Slightly different design from the previous one I built. But this is the pick-up winder I am building for our good friend Dingobass!

Here is the recipe for this one.

First throw in some Parts....

Building the box and cutting the pickup winder holder to shape. This is the 'empty side' of the winder. Simply seen here, gluing a support for the 'lid' of the winder.

http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/9606c-Photo5.jpg

Below is the busy side of the winder after being glued. As you can see I have already drilled the cavity and cut the support which will house the 800 RPM motor. Still to come is the hole for the Reed Switch which will trigger the counter to count the revolutions as well as the 'feeder' that will be used to guide the wire onto the coil.
Note that part of the motor housing is actually loose at the moment. It is not glued to the side and won't be glued. The idea is that this component will be bolted into the glued section so that the motor aan be changed if ever something goes wrong or if the component needs to be shifted or updated.

http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/44jg3-Photo4.jpg

I have used the scroll saw to cut the pickup holder shown below. It is currently too thick for my liking so I will trim it down on the sander.

Hey Gav, can you possibly link me to the PCB Motor Controller and the cream coloured box-thing????

Gavin1393
26-01-2013, 04:12 AM
Sure can!
The cream coloured box-thing is the counter. It's a JDM-11 24 volt resettable counter. Both the counter and the PCB Motor Controller and 800 RPM motor (all 24v) can be obtained from:

http://www.uxcell.com/

They have been pretty good so far!

I am quivering with anticipation right now!

Ok, spent several hours on this last night!

Using the Thicknessing Sander to bring the PUP holder to a more appropriate size and weight. Can'thave the thing flying off the axle and hitting our resident luthier in the face or worse!
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/nw8w1-Photo21.jpg
Drilling the hole in preparation to attach the wire guide to the 'busy side' of the winder! A bolt with two slides will be inserted here to allow the aforementioned luthier to guide his wiring onto the pickup as it spins completely in control at 600 RPM,10,000 times.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/w9m90-Photo20.jpg
On the subject of the motor, this is the housing with the 'clamps' in place to hold the motor in position. It is adjustable as previously mentioned.

Next onto the front panel of the winder.

The first task wasto mark roughly where the instruments and components will be placed. Second step find appropriate Laminate Router and bit and create lots of dust and wood chips.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/5w7ze-Photo17.jpg
Here I have carefully marked off the cavity for the counter and then made sure that the switch will be centered.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/318pr-Photo16.jpg
Off to the scrollsaw to cut out the cavity for the counter.

This is the 'busy side' of the winder with the exterior view of the motor. I need to measure up the position for the Reed Switch which will send a pulse to the counter and count the number of winds on the PUP.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/0ra60-Photo14.jpg
I have 'folded' the reed switch and soldered the attaching wires to transport the signalto the counter. To protect everything, the standard shrinkwrap has been added!
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/d87z6-Photo13.jpg
Reed switch in position.Itjustslides in nicely. is adjustable by hand if necessary!

Here is the PUP holder again. Nicely slimmed and now sporting a hole drilled in the centre. This is to allow movement of the holder along the motor axle for fine tuning with the guide at the other end!
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/455k7-Photo10.jpg

Four humbucker screws attach the aluminium bracket to the PUP Holder - Note to self! Need to remember to replace those screws or the humbucker ain't going to stay in the guitar too long!
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/6375p-Photo8.jpg
The side nut attaches the aluminium bracket to the axle of the motor. Again adjustable! :P

Last thing to do with the PUP holder is to drill a 10mm hole and insert/attach the rare-earth magnet....sh#t should have checked with DB's Dr's that this was in order.

I figured I should give a better account of the bending of the Reed switch in case someone thinks I mean't to bend the actual glass. Care must be taken in bending the Reed Switch because the glass covering the Reed Switch is very thin and prone to crumbling.

http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/1oyi1-Photo2.jpg

The next part in the process is to begin connecting up the components. Good place to start is with the wiring of the on/off switch.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/64ie0-Photo3.jpg

The motor controller is placed into its position and wired up to the Potentiometer.

