Here are some pics of my Spalted Maple LP. I have used GoldenRod on the top and Mahogany on the back and sides. The first Coat of the GoldenRod and you could just tell it was going to be gorgeous. I have only done three coats so far. Might need one more...before applying the gloss.

Looking scha-weeeet!

Are you using any highlights, or is that just straight Goldenrod?

That is just straight Goldenrod! I cannot rave highly enough about it!
I did a bulk order so I do have the potential to put highlights into the grain....don't think it will need it...

Gav, I've been halfway across the continent the whole time!!! He is my mentor, so I shall be just like him. Shows how much time I have spent being here...

This is a Gibson LP copy with Jimmy Page wiring. The spalted Maple cap was painted using GoldenRod from Wudtone as was the headstock. neck, back and sides were painted Mahogany also from Wudtone.

I had ordered the Golden Age Pickups from SM, but on inspecting them realised I would have to do the coil-split myself. Ruined a damned fine pickup trying! Opted instead for some awesome DiMarzio Air's which come with easy options to coil-split.

Swopped out the plastic nut for a brass nut to give better sustain and swopped out the black bridge and saddles for silver options that I stole from another PB kit I am building.

Since I am using the Jimmy Page wiring model I took the liberty of upgrading Pots, capacitors, fitting the 150 Resistor and capacitor gizmo to maintain tone to the volume pots. Orange drop capacitors used in this baby as it was always going to be a special guitar since I built it for a guy who turned 50 this March (not you Adam)! It now sits proudly in his lounge!

It sounds sensational and I will definitely be using DiMarzio Air's again.

Yeah! But I was keen to finish the guitar and seeing as Imalready had the DiMarzio's on hand!!!! :)
Imthink SM must have had a number of calls to produce the 4 conductor wire versions!

Yeah, they would have had calls for the overwound pups... Golden Age and Dimarzio pups are the best in my books!!!

I don't mean to nitpick, because it's lovely, but have the pickup surrounds been put on backwards? It might just be the photos, but they look to me like they slope the wrong way.

Whoops... I think Pablo might have a point.... 8O
No Biggie, done that one myself a few times :D

As long as the pup is facing the right way, then it's fine!

Hi Pablo and DB

It's a good question and one that I did consider and am aware of. In fact when I took the LP round to Adam he also commented.

However, I'm not entirely sure that there is a right or wrong way. Certainly there is a standard way.

I originally installed the pickups in the standard way but felt uncomfortable with how close the pickups were to the strings, yet it worked far better if the humbuckers were reversed inside the surrounds. I think one of the pictures with the lighting makes it look way more 'out' than it really is.

I jumped on the net at the time to check it out and saw examples such as these below. The first two (same guitar)on seems to graduates from it's thinnest at the neck to the fattest at the bridge.
http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/o7011-1995-Gibson-Les-Paul-Jimmy-Page-Signature.jpg
In the third and fourth picture, the surrounds both appear to slope downwards towards the bridge, like mine.

http://pitbullguitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/8swli-GibsonLesPaul81Standard014.jpg

So I don't really know. I just fitted them in the way that seemed to keep the pickups as parralel to the strings as possible?

Appreciate any comments.

Good point about the height, I had a similar issue with my...errm... Adam's LP.
In the end I swapped them out for a set of lower profile surrounds, end of problem.. :D
