a last resort I might ask here and see if anyone could point me in the right direction -

I am after a (blank preferably) black and white checkered pickguard sheet, I found one place in America that have the material, but they only sell it in massive sheets, considering I only want about 20CM x 20CM, that doesn't seem like a viable option!

Any help would be much appreciated! thanks in advance!!

eBay is always your best friend if you can't find anything good...

What the ? I searched eBay!!! All I could find were a couple that had a checkered look, but were sort of distorted, like checkered patterns on an angle - not what I am after.

I did not see that strat one though, I spose I should look harder maybe, hopefully someone has them in blanks!!!

Have you considered making one yourself? You could use edging tape to mask the one you have already and paint it (what have you got to lose?) or, if it were me, I would use vinyl (the sticky stuff not the record stuff). You could probably go to a sign shop and ask them to sell you a strip for $5/$10, cut a bunch of squares and carefully lay them on in the pattern you want.

I like the "thinking outside the box" on this one. A scratch plate's job is what it says; to protect the body from plectrum scratches. You could make it out of anything you like really; wood, vinyl, leather?? And once you settle on a material you can paint it whatever colour/design you want.

Ok, the first to put a black leather scratch plate on their kit gets an official "Pit Bull Guitars Nod of Approval".

On second thoughts, I just did a Google image search for leather scratch plates and... well... just don't do it.

I've seen leather used before, I prefer plastic or wood, wood looks cool!

Good idea Pablo, I am thinking if I can't find the material I want (I have sent a stack of emails out asking some different companies if they can supply it) then I could always buy some checkerboard contact adhesive and apply that to a pickguard....

Oh, and not really The Specials or Cheap Trick, more so a SKA look!!

Leather ? not sure I like the idea, or the look (I did google it Adam, looks pretty ordinary) I suppose if you were going for a crocodile dundee theme it could work!!

Cheers!!!

You could perhaps try a clear pickguard (buy or make (http://www.guitaraust.com.au/body/pickguards/pickguard-blanks/pickguard-blanks-electric.html)), and then add your checkered pattern to the back of it, using paint or contact or whatever. That way your checkerboard would be protected from scratching/chipping/wear and it would perhaps add some depth to the effect... just a thought. Or, maybe you could try using some black automotive style vinyl spray paint (used on plastics and car interiors) on a white pickguard?

The Specials were a London-based second wave Ska band - that's why he asked that... The Specials, The Beat, Selector, Specials AKA and so on...

Leather could certainly be an interesting idea. I have often wondered if you could Tatoo Leather, If so it would present some interesting scenarios....

So I googled it and, yes you can. Maybe not for pickguards, but some interesting Strap ideas come to mind......

I've tried a few dye cut vinyl's lately over my stock guards as I couldn't find an affordable custom pickguard. They seem to hold well and saved me from cutting a whole new guard from PVC sheets.

they look unreal Cade, can you please explain the process again how you achieved this ? cheers

Thanks Wokka,
The process itself is pretty simple (the blue guards/covers took me about 10mins to do all 3) after a bit of practice attempt on the the orange. The hard part was finding decent sized vinyl sticky sheets that weren't solid color only.
I finally found a few sheets as part of a set from a guy on ebay, who specialises in vinyl laptop covers.
It was just a matter of stenciling out the pvc shapes onto the Vinyl sheets and then applying it the same way as an auto decal. Lightly wet the pickguard with a misted on solution of water/detergent and lay it facedown on the sticky vinyl. This allows you to reposition a bit and remove bubbles before the Vinyl sticks firmly. Then once it had dried and adhered thoroughly I used a box-cutter knife to remove excess any vinyl that was overlapping the PVC.
And presto, left with unique and durable art thats pretty scratch resistant. I used the same stuff on my jeep bonnet and thats endured 2 years of sun, storms and anything else with little to no color fade of wear and tear

cheers Cade, so what search on ebay do I look for 'adhesive vinyl paper/sheets' ? Then print your image on a standard laser or bubble jet printer ?
If you could please post a link of the vinyl sheet that would be great thanks

Yep I just searched for adhesive vinyl sheet and found this bloke http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/taylormadeskins*
It was between $12 - $15 Australian for 2 small sheets that came from the U.K in about a fortnight. The artwork is pre-printed onto the vinyl, I'm not sure on the process about printing your own sorry. This was the best I could find so if you come across another one in Australia let me know!

Looks like you certainly can print onto vinyl using an inkjet printer and inkjet laminate at home Wokka.