Hereis th wiring diagram 'borrowed' from the Telecaster forum drawn up by Nosmo who is the inspiration behind my unit. Note that I used a 24v circuit whereas the drawing depicts a 12v....

http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/his04-Nosmo-Teleaster-forum.jpg

The following picture is a closeup for the finished pickup holder with the positioning of the reed switch. I figured I wouldn't bore everyone with a bunch of wires being shown soldered up.You have the wiring diagram so should be easy from there?

Final gluing up! will ask DB to post a few pics once he gets it home.

I'm enjoying this in a completely voyeuristic way. Can't see myself ever building one, but enjoying watching someone else do it. Oh, and I love my Irwin quick grips, some of the most useful tools in my shed. The only way they could be better is if they were the ones that reverse, so that they can push as well as pull (if you take my meaning).

Great to meet the Gavmeister and his family.
The Braai (South African for BBQ) was excellent, Great company and many laughs.

I hope that one day in the future we can have a get together of all the forum members.
The exchange of information and the camaraderie we have on this forum is unique, I have made some wonderful friends through it.

Anyhoo, I have got gear for making my first pups on order and I will post progress pics of my first pup winding experience soon!

Not sure if this is what you were looking for Glenn - my quickgrips can swap the end of the "grip" - one has a clip sort of affair (yellow bit on bottom) and the other a screw affair... Now if you squeeze the handle, they push apart..

Dumb Q ... in the circuit diagram , where do the wires from the reed s/w go onto the counter ? ie the white, blue and black ? and does the counter get power from the power supply?

Gavin1393
30-05-2013, 12:28 PM
Hi AJ,
Not a dumb question at all. It does depend on what counter you buy. If you buy the one I have shown here, it will need to be a 24v unit and it will be powered by the same power supply as the motor. Effectively the reed switch does not have a positive or negative side, but will be connected via the black and the white wires. The unit I show already has a reset switch built in.

AJ
30-05-2013, 12:37 PM
tk's Gavin, so I take it those wires go to terminals 1 and 2 of the jdm 11-5h.
I have received the counter and motor so far, just waiting on the cc board. That mob sent 2 x $5 vouchers for next purchases from then... cool hey. Also noted on Ebay was a 24v dc motor driver power supply also ( in a single unit)
.

Gavin1393

Sounds right to me!

keloooe
17-06-2013, 10:56 PM
Hey Gav, is there a chance you can show us close-ups of the wiring for each component on your winder???
And also, can you add in the reverse switch???

AJ
18-06-2013, 12:43 AM
kelooe, the wiring for the reverse switch is already shown in the CC in an earlier post.. it is the the DPDT switch where power is routed to one side of the switch then connected in common and (reversed polarity on the other side)through on the opposite side of the switch, where the center position is the "out to the actual motor... if that help you any?

keloooe
18-06-2013, 05:49 AM
So, where's the switch to turn it off??? I saw 2 switches in the vid that Gav posted, also Gav, how'd ya make it stop then go in reverse???

Hi Pest ! Yeah, i need to post that simple adaption!

Gavin1393

Here it is....simple DPDT switch wired up to reverse polarity and hence turn the motor into reverse!

keloooe
18-06-2013, 07:46 AM
AHHHHHHHH!!!! ok then, so im guessing the power switch isn't in the diagram yet?

Gavin1393
18-06-2013, 10:40 AM
You'd be guessing wrong! ;)

The reverse switch is in the original schematics....

I just reproduced the wiring diag for you. I wanted effectively a kill switch which is what the front switch does.
I didn't need to install it. Also, the Red 'reset' switch was unnecessary as the counter had its own built in reset switch.

keloooe
19-06-2013, 04:36 AM
ok, so can you please post the diagram for the on/off switch???

Gavin1393
19-06-2013, 10:17 PM
Yeah! Well done AJ! As far as I know you are the first to put together a winder since I posted the design and walk through. Now you just need to get some pickup wire from brocott.co.uk , the 41 & 42 AWG core is what you will be needing although you can go up to AWG 44,
Either rip apart an existing pickup or grab a few single core or humbucker kits from Stremac and you are away. Or simply jump on e-bay and grab some real cheapies from China and remove their wire and do your own. They only cost $1!
I anticipate making a video this weekend to show everyone how to make a pickup on the winder, so look out for that!

