This was my first ever guitar build and I probably push my skill level a bit. I feel I made a lot of mistakes and rushed bits and pieces mostly because I'm not to most time rich person in the world and because I had to do most of it outside on my deck so I never really had a nice safe place to leave it between coats of paint etc.

Having said all that everyone who has seen it says they're impressed, so it can't be that bad.

The most important thing is that I am very happy with it. All the electronics are behaving nicely and I managed to chase away most of the string rattles. I just letting the whole thing settle now before I go into tweaking it much more.

Now I'm finding that not playing in 15 years is a big of a reality check...the rock star in my head is not the pudgy 40 something twanging away in my living room. 8O

All I can say it thanks for making these kits. It was fun, I learned more about guitars in the last month than I had learned in the last 25 years. Every musician should have a go at crafting their instrument.

The pots were a bit of a trick.

Ok so I did the cardboard trick where I laid everything out and poked it through cardboard...the first mistake I made was being a little stingy with the wire between things. You need to give everything an extra inch to give you some play when fiddling around inside the hollow body.

Anyway I started with the 3 way switch and was able to push it into place with my finger. The same with the 2 volume pots near it once I got them through the holes I held them with pliers and that was pretty easy. The tone pots were a whole world of misery. I got some cotton thread and made a slip knot and tried hooking them inside the body...this was a stupid idea. the thing to do is to get your thread with the slip knot and poke it through the hole and out through the F hole where you loop it onto your pot then drag it through the body...pots installed in seconds.

The outlet I did the same except I looped the string through the outlet over the bit that secured the jack...came through easy

The strap is off of one a guitar hero controller...I'm thinking i need a leopard skin strap to finish it properly

Haha, I used to use a GH strap, then bought a really comfortable leather strap!

Ha! Yeah, I'm getting a bit of a Brian Setzer vibe already (he actually has a Gretsch with a leopard skin finish top! see here: http://youtu.be/xHtbrk1TcZ4 8O )

I've had bit of time to play it and the action is spot on...it is really settling down nicely.

Second that 8O

Your sunburst work looks brilliant - did you use airbrush or another technique?
I'm sorta toying with the idea of a spalted wood axe(sad pun)treated with Wudtone "Black Magic Woman" probably with silver accents and maybe some sort of "burst" down the road . . .

Inspiring . . .

Wow, just wow....

Great job! I am impressed that you were able to use the string method and retain your sanity :D

I will be needing psychotherapy for the next ten years after my ES build...... I still get twitches and break out in a cold sweat every time I see an ES 8O
