So after receiving my kit in late January, I decided that I would use Wudtone to colour my build. I had actually done a fair bit of research and had decided on Wudtone before Pitbull became the distributor, so I was delighted to hear that I could source the kits locally rather than trying to convert dollars in to pounds :)
So after the delay on the first Pitbull shipment, and dramas with Australia Post (that DB was extremely helpful with, I might add) I recieved my Wudtone kit and started the exciting bit of my build, the colouring!
I decided to go with a burst kit after seeing the wud2tone strat on the Wudtone site, in dark onyx with a hot auburn burst.
I had previously shaped my headstock, which most of you will have seen in the headstock forum, but I'll re post it here anyway.
The photo of the body is after two deep colour coats. It's starting to come out really nicely

Done 2 deep colour coats and two base coats. I'm tossing up between another base coat or starting on the top coat next. I'm really happy with the way this has turned out, really glad I took everyone's advice about changing the filler to timbermate too. Unless you really look for it, you would never know there was filler in a few spots.
I've also put up a pic of the stained headstock. Used a pyrography pen for the logo. I should explain about the name. The guitars for my dad Alan, and it's a Gibson replica, so I pretty much mashed the names together. Also, sine it's being built by me, Al's son, I figured it was a no brainer. Also, I'm about to be a dad so I figure I'm allowed to do cheesy dad jokes :)

Opinions are needed! With or without the pick guard? I was thinking without up till I put it on, but now I'm staring to think it looks better with it...

Awesome 'burst, love it.

As it stands I think it looks better with the pickguard, but only because the black pickup rings contrast a little too much with the chrome pups.

Have you considered chrome rings? I just did a (really) quick and dirty mockup of some chrome rings and I think they work (pics below, excuse the rush job).

Chrome rings are available at a few places, some in pairs, others singles:
StewMac (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_parts/Electric_guitar:_Covers_plates/Metal_Humbucker_Mounting_Rings_For_Flat_Bodies.htm l),
GuitarFetish (http://www.guitarfetish.com/Pair-Chromed-Brass-Pickup-Rings_p_587.html),
guitaraust (http://www.guitaraust.com.au/body/pickups/pickup-mounting/humbucker-mounting-ring-metal-chrome.html).

Toss a coin.....

Personally I have never really been a pick guard man, but this time it is a really hard choice.

Best wishes with the immanent arrival of your Bub!

I've never really been a pick guard man either DB, but for some reason in this case it just seems to add something to the setup that makes it look complete. So I've decided that it will go on.
Also, thanks to everyone for your input and well wishes! Starting to get nervous now, exactly 4 weeks until the due date!

Oh, and here's a pic I haven't posted yet, the back of the neck.

Just remember one thing: the due date is 99% incorrect... When my sister was in hospital last year, my cousin was born 6 months before the due date!

Are you sure it wasn't 6 weeks Callum? Pretty sure a 6 month prem baby wouldn't be developed enough to survive. Even 3 months early is borderline...
But yes I know that the due date isn't usually accurate, we're ready to go now at a moments notice

It's turned out so beautifully I'll be sad to let it go :(

For those wondering, all the parts on this build were stock Pit Bull, except for the switch ring and the truss rod cover, which I got from Hell Guitars in Japan.

This was my first build, and I was amazed at how easy the process was. I honestly couldn't see myself buying a new guitar now, the satisfaction I got from building this was amazing, and I'll certainly be building more in the future.

It sounds fantastic Gavin, although I'm going to have to alter the nut, (it's too high), and I'll probably get the neck set up by someone with a bit more experience to get the action as low as possible. Overall I couldn't be happier with the results though :D

And so my build comes to an end... I gave the guitar to dad this afternoon after deciding it would be best for him to get the guitar set up how he wants it rather than me setting up to my preferences.
The look on his face was priceless when I gave it to him, and now we can't get him to put it down :)
Now all that's left to do is decide which kit to do next!

HI Everyone,

My BMW kit arrived today - I am now getting myself prepared to get into it. Can anyone give me a tip on holding an ES 335 in the vice, short of gluing or screwing a piece of scrap into the neck recess.

Hi Stui, personally I like the pick guard on your masterpiece - beautiful job with the colour burst and the head.

Cheers,

Pete (aka Pedro)