Didn't know about that Mob Gavin, now the exchange rate for the $ would approx 3 to 1 for the pound? and their delivery charges? Had found a mob called TemcCo. They are also on Ebay, the price for 42 gauge from them is $32 Aus, and $26 delivery.. the spool size is 1Lb (48841 ft or approx 17000m)
A good thing is I do have a spool of enameled wire.. I don't exactly remember how I came across it.. but it as traveled many miles with my shed stuff. Just need to measure the thickness, but do think it will be brilliant for trial purposes.

Gavin1393

Gav.

I use two Jaycar purchased disc that I can set on the winder axis. I then feed the wire by hand.

These were a bit more bulky than I wanted, but I found a pair that whilst not brass, they were aluminium and were more disk like. they work very well.

Looks like the business Gav. Any idea what that Jaycar part was called? I can see tapped metal spacers but I don't think that is it..

cheers,
Gav.

hey mrcreed, it's called a "Aluminimum Hub with Set Screws" and can be bought at Jaycar in australia. I got mine online as my local store didnt stock them. I also used two more to create a guide for the wire:

I've been considering building a PU winder for a while.... I have some of the bits, still wondering if it is all worth turning those bits into a project

Some questions for you Gavin, and DB. How do you like the speed of the motor when doing winds? I saw elsewhere that you got a 1000 RPM motor. Is it a bit quick, or a little slow? By my calculations a wind of 10k turns at 1000RPM would take at least 10 minutes. Is that typical, or similar to the Stewmac box?

What speed do you usually use? And/or how long do you usually take to wind one coil?

Hi Marcel. I wish i found this thread sooner. I'll let the others answer your questions from a pro, but from a beginner POV, there's no way i could wind at full speed, it increases your chances of snapping the wire ten fold (which is cryworthy), takes about 30 - 40 mins to wind a single coil at a medium/slow speed

Thanks Andy,

Main reason I ask is that I have what I thought was a reasonable 6mm shaft 12V motor but it max's out at 9000 RPM. So in theory when flat out it would complete the actual wind in one or two minutes, which seems now to be a very high risk motor to use. A maximum speed of 1000 RPM certainly seems to offer a much more reliable winding option. I might still use it and somehow include a max RPM limiter in the controller.

I have a 12V speed controller, a hall effect turns counter, and a hall effect RPM meter that I could include so I'm two thirds the way there. Bobbins and wire are still on the 'to get' list...

You have a lot of projects on the go there Marcel:D

And who says men can't multitask...lol

I have a big shed Andy, so it is more a case if one project hits a wall then there is always another sitting nearby ready and only waiting for more of my time...

I used my winder about a dozen times with no issues, perfect for straight forward winds.
Then I upgraded to a Schatten winder with all the bells and whistles and have used that a grand total of two times...
To be honest, whilst winding your own is fun the expense of importing decent wire, bobbins and magnets then with the time spent pfaffing around making, potting and cleaning up after it just simply isn't worth the hassle.. especially when I can get custom wound pickups made to my specs for around the $100 mark that made mine sound like Mariah Carey singing under six foot of wet concrete with a mouth full of dry Sao biscuits...... with the auto tune switched off.

That's certainly a picture there DB..... Concrete and Sao....

It all depends on what you are chasing after... Having any success in doing it is one thing, getting a consistent quality result can only come after a lot of practice with success.

And that is why I get mine made now.. I just don't have the time to put into winding, too busy doing repairs and builds :)

Here is the PUP holder again. Nicely slimmed and now sporting a hole drilled in the centre. This is to allow movement of the holder along the motor axle for fine tuning with the guide at the other end!

Four humbucker screws attach the aluminium bracket to the PUP Holder - Note to self! Need to remember to replace those screws or the humbucker ain't going to stay in the guitar too long!

The side nut attaches the aluminium bracket to the axle of the motor. Again adjustable! :P

Where can I find that aluminum bracket?
or Can you send me the link to buy it?
