Sigh, the high E string has to be such a pain to put on guitars for me... Especially last night when I changed the strings on my lp.... Took me a total of about 20 mins just to get the thing to sit on, let alone wind it... My problem was it was 1. Hot and 2. I couldnt get a grip...

All the other strings are fine though, which annoys me even further!

Clearly you haven't watched my excellent video on stringing a TL-1. Actually, I don;t think it's that excellent, but I do show the way I've strung my guitar for the past 35 years. It works for me.

Unfortunately, it's something that's very hard to show on video, you'd really need a live demonstration. But check out the video anyway.

I string the same way that you used, with the vise-like device, but the e string is soooo slippery in the heat!!

Hey Keloooe,

get yourself a string winder. 5 or 10 bucks you will never regret spending. They make changing strings a breeze. :)

I have one of those w/ cutter, but what is wrong is that I can't get a good enough grip on that fiddly string, so when I wrap it around the top of the spindle, it slip outta my hands and off the post when I get to the 3rd coil...

Don't get me wrong here, but it sounds like your doing something drastically wrong when you're winding the string on. Maybe you're trying to wind too much on to the peg, a high e string only needs three or so wraps to be stable, less for the bigger strings. Here's my suggestion:

After slotting the string through the hole and winding 1/2 to 3/4 turn so the string kinks, try putting tension on the guitar side of the string by pulling it away from the fretboard, gently at first until you've got one full wrap. This allows you tight control as to where the string is going so you can achieve really neat wraps and there's no way for your grip to slip.

Yea, i use a similar technique and wind 3 times around the top...
